Dear Northern Illinois Farmers, 2015 will long be remembered as a year of extremes. We started the growing season with below normal precipitation in March and April and many were concerned about the possibility of drought. Those dry conditions led to near perfect seedbed conditions, and tempted many to start planting corn a week or more earlier than normal. A cold snap in May resulted in somewhat slow emergence and led to some concerns with ILeVO seed treatment and several soil applied herbicides. Any fears we may have had about drought were put to rest in June. Most of Northern Illinois received between 200 and 300% of normal precipitation for the month. This extended rainy period led to a multitude of problems including emergence and stand establishment, fertility issues (nitrogen), and many weed control nightmares. July brought cooler than normal temperatures and just the type of environment that favors the development of foliar disease such as Northern Corn Leaf Blight (NCLB). NCLB is an economically important disease that has been on the increase in Northern Illinois for the last couple of years. There are very real differences in tolerance to NCLB based on genetics. Thankfully, DEKALB brand corn products, in general, are very tolerant to NCLB. That tolerance is just one reason for our consistent performance over a wide range of environments. Starting in August, precipitation in Northern Illinois dipped to well below average. While our cool, wet conditions early had set us up for some significant disease issues, our late season dry spell hindered development of white mold and sudden death syndrome, diseases that are typically troublesome in high yielding environments. This dry weather also lead to early maturation of the corn crop. With above normal temperatures in September and through October, harvest moistures were significantly dryer than normal. In spite of all of these extremes, many growers were still able to harvest greater than expected yields for both corn and soybeans. Asgrow and DEKALB performance was awesome again this year. From top to bottom, the Asgrow and DEKALB portfolios offer growers the most consistent, stable yields over a range of environments. Take a look at the information we have put together in this book. We think you ll find that, in spite of less than ideal commodity prices, we can help you reliably maximize revenues. As always, Thank you for your business! 4 2015 ILeVO Seed Treatment Trials In 2014, Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS) took its toll on many soybean fields across the state, and initial observations of ILeVO seed treatment proved to be very positive. This year we set out to evaluate the effect of ILeVO seed treatment across our lineup. The following data set includes 83 total replications, were randomly placed across the state, and did not target fields with a history of severe SDS. Bushels (Bu/A) ILeVO Treated No ILeVO As you can see in the chart to the left, differences within the Asgrow lineup were minimal. With an absence of significant disease pressure this year, there were no major differences in how particular brands responded to the treatment versus others. As disease pressure and incidence increases, we would expect brands that are more susceptible to SDS would show greater yield gains than those with greater tolerance. Disease levels in 2015 did not allow for that yield separation. The biggest differences came from planting dates. The April and early May planted comparisons showed a 1.1 bu/ac advantage for the ILeVO treated beans. Late May/ June planted plots showed no advantage to ILeVO treatment. This trend should be expected as early planted soybeans are more susceptible to SDS infections. Note also the yield difference of the first two planting date ranges to the last. Bushels (Bu/A) April 16 - April 30 May 1 - May 16 May 17 - June 7 ILeVO Treated No ILeVO SUMMARY While cool, wet conditions early were ideal for an SDS outbreak this year, the dry weather we experienced from late July through the end of the season really reduced the impact of SDS, and made it difficult to see big advantages for ILeVO. While we saw minimal yield gains from ILeVO treatments in these trials in 2015, we believe it is possible to see much higher yield gains when SDS pressure is higher and/or susceptible varieties are planted. We will likely continue to evaluate the effects of ILeVO in ACC FI=Acceleron Fungicide/Insecticide ACC FPV=Acceleron Fungicide + Poncho/Votivo ALWAYS READ AND FOLLOW PESTICIDE LABEL DIRECTIONS. All Acceleron treatments provided advantages over untreated seed. ILeVO increased the yield of both Acceleron Treatments and PV showed an advantage over standard FI treatment. 5

2015 Soybean Planting Date Trials (Bu/A) /16 to 4/24 4/29 to 5/4 5/19 to 5/24 In 2015, we conducted planting date studies at 7 locations across Illinois. The turn of the calendar from April to May proved to be the best time this past year to plant beans based on these trials. The earlier planted beans got off to a rough start, with some locations suffering stand loss due to rain shortly after planting. The later planted beans suffered more from the wet June. The mid April planted beans did out yield those that were planted in mid to late May by 2.5 bu. Theoretically speaking, earlier planted beans tend to have an advantage, as they have more leaf area in June to harvest more sunlight, which drives more photosynthesis. That doesn t always play out in the field, as mother nature may provide rain at the right or wrong time in a plants life cycle. 6

