Madera Irrigation District
Mission Statement THE MISSION OF MADERA IRRIGATION DISTRICT is to obtain and manage affordable surface water and groundwater supplies in a manner which will ensure the long-term viability of irrigated agriculture in the District.

2008 Bond Refunding $1 million annual savings $13.3 million net cashflow savings
MID-Madera County Assessment Transfer Approximately 18,000 Assessments Transferred Including Standby Fees Public Outreach-Press Releases, Newsletter Articles, Public Notices
2016 Grants WaterSMART - SCADA Improvements $292,000 USBR funding 14 additional Rubicon gates and meters WaterSMART - Pipeline $581,000 USBR funding 6,500 pipeline project DWR Prop 1 Turf Removal $20,000 for materials and CCC labor

Surface Water Usage in the District Why use MID surface water Current benefits Future benefits How to order MID surface water Ordering water On demand system How to use surface water
Why Use MID Surface Water Current Benefits Availability On demand system Water quality Reduced treatment costs Reduced amendment costs Increased production rates Flushing Cost versus pumping Future Benefits Groundwater preservation
How to Order MID Surface Water 1. Crop Water Application 2. Call Office for first order 3. Call Canal Operator for future orders Changes made between 5:00am-5:00pm daily Yes, it s that simple!
How to Use MID Surface Water Surface Water Filtration Mike Blum, Western Ag & Turf Water Treatment Paul Hansen, U.S. Water Water Quality Don Wolf, Helena Chemicals Pump Optimization Matt Angell, Madera Pumps
Surface Water Filtration Mike Blum Western Ag & Turf Incorporated
Three Effective Filtration Types Sand Media Gravity Screens Disc Filtration
Sand Media
Sand Media Advantages Effective filtration of organic and nonorganic contamination Automatic back flushing Single pump needed Very common (parts availability)
Sand Media Disadvantages Flush water (200gpm/tank) Large footprint
Gravity Screens
Gravity Screen Advantages Effective filtration of organic and nonorganic contamination No flush water
Gravity Screen Disadvantages Large footprint Multiple pumps Open system Adjustment issues
Auto Disc Filters
Auto Disc Filter Advantages Effective filtration of organic and nonorganic contamination Automatic back flushing Single pump needed Less flush water than media Smaller footprint
Auto Disc Filter Disadvantages Higher cost Higher flush pressures required Not as common (repair parts inventory)
Water Treatment Paul Hansen U.S. Water
EVERY DROP MATTERS
What Effect Will Poor Distribution Uniformity have on Fertigation and Other Input Costs?
Irrigation Uniformity Poor water management can effect crop yield and quality Poor system performance can result in wasted money on fertigation and chemigation. A fouled or plugged system will waste money on energy, water, and labor
What does Poor DU Mean?
Why Do We Have Poor DU? Common Issues that Affect Water Delivery Plugged Filters Contaminated reservoirs Mineral and biological loading in source (well, district) water Plugged emitters

What Steps Can We Take? Determine Current DU (FREE) Water Quality Analysis (FREE) Deposit Sample Analysis (FREE) System Remediation / Follow Up DU Prescribe Maintenance Program Based on Water Challenges Service
System Remediation and Maintenance Gather water, tubing, and sand media samples In field DU evaluation Comprehensive system remediations for any mineral or biological build up Follow up DU evaluation to ensure improved system performance Consistent and reliable chemical treatment to maintain desired DU
Reservoir Remediation and Maintenance Reservoir spray down to neutralize existing problem Automated injection of 25% Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate Consistent control of algae bloom More effective algae control than conventional Blue Stone Ideal for harder and high ph water sources
Well Treatment and Maintenance Reduce drawdown Reduce power demand Reduce run times Reduce wear and tear Can chemically clean wells without having to remove well head or column pipe
High Iron and Iron Reducing Bacteria What problems existed before Helena/U.S. Water Grower started with over 10ppm of iron from multiple wells Grower would have to pressure wash disk filters once a week Filters would backflush every 30 minutes Growers reservoir had a constant problem with algae bloom Replaced 50,000 emitters at the start of the 2014/2015 season Helping a grower reduce cost, while improving DU Reduced incoming Iron PPM to 1.5ppm at filters. Sequestered remaining iron to the field. Growers did not have to pressure wash disk filters. 8 hour backflush interval Growers reservoir was clean and did not have algae bloom. Significant improvement in the delivery of water and nutrients to the field
