20 Getting the Ball Rolling Citizens-Save-Libraries Grant United for Libraries secured $75,000 from the Neal-Schuman Foundation to support library advocacy at the local level for libraries with troubled budgets. Libby Post, President Communication Services When I met with them, they knew what their goal should be, but didn t know how to get there. After training the board and staff on building their base, developing their message and organizing a campaign, they had a roadmap to success. Michigan Bond Election Workshop: Preparing for Success George K. Baum & Company Public Policy Group Tell the story. The thought of losing something is more powerful than the thought of gaining something of equal value. When you go is as important as what you ask for. Voters vote yes for their dreams and no for their fears.
21 Timeline of events Advocacy / Informational (Feb. August ) 6 12 months prior to the election Feb 2013 celebrated 20 th anniversary & 450 millionth check-out! May 2013 Received Citizens Save Libraries grant July 2013 Training with Libby Post. On the last day, we formed our Advocacy Campaign Committee. August 2013 Vote Yes website & Facebook created; Bank account opened; Friends donated funds.paypal account established. 100 t-shirts made. April 2013 Board discussed need for an additional millage in 2014 June 2013 Budget committee presented scenarios; Board resolved to place a millage request on February 2014 ballot August 1, 2013 Create the Possibilities: Vote Yes committee met for the first time. Started researching printing costs for educational flyer for library
22 Create the Possibilities Committee - Advocacy The committee will exist to educate and enlist support from the community in order to successfully pass an operating millage for the SSLDL. Establish and provide support for a web page for the committee Send out at least two mailings to educate supporters about the millage. Obtain voters lists for Salem and South Lyon to identify supportive voters Raise community awareness of the needs of the library Promote the vote through community events, publications and other materials Conduct at least one phone bank to remind supporters of the upcoming vote.

27 Timeline of events Informational (August) 6 months prior to the election Submitted questions to the long-range planning committee to generate answers to internal FAQs Pulled list of voters for Salem & South Lyon to know how many educational brochures would be needed (12,325) Updated the entire staff about the campaign. Imagine the Possibilities Sept Began drafting educational literature & campaign getthefacts website Board approved ballot language, educational literature, campaign costs, timeline, & FAQs August

Also walkers and a dog(!) wearing bright Vote Yes t-shirts. Started researching advertisement options/costs for local newspaper Began talking at Chamber Meetings Sept-Feb. Created Library display with brochures/bookmarks; Created informational display at City Hall; started putting millage info in e-newsletter Sent ballot language to Washtenaw /Oakland County Sept Booth at Pumpkinfest. Passed out t- shirts/business cards/flyers. Got contact info of supporters. Sept

We had a 6 ft. banner made for inside the library to remind people to vote We created an informational powerpoint presentation We started planning to attend the Craft Show at the high school December 7 Doreen spoke at a City council meeting that was also televised
