3 European Network on reducing marketing pressure on children - status The network was established January 2008 The network currently consists of 19 countries in the WHO European Region Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Latvia, Ireland, Israel, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, Sweden and the United Kingdom Observers WHO, EU, FAO, SCN, CI, IOTF Network secretariat: Norway

5 Overall goal of the European Network: To protect children s health through sharing experiences and best practices in order to identify and implement specific actions which will substantially reduce the extent and impact of all marketing to children of energy dense, micronutrient poor foods and beverages 5

6 Objectives of the network To constitute a coalition of committed countries who can identify and demonstrate specific actions to protect children against pressure from marketing To share and discuss experiences in work relating to regulation of food and beverage marketing to children To discuss approaches to control marketing of food and non alcoholic beverage to children, such as statutory regulation, self regulation, voluntary measures and co regulation To develop tools and share experiences to support monitoring of food and beverage marketing to children To discuss and come up with advice on the use of systems of categorizing foods as a tool to control the marketing of food and beverages. To follow up and identify how WHO HQ Recommendations and Network Code can be used to support member states in their work to protect children from food and beverage marketing. Report to various international meetings (WHA and WHO Euro)

7 Network activities: To support the work of WHO Headquarters on the development and implementation of the set of recommendations on marketing of foods and non alcoholic beverages to children (WHA 60.23) To support WHO Euro member states on the implementation of the set of recommendations To develop a Code as an example of what a set of recommendations might contain To develop instruments and protocols to support monitoring

8 Sweeps A systematic time limited monitoring of communication marketing practices Many types of marketing practices can be monitored Marketing on TV, in magazines, Internet and products in stores, communities, areas where children meet, events etc. Using sweep is one way of monitoring marketing communication. Other marketing communication techniques like using social networks such as Facebook, blogs and personalised marketing communication on e. g. text messages, e mail etc might call for other methods PROTOCOL FOR SWEEPS A tool for monitoring marketing of food and non-alcoholic drinks to children on Internet, TV and Grocery stores Developed by the European Network on reducing marketing pressure on children Draft March 2011

9 Work plan for the coming year (March 2011 March 2012) The European Network continues as a coalition of committed countries Support WHO Headquarters in completing the Implementation Framework Support WHO Euro member states in implementing the set of recommendations Continue the work on developing and testing tools for monitorering marketing to children (collaboration with CI and their Monitoring Manual) Report to the WHO Euro Regional Meeting