2015 Soybean Row Spacing Trials (Bu/A) " 15 or 20 " At 5 locations in 2015, we compared 30 in row soybeans to narrow row soybeans. 4 of the 5 locations were 15 in rows, while 1 location was 20 in rows. Based on our trials, soybeans planted in 30 in rows yield 3.1 bu/ac less than soybeans planted in 15 or 20 in rows. This is similar to what we saw last year, which was a 3.3 bu/ac difference. Narrower row configurations maximize light interception, driving more photosynthesis in the plant. Earlier plant canopy also aides in weed control as well. Seeding rate was held constant so the yield increase from narrow rows is not coming from more plants and does not have additional seed costs to cover. 8

2015 Soybean In-Season Fungicide Response Comparisons Studies located across Central Illinois in 2014 & 2015 (Bu/A) Average Untreated Treated Fungicide applications have grown in popularity across Central Illinois the last couple of years. In our trials, we have seen an average yield increase of 4.2 bu/ac in the last 2 years. Our data showed a response in 2014 of 5.2 bu/ac, and a 3.3 bu/ac response in In our comparisons, the beans treated with a foliar fungicide application yielded more than the untreated 81% of the time. And the yield increase was enough to pay for the cost of application 64% of the time. Like most things, it doesn t win 100% of the time, or pay 100% of the time. But the average increase in our data delivers a positive return on investment. Applications of foliar fungicides during pod set and grain fill help protect yield potential reduce disease pressure, and potentially reduce plant stress. 9

Fantasy Farming Challenge In 2013, the Monmouth Learning Center created an educational competition for area high school agriculture programs. Since then, the Fantasy Farming Challenge has grown each year. In 2015, we had 17 participating schools from Illinois and Missouri, providing an opportunity for hundreds of students to learn more about crop production and the agriculture industry. In February, students in the participating schools attended a presentation where they learned about basic corn production, they key decisions a grower must make every season, and the risks & costs associated with those decisions. From there, the students must design a corn plot and make the following key decisions: Select a product from a list of several different genetic families & trait packages Whether to add a soil insecticide Planting date (Early, Mid, or Late) Planting population Row spacing (20 or 30 ) Lbs of nitrogen per acre Timing of nitrogen application (All preplant, or split between preplant and in season application) Whether to apply a foliar fungicide Most of these decisions have a cost associated with them, and there are several fixed costs for each plot based on equipment, fuel, herbicides, land rent, etc. Once their decisions have been submitted, the Learning Center staff plants each schools plot, implementing all of the choices the students made. During the season, each school takes a field trip to the Monmouth Learning Center to see their plot and learn more about agronomy as well as career opportunities in the industry. At the end of the season, all plots are harvested, yields are adjusted to 15% moisture, and the grain sold on the cash market. There are two prizes given out: one is awarded to the school who produces the highest yield, and one is awarded to the school who returns the highest profit based on their decisions. In 2015, for the first time we had one school win in both categories. Congratulations to the students at Monmouth-Roseville High school in Monmouth, IL! 14

During the first true heat spell we got this summer, somewhere around that 2nd week of June, I noticed that some corn was rolling, to the row. After looking at my plot stakes I could see it was only rolling in strips that were not treated with QuickRoots product- the QuickRoots-treated corn looked healthy and showed no heat stress that humid morning. I noticed more stalk girth in the QR-treated strip, then dug plants from each strip and noticed the same contrast with the root mass. The QuickRoots strips had significantly more roots, and thinking about the saturated soils this spring- they had the ability to better absorb nutrients, and more roots to breathe in the low oxygen environment, leading to stress mitigation. Having a way to alleviate stress with other corn in the area that was in the V3-V5 growth stages at that time, where ear development would have been impacted by poor soil growing conditions followed by heat stress, could have made a huge different in plant health and performance. The yield difference in that plot between the strips showed a +18 bushel advantage to the QR! Just one location, but that s one heck of an ROI! The planting population on the 30 in rows is 35,000 plants/acre, and the planting pop on the 20 in rows is 39,000 plants/acre, essentially a 10% increase in seeding rates. Each location was side-dressed with an additional 50 units of N. This year the data shows an average of a 1.6 bu/ac yield increase for narrowing to 20 in corn and increase seeding rates. This is the 3rd year we have done these trials, with 2013 data giving us a 3.0 bu/ac increase, and 2014 trials showing a 1.9 bu/ac increase. The ranges in response varied across locations this year, just like we have seen before. This year the lowest average response at one location was a negative 15.9 bu/ac, while the highest at any location was 12.7 bu/ac. As you can see in the graph there are some differences in response between products, which has happened the previous 2 years as well. Previously the 20 in row corn has been about 0.5 pts drier at harvest, but this year we did not see that. Some products can tolerate higher populations, while some cannot. This is a not a balanced data set, meaning that all 8 products were not represented at all 10 locations. So it is not safe to make any comparisons of one products performance to another. 18

