EXPERIMENTAL ACTIVITIES The project development has involved a wide scope of testing activities, on field and post harvest, to assess the validity of ozone and electrolized water against several diseases and microbial activity. ToTal TesTs conducted: 46 disease TreaTed: cultivations TesTed: Brown spot of pear pseudomonas syringae disease Valsa canker white haze Brown rot on peach and apricot Bacterial canker of peach peach leaf curl rice Blast armillaria root disease metschnikowia esca disease gray mould late Blight powdery mildew mould / yeast european canker on apple and pear fire Blight apple and pear scab actinidia (kiwi) apple apricot Berries (other) celery cherry grape lemon lettuce mango melon orange peach pear plum prickly pear pumpkin radicchio rice sprout strawberry tomato zucchini
POST HARVEST OZONE TREATMENT On strawberries treated with ozone, preservation time can increase and even double: treated fruits do show higher quality and no decay after 10 days, while untreated fruits show decomposition traces already after 5 days. Microbial load is also lower after ozone treatment. treatment with ozone for 24h at 5 ppm product Before treatment and storage cfu/g cell storage with ozone 0 yeast Bacteria fungi T=2 no treatment after 5 days after 10 days cfu/g cell storage cfu: Colony-Forming Units test developed with: Institute for Sustainable Plant Protection, National Research Council - CNR official (CNR IPP) and IAMB International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies/ Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari (IAMB)
POST HARVEST OZONE TREATMENT When treated with ozone, strawberry preservation time can increase significantly also in absence of cold room storage. after 5 days preservation with continuous ozone at 0.1 ppm T=20 preservation with air test developed with: Institute for Sustainable Plant Protection, National Research Council - CNR official (CNR IPP) and IAMB International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies/ Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari (IAMB)
POST HARVEST OZONE TREATMENT Apples that were previously preserved in ozone atmosphere register a shelf-life double than apples preserved in standard cells. Damages appear after 1 week on standard cell apples, after 2 weeks on ozone treated apples. Mycobacterial load data are aligned with these measurements. apple granny smith tanken on after preservation in ozone cell 36 ufc/g apple granny smith tanken on after preservation in standard cell 870 ufc/g 1 week in air 1 week in air T=+18 T=+18 test developed by cristian carboni, de nora next
POST HARVEST OZONE TREATMENT Kiwi preserved with ozone show a 4% decrease of losses compared to standard preservation techniques. After 13 days, the pulp is more solid and colour is more uniform: ozone blocks the development of mycelia and spores. product Before treatment and storage (1 stock with low fungi, 1 stock with high fungi-botrytis) preservation in ozone cell after 3.5 months spores only in contact zones sample previously preserved with ozone 5 points (red) mycelia 29 points (blue) mold 13 days in air T=+18 sample previously preserved in standard cell preservation in cell with ethylene absorber (permanganate) widely distributed spores test developed by cristian carboni, de nora next 21 points (red) mycelia 41 points (blue) mold
