1 KENYA PORTS AUTHORITY PO Box MOMBASA KENYA Phone Fax Web: The Kenya Ports Authority was created by an Act of Parliament on January 20 th Apart from Mombasa, KPA has also under its jurisdiction the small ports of Lamu, Kiunga, Kilifi, Malindi, Funzi, Mtwapa, Shimoni and Vanga.
2 The Port of Mombasa is the coastal end of the Northern Corridor, which serves the countries of Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda and Eastern Zaire. MOMBASA as 16 deep water berths with total quay length of 3044m and a maximum dredged depth of 11m. The designed capacity of TEU per annum has already been exceeded. The terminal has 72 reefer points for refrigerated containers. The crude oil is handled at Kipevu Oil Terminal, while the refined products are handled at Shimanzi Oil Terminal.

Vacuvators at general cargo berths for handling wheat, maize and fertilizers. 1 Conveyor belt system at berth No. 9, which handles soda ash. 13 main quay transit sheds with a total area of 82,653m² 3 Back of port transit shed of 39,344 m² 1 cold storage with 6 chambers and total floor area of 1,247 m², and capacity of 4,582 tons. 2 lighterage transit sheds with area of 13,305 m². 7 back of port sheds with a total area f m² 1 Customs warehouse of m² 4 Old Port Godowns with total floor area of 295 m² Stacking grounds with total area of m² Grain Bulk Handling The Grain Bulk Handlers Ltd (GBHL), a private company, invested $35 million for grain handling facility, with the silos being located just outside the port. The grain is transferred to the silos by use of conveyor belts. The facility also handles fertilizer. The facility was officially opened in March 2000, at cost of $35 million. Berth No. 3 is used for ships handled by the Grain Bulk
4 Handlers. The facility comprises 24 silos, with annual capacity of tons of grain and fertilizer. Inland Container Depots KPA has established Inland Container Depots (ICD) in order to provide a better service to inland customers. All are linked with the Port of Mombasa by regular container rail services. The depots are located at Nairobi, Kisumu and Eldoret, and have transit sheds and stacking grounds equipped with various types of cargo handling equipment like forklifts trucks, frontloaders, tractors, trailers, reachstackers and cranes. Nairobi ICD (Embasaki) Commissioned in July 1984, the Nairobi ICD has a capacity of TEU per annum. Its fenced area is 18.7 ha. Kisumu ICD The depot has a total fenced area of 17 ha and is designed for a capacity of TEU per annum. Eldoret ICD This dry port is primarily targeting the land-locked countries of Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi. However, the facility is currently leased to Moi University, where is it used as education facility. The Port of Mombasa is connected to its hinterland through the network of the Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC): Mombasa - Malaba (Ugandan border) extending in Uganda to Kampala Nakuru - Kisumu (branch on the main line to the Lake Victoria, connecting also to Uganda through lake ferry service)

Rehabilitation involve importation of appropriate soils to re-enforce the diversion area and extensive landscaping along the road and the adjacent river valley. Development of new container berths (two) at the lighterage wharves. Conversion of conventional cargo berths number 13 and 14 into container berths. The Mombasa container terminal has already exceeded its design limit of TEU per annum. Development of free trade zone at port of Mombasa. The project will involve construction of civil, electrical and other related infrastructure works. Development of a cruise ship complex. The project involve demolition of shed number 1 and 2 as to enable develop a modern reception, conferencing, banqueting, shopping and restaurant facilities. Second bulk grain handling facility a non-silo bulk grain handling facility at the conventional berths along kilindini. Second sea port at Lamu. The project involves undertaking studies on the feasibility and viability of having a second port in Lamu area. Waste reception facilities. The project is aimed at building a waste treatment plant at Mombasa port to comply with the environmental regulations adopted by IMO. Port restructuring process.