At 8 locations across central Illinois in 2015 we looked at the N response of 8 products. Trials were a combination of corn on corn and rotated ground. Approximately 70% of a standard N rate was applied preplant then the plot received approximately 40% of a standard N rate in a sidedress application. With average rainfall at % of normal in June/July across a good portion of the state, it is not surprising that we saw a large response to the additional in season N application. These trials showed an average of yield increase of 21 bu/ac. Looking at individual locations the highest average yield increase across all 8 products was 55.4 bu/ac, while the lowest was 5.2 bu/ac. The largest average response by product (DKC58-06) was a 28bu (13.9%) yield increase while the smallest was 13.8bu (6.4%). If differences like this are somewhat predictable and consistent, it would be logical to think we could fine tune N recommendations by product, but much more work needs to be done. In the meantime remember that no two years are the same and over time applying a portion of your N sidedress is a good way to reduce risk and maximize yield potential. This is a balanced data set, meaning that all 8 products were represented at all 8 locations. So it is safe to make product to product comparisons in this data. 19

2015 Fungicide Response Trials DEKALB Brand Blends In 2015 in Illinois, we evaluated the response of 6 products across 12 locations to a fungicide application at tassel. The sites are a combination of corn on corn and rotated ground, and tillage types. The trials are generally typical corn plots, planted twice as long as normal, with the back half sprayed crossways with an airplane. A wet June drove quite a bit of disease in the corn crop this year, predominantly NCLB and GLS. These trials showed an average yield increase of 20.9 bu/ac by spraying the fungicide. Assuming $3.75 corn, breakeven is about 10 bu/ac. This year, 9 of the 12 locations delivered a positive return on investment. There are some slight differences in response between corn products in the magnitude of their response, but they all responded. This is a balanced data set, meaning that all 6 products were not represented at all 12 locations. Some corn products were evaluated at only a portion of the locations. Those are represented in the table below. Product Advantage Moisture Difference # Location DKC55-20RIB Brand Blend DKC63-33RIB Brand Blend DKC63-60RIB Brand Blend

Effect of Crop Rotation (Bu/A) Rotated Corn on Corn Monmouth Urbana Flanagan 1 Flanagan 2 Beason Tremont Average This year we were able to compare the yield of corn following corn to corn following soybeans in 6 plots. Each of these plots had the same set of products in each rotation (products did vary by location). As we would expect the yield of corn on corn was lower than rotation, by an average of about 20 bu/ac (about 10%). Corn on corn yielded less in all 6 plots but by as little as 1-2bu/ac at 2 locations and as much as 35-52bu/ac at 2 locations. The location called Flanagan 2 received a VT fungicide application while Flanagan 1 did not. However, the Beason and Tremont locations also received VT fungicide. Notice how much more uniform the rotated yields were across locations. Environmental stresses almost always impact corn on corn worse was a challenging year for corn on corn in some areas. 21

Insect Update for Illinois, 2015 Preston Schrader is our Insect Management Technology Development Rep for Illinois. He has put together the following letter and data summaries for Illinois. IL Insect Update (from Preston Schrader, Insect Management Technology Development Manager) Throughout the 2015 growing season, I had the opportunity to travel around Illinois and survey insect pests of both corn and soybeans. Similar to varying crop conditions across the state, corn rootworm densities also varied as a result of heavy June rains killing larvae. In addition to saturated soils reducing CRW pressure, Best Management Practices (BMPs) used to help manage corn rootworm have been important in controlling this billion dollar pest and reducing the overall population. These BMPs include: Rotating to soybeans or another crop suitable for their geography Using effective pyramided dual mode of action technology to help manage and protect against insects both above and below the soil If farmers chose to plant a single-mode of action technology, using a soil-applied insecticide on fields where the potential for moderate to high rootworm pressure exists. While weather was a very important factor in reducing the numbers of corn rootworms, the adoption of BMPs by farmers, academics, seed companies, and retailers helped to play a role in the effective management of corn rootworms in Be aware that corn rootworms were still observed throughout the traditional rootworm areas of Illinois, so scouting is highly recommended for minimizing potential damage next year. It s important to consider that there are no effective rescue treatments available for corn rootworm larvae, and root feeding can result in tremendous yield loss and harvestability challenges due to lodged corn. Additionally, corn rootworm populations can increase rapidly from year to year with females capable of depositing more than 1,000 eggs in a growing season. If corn rootworm populations are not properly managed, growers may be challenged with heavy rootworm pressure in future year(s). The future of rootworm control looks promising, as our next generation product, SmartStax PRO, has been exhibiting exceptional root protection in our field trials. In addition to corn rootworm, a robust European corn borer population was observed in Illinois in These observations occurred in conventional corn fields throughout the state ranging from low to medium densities with some outbreaks that caused dropped ears and heavily damaged stalks. One particular inspection of a conventional corn field in Lee County, IL, yielded an average of 10 borers per stalk. With an apparent abundance of European corn borer, we did not observe any European corn borer feeding in fields with Bt corn products. Every year is different from the last, from weather to pest densities, and various obstacles can pop up. It s important select the right products for effective insect management in

