Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) Eastern Nile Technical Regional Office (ENTRO) ENTRO Capacity Building and Internship Program Azeb Mersha September, 2016 Central Asia Water Future Forum & Expo Almaty, Kazakhstan
Background The internship programs started during the ENPM project when ENTRO modify its implementation arrangement to use in-house expertise supported by small consultancies as required and partnership with university in internship program with the objective of supporting Eastern Nile Cooperation and contribute to sub basin institution building through brining the scientific community
Partnership
More Partnership 16 EN Universities + Ministries
Arrangement Young Professional capacity building program TOR will be developed Three month at ENTRO Introducing ENTRO s existing KP and analytical tools Provide platform for discussion and exchange of experience Engage them in project activities filling the gap Periodic progress assessment Strength the capacity through training Conduct workshops to disseminate and assure the quality of their work
Enriching the Knowledge base
Enhancing Knowledge Base
Improved Visualization of data Interactive PDFs Easy way of viewing GIS data for non professionals Mobile Apps to Visualize Real time data Enhanced Web Portal to provide available data to public 4-D (3-D animations over time) Visualizing Complex Data
ENTRO Library Documents (Reports, Annotated bibliography) State of the Basin Report Represents a compilation of existing knowledge that looks at historical water management & development, current practices looks ahead at the water development opportunities potentials and the main obstacles to these possibilities.
EN Atlas Eastern Nile Atlas Provides a spatial snapshot of the Eastern Nile, its Climate, Resources, Environment, Social and economic characteristics Interactive PDF
Interactive Toolkits Increase public domain information and analytical partnerships (incl. a community of EN modelers) Improved understanding of the EN basin Support investment decisions Promote integrated basin planning and management
Analytical Tools to assess issues of the Easter Nile
Analytical Products ENTRO also has developed and used a number of models addressing different issues in the EN.
Pool Elevation (masl) Modeling Tools Supporting Informed Decision Making Cascade Modeling Investment sequencing and its impact Simulate Water Uses by Country and by Sector on Downstream Users Total water use for irr. and pws per country (Mcm) S000 S001 S002 S003 S004 S005 S006 S007 Ethiopia Sudan Egypt South Sudan Total water use per country Total energy production (GWh) Baseline Scenario 1 Scenario 2 Scenario 3 Scenario 4 Scenario 5 YEAR Ver S000 S001 S002 S003 S004 S005 S006 Total Energy Production
Optimization tools Developed a number of Optimization tools to promote efficient use of resources ENMOS (EN Multi-Purpose Options Scoping) ENMCTM (EN Multi Commodity Trade Model) EN Agricultural Model SAM (Sudan Agricultural Model EAM (Egypt Agricultural Model) ETAM (Ethiopia Agricultural Model) SSAM (South Sudan Agricultural Model)
Eastern Nile Multi-Commodity Trade Model ENMCTM, Eastern Nile Multi-Commodity Trade Model, developed with the Objective of optimizing the net benefit in the region by promoting trade between the counties.
Commodity Database Commodities data base from different sources has been developed.
ENMOS (Eastern Nile Multi-Purpose Options Scoping) ENMOS (Eastern Nile Multi-Purpose Options Scoping) is Water Resources optimization model It works using GAMS optimization program for solving problem Use Excel as a database and presentation tool Support the analytical framework development for MSIOA study
Enhancing our Visibility
ENTRO Web Portal Strengthening the KB The Portal is serving as a means of disseminating the knowledge products and providing data service. Climate Analysis Tool Uploading public domain toolkits EN Seasonal Monitoring Section Web base IMS
Web based Information Management system - Developed for the four sub-basins to synthesize, consolidate and provide better access to information - The application further facilitates data query and access to source citation information e.i as hydrology, climate, infrastructure. etc.
ENTRO Web - Portal EN Seasonal Monitoring Section
Flood forecasting web application (Lake Tana)
Achievements - Mobile Apps (Nile) Mobile App development initiated; Nile App Nile Climate App Nile Flood App
Flood forecasting Mobile application A mobile application with similar functionalities as the flood web application is developed and the first release will be available
Capacity building - Training Regional / National Workshops USGS GIS Flood Tool Interactive Knowledge Tools /WB Team RIBASIM Training SWAT Model Remote Sensing Training Course GIS Training Course RIVERWARE Introductory Training
Capacity building Establish EN Knowledge EN University High Performance Computing Cluster Outreach Center Office furniture Reception/Meeting Room Books Library
Engaging Eastern Nile Universities Enhancement of EN data quality :Cairo University Special Studies with EN University GW SW Interaction in the Blue Nile: Khartoum University MCA of Productivity and Water Uses: Gezira University Dam Break Analysis; Addis Ababa University Surface Groundwater Resources in the Beles Sub-Basin: Addis Ababa University Nile Delta Flooding Due to Sea Level Rise: Cairo University Modeling the Impacts of Fish Aquaculture Production on Water Quality in the Northern Nile Delta: Cairo University Recession Agriculture : Jointly Watershed and Sedimentation in Blue Nile: Addis Ababa University Groundwater Potential in the EN: Khartoum University
Consultation and Dissemination Regional and National Workshop SUDAN Workshop May 2012 Ethiopia Workshop June 2012 ENTRO-EN Universities Egypt Workshop July 2012 Workshop Juba Workshop December 2012
Our Success More than 100 interns are enrolled The region has a number of universities, which have long tradition of working on water resources and they have a cutting-edge technical skill that ENTRO makes use of it Helped to have an innovative ways to move forward to build cooperative partnerships with a better professional interactions (with no politics ) o Enhancing KP, o Filling knowledge gaps, o Developing knowledge products o interactive tools o models
Our Success It is cost effective to use an input of YP to filling the knowledge gaps on areas where short term expertise are required compared to Consultants With the hydro politics of the basin, it is a challenge for ENTRO to disseminate its technical knowledge product. This program will help ENTRO to create an environment where practitioners can come together and collaborate in solving the shared problems of the basin.
Success of the Internship from interns side Networking - a network of young water resources professionals created that can change the future and ccontribution to the sustenance of the momentum in dialogue and inter-riparian interaction Capacity building - Interns were provided with training and other capacity building activities. Opportunity - Create an opportunity, access of information and data for researchers to conduct on issues of Easter Nile for more fact based information dissemination and communication Team Work - Team Work is the core of the internship activities. Get to know your team members. Learn from Each Other and create environment to work hard and get as much knowledge with short time
