3 Founded 1960 by Ford, Rockefeller Foundations; 1,350 staff from 34 countries; HQ at UPLB; scientists in rice-growing countries; Independent, non-profit, international organization; Funding largely by Western governments, philanthropies.
4 Why rice scientists and extension professionals? Students and young people avoid training and education in agriculture and science; Farmers are getting older, while very few young farmers are entering agriculture jobs; Extension workers and agriculture civil servants are also getting older. New and modern blood needed in the rice and agriculture sector.

The scholarship is important for me to study at the world s best rice institute under the supervision of scientists who have vast experience - Vu Thuong, Vietnam
7 Education Output 2: Resident Scientists 45 ASEAN Resident Scientists at IRRI over 5 years Focus: junior, mid-career scientists: Collaborative research with leading IRRI scientists; Experience and learn modern skills & techniques; World-class research facilities & field work; Dedicated time and space for high-quality research, publications, and products.
8 Education Output 3: Rice Breeding Academy 50 ASEAN NARES participants over 5 years The Modern NARES rice breeder: A comprehensive 6 non-consecutive 1-week module program over the course of 1 year;-- Applied techniques to speed quality, high-yielding rice variety development; Intensive hands-on experience with cutting-edge research & analytical programs taught by leading scientists; Networking with other NAREs, public & industry breeders. I hope to implement the techniques and strategies I have gained in Grain Quality and Molecular Breeding to improve Brunei s current rice varieties - Masjuwita Muhin, Brunei
9 Education Output 4: ASEAN Food Security Forum 110 ASEAN NARES participants over 5 years Week-long executive development forum: Focused learning and discussion on agricultural and rice sector development issues and solutions across ASEAN; Focus on rice sector interaction with broader economy for decreasing poverty and increasing food security; Led by IRRI economics and policy experts. I came here as a President and as a farmer...we need high-yielding varieties to address rising population and decreasing land area planted to rice, - H.E. U Thein Sein, Myanmar
10 Extension Output 1: Advanced Extension 125 ASEAN NARES participants + 3,000 indirect trainees over 5 years Season-long course for extension professionals 20 week-long rice crop course from seed to market; Guided by expert facilitators in crop management; Familiarity with mobile & online ICT tools for nutrient, water, and pest management recommendations; Teaching and learning experience with RiceCheck village programs; Post-course required Training of Trainers program facilitation for national extension system. The trainees became IRRI s best ambassadors to the farmer on the return of each, they brought back new practices to more than double traditional best yields - N. Borlaug, USA
11 Extension Output 2: Country-specific Rice Info Platforms Customized rice info platforms for all ASEAN rice-growing states Comprehensive ICT package: Multi-platform rice info & management package; Key for creating and supporting rice extension; Collaborative partnerships; Integrated into advanced extension SLT program; Online and mobile access for precision rice extension support and management
12 Extension Output 3: Rice Crop Forecasting Online rice crop forecasting system for 3 ASEAN countries* Real-time rice crop analysis to support policymakers: Mapping of rice crop area across countries; Track crop performance in real-time; Modeling and prediction of rice crop harvest timing, yield, and losses due to natural disasters; Real-life and forecasted information for crop insurance, policy planning and support *Other ASEAN countries to follow after first 5 years
