1 UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA AT BIRMINGHAM DEPARTMENT OF FACILITIES PLANNING FACILITIES STANDARD PURPOSE: 1. The general purpose of each Facilities Standard is to provide minimal criteria for construction materials at University facilities regarding code compliance, warranty, approved products, execution and uniformity. 2. To protect the health and safety of patients, visitors, students, faculty and staff, in addition to protecting non-project UAB property, all construction must be in accordance with: NFPA 241 safeguarding construction, alteration and demolition operations; Standard Building Code, Chapter 33, regarding site work, demolition and construction; NFPA 101 Life Safety Code. 3. Construction safety is the responsibility of the contractor in accordance with the regulations and codes of the agency having jurisdiction, and according to the guidelines adapted by OSHA. 4. The Communications Equipment room Facilities Standard establishes a series of guidelines for specifying this particular item on any construction project at the University. This Facilities Standard is not to be regarded as a specification. GENERAL: 1. The Engineer shall furnish a section for Communications under the Electrical Specifications or under Division Contractor shall provide a Voice /Data Communication Equipment Room (CER) for each building level complete with equipment and finishes. The lowest level CER shall be used for Communication Service Entrance (CSER). Stack CER s where possible. Communication work shall be complete a number of days to be determined for each project, prior to the completion date of the project. 2. In general multiple CER s are required per floor if: Usable floor space exceeds 10,000 sq. ft. Cable length between CER and outlet, including slack, exceeds 295 ft., or conduit distance exceeds 240 ft (for the data signal only). PAGE NO
2 If a CER has more than 176 station drops, refer to UAB Communications Dept., Mr. Terry Weaver, If a CER serves multiple tenants or an office density of less than one work area per 100-sq. ft., larger areas may be served by a CER provided the cable length is met. 3. The following minimum size of CER is based on one outlet per 100-sq. ft. work area: Served Area CER at Least Up to 5,000 sq. ft. 8 X 10 >5,000 to 8,000 sq. ft. 10 X 12 >8,000 to 10,000 sq. ft. 12 X 14 Non-Hospital CSER 14 X16 Hospital CSER 16 X CER s shall be solely used for Communication Department equipment, H.S.I.S., and University Computing. Security backboard, fire alarm, intercom, CATV and other signal equipment shall be located in the electrical/mechanical rooms or in separate auxiliary or signaling rooms. 5. CER finishes shall be as follows: backboards covering all walls completely, 8 H X ¾ thick high-density commercial plywood, painted with two coats of fire retardant light gray paint. Sheetrock shall be wall painted. Flooring shall be static free asphalt/linoleum tile, with rubber base cove. Ceiling shall be drop layin type minimum 8-6 above floor with flush lighting. 6. Fluorescent lighting shall run parallel with long wall. Lighting intensity shall be at least 50-foot candles at 39 above floor. Emergency lighting shall be provided in each CER. Coordinate the lights location with UAB Telecommunications so that lights are not installed over the racks. 7. Door shall be lockable, minimum 36 wide and 80 high, opening out of room. 8. Fire Protection (if required by Codes): specify wire cages for sprinkler heads. Design drainage troughs to protect equipment from leakage in wet pipe systems. Consider using dry pipe system. 9. CER shall be provided with a controlled environment using a unit above ceiling to maintain a dust free area, 64 to 75 F, a 30 to 55% relative humidity, and a positive pressure with a minimum of one air change per hour, based on 4,500 BTU/hour heat load. PAGE NO
3 REVISIONDATE: 10. CER power and grounding requirement: Wiremold 3000 surface metal raceway placed 6 from floor on all backboards, with 20amp duplex receptacles on 18 centers. Strip shall be served with 3-20 amp branch circuits from emergency power if available. In addition, 4 individual outlet 20 amp 120V branch circuits shall be specified and located next to the ground bus at 7-8 from floor. Specify a #2/0 green ground riser through all CER s terminated on a ground bus, Square D # LBC165212, to be mounted on top right corner of a backboard. 11. The Engineer shall design a conduit riser system (using single line diagram) through all CER s consisting of six (6) 4 empty conduits with pull cord, 3 for Voice and 3 for Data. Conduits shall be aligned so that all conduits are positioned next to the backboard on one side by the door of the CER (not in the middle of the room), and sequenced 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 from left to right. Conduits shall terminate in each CER with a bushing 6 above floor and 4 below ceiling. Support conduits around top and bottom edge of backboard with Unistrut channel. Main Riser Copper and Fiber Optic Cables, Racks and communications hardware will be designed and installed by the UAB Telecommunications Department. 12. The Engineer shall design a Cable Tray System on all floor over the corridors for communication stations wiring. Tray shall be steel ladder type with a minimum of 3 side-wall and a minimum of 12 wide. Size shall be designed for present and future communications capacity. Four (4) 4 conduits from tray to top of backboard in CER shall be designed, and supported as Item 11 above. Tray shall not pass through firewalls; four to six 4 conduits shall connect the tray sections through firewalls. Conduit penetrations shall be sealed per Codes. Ground continuity of the system shall be maintained. 13. For stations wiring refer to Communication Raceway/Cabling System Standard # PRODUCTS: 1. Cable Tray acceptable Manufacturers: a) B-line b) Cope c) PW Industries d) Mono-Systems, Inc. e) Flex-All PAGE NO
4 EXECUTION: 1. Engineer shall consult Mr. Terry Weaver, RCDD ( address: early in the design to verify the capacity and specific requirements for each project, and submit construction documents for review and approval.