Climate FieldView Pro Field Health Imagery and Northern Corn Leaf Blight While the Field Health imagery from Climate FieldView Pro continues to help provide farmers insight on what s going on in their fields, it s utility became especially evident in recognizing disease outbreaks from Northern Corn Leaf Blight (NCLB) in Planting of susceptible germplasm led to hybrids becoming inundated with disease, so much so that Field Health images were able to pick this up. Notice below how corn products with distinct differences in tolerance to NCLB showed up visually in these images. COMPETITOR PRODUCT WITH WEAK TOLERANCE TO NORTHERN CORN LEAF BLIGHT DEKALB BRAND PRODUCT WITH GOOD TOLERANCE TO NORTHERN CORN LEAF BLIGHT July 10th, 2015 August 3rd, 2015 August 27th, 2015 In the image above, again note the difference between a competitor brand product (on the right) with weak tolerance to NCLB, compared to a DEKALB Brand product on the left with higher tolerance. This particular image was taken from a user s smartphone, highlighting the flexibility of access a farmer can obtain with this service. Not only can one see these images in a mobile format, but they can also use it as a scouting tool to help them precisely walk to seemingly poor spot, and potentially make a proper diagnosis, all with their phone or tablet! 28 2015 FTN Spatial Trials In 2015 we continued to expand our FTN project. As some of you may remember, our FTN plots are purposely placed in areas of a field that cover multiple soil types, and often stressful ones. Plots are harvested using yield monitors, and are analyzed spatially. You can see examples of the results below. We do this with the intent of pooling all spatial data together, and analyzing our DEKALB Brands by various soil characteristics. Our goal is to continually improve the placement recommendations for each of our DEKALB Brands on your farm. With each plot summary, like you see on this page, brands are analyzed by soil type. While this can be useful in a couple of situations, most of the benefit comes from pooling many plots together, and then further analyzing brands by multiple soil characteristics for a better, more accurate representation of how a particular brand may react in that situation. 28

Decision Making From FTN Data Like all of you collecting yield data, it only matters if you do something with it. Thanks to advanced data analysis, we are able to take all of our spatial data and produce reports and recommendations from summaries like you see below. Each example is a real-world scenario where particular products differ in their ability to handle a given situation. Look over the below examples, and see just one of the many ways DEKALB strives to make every acre of your farm profitable. The graph to the left shows the ability of Hybrid E to tolerate poorly drained soils; however, it falls behind in more well drained soils. The graph to the right shows the ability of Hybrid E to tolerate poorly drained soils; however, it falls behind in more well drained soils. At right is an example that shows a weakness of a given product in coarse soils versus two other products, whereas in medium texture soils it does well. This is an example of finding and enforcing product placement watchouts. The prime agricultural class of any soil type can be determined by using the optimum productivity index (PI) shown in Table S2 of Bulletin 811 and the following author recommended prime agricultural class scale. Soil types with optimum PI s from are in Class A, from are in Class B, and from are in Class C. Soil types in Bulletin 811 with optimum PI s equal to or below 99 are in the other agricultural land class and not considered prime agricultural land. 29

2015 Corn Planting Rate Demo All modern corn products respond to population in some fashion. This response varies by product. In the past these differences would have been described as ear flex, but in fact all products have a degree of flex, just as they are all somewhat determinant or fixed. Monsanto goes to great lengths to determine how a product will respond to population. These data shown here represent preliminary results for a few of the products tested through the GEN trials in The product shown on the top of the page, DKC54-38RIB brand blend, shows a strong positive response to increased population. The picture of ears from this product harvested over a range of populations support the data. While the ears at the lowest population are very impressive, there is not much change in ear size as population increases. Consequently as population increases, so does yield. The middle product, DKC62-77RIB brand blend, shows different response to population. Looking at the photo of the ears, we see that as population is increased, ear size is reduced. It has a strong positive response to population from 24,000 to 36,000 plants per acre, as the ear size doesn t increase enough at lower populations to compensate for fewer ears per acre. That said, the ear size can decrease quite a bit at higher populations, above 36,000 plants per acre, so in most cases it is not beneficial to plant this product above 36,000 seeds per acre. The bottom product, DKC58-06RIB brand blend, shows a very traditional response to population. As population increases, so does yield over a range of normal populations. The ear size is somewhat reduced at the highest population, but it should be noted how consistent ear size is within a population. 30
