Winter wheat, winter oats, winter rye and triticale. 60 g product per hectare. One per crop. Latest time of application: Winter wheat: Before first node detectable. Winter oats, winter rye, triticale: 31st December. Other specific restrictions: To avoid the build-up of resistance, do not apply this or any other product containing an ALS inhibitor herbicide with claims for control of grass-weeds more than once to any crop. READ THE LABEL BEFORE USE. USING THIS PRODUCT IN A MANNER THAT IS INCONSISTENT WITH THE LABEL MAY BE AN OFFENCE. FOLLOW THE CODE OF PRACTICE FOR USING PLANT PROTECTION PRODUCTS. 190 Lexus CLASS herbicide
Restrictions Lexus CLASS must not be applied to any crop suffering from stress as a result of drought, water-logging, low temperature, pest or disease attack, nutrient deficiency, soil compaction or other factors reducing crop growth. Do not use Lexus CLASS on crops undersown or to be undersown with grasses, clover or other legumes or any other broad-leaved crop. Because some non-target crops are highly sensitive to Lexus CLASS, avoid damage by drift onto broad-leaved plants outside the target area, or onto surface waters or ditches. Thorough cleansing of equipment is also very important see separate section. Do not apply within seven days of rolling the crop. The only ALS-inhibiting herbicides which may be applied to a crop previously treated with Lexus CLASS are ALIAS SX, ALLY MAX SX, AVRO SX, BARTON WG, BiPLAY SX, BOXER, CHIMERA SX, CLEANCROP MONDIAL, CONCERT SX, FINISH SX, GALAXY, GF 184, HARMONY M SX, HIKER, HUNTER, INKA SX, JUBILEE SX, LORATE, PRESITE SX, RATIO SX, REFINE MAX SX, SIMBA SX, SPITFIRE, STARANE GOLD, STARANE VANTAGE, STARANE XL or TRATON SX. Following crops (see also following table) Only cereals, oilseed rape, field beans, red or white clover or grass may be sown in the year of harvest of a cereal crop treated with Lexus CLASS. Ploughing is not a requirement. Minimal cultivation or direct drilling is supported. However, regardless of whatever previous chemical treatments have been applied to the field, in general establishing oilseed rape using direct drilling or subsoiling techniques will always have an elevated degree of risk due to the lack of soil movement and less seed to soil contact, so cultivation is recommended. herbicide Lexus CLASS 191
Permitted ALS-herbicide tank-mixes/sequences and following crop restrictions Autumn/winter Spring sequential Permitted crops Permitted crops or early spring applications to be sown in the to be sown in the applications (see labels) same calendar year following spring Lexus CLASS None Cereals, oilseed rape, No restrictions field beans, clover and grass Lexus CLASS Alias SX, Cereals, oilseed rape, No restrictions Ally Max SX, field beans, grass Avro SX, BiPlay SX, Chimera SX, Cleancrop Mondial, Concert SX, Finish SX, Harmony M SX, Jubilee SX, Lorate, Presite SX, Ratio SX, Refine Max SX, Simba SX and Traton SX Lexus CLASS Inka SX Cereals, oilseed rape, No restrictions field beans Lexus CLASS Barton WG, Boxer, Cereals, oilseed rape*, Cereals, oilseed rape, Galaxy, GF 184, Hiker, field beans and grass field beans, grass, Hunter, Spitfire, linseed, sugar beet, Starane Gold, peas, potatoes, Starane Vantage and clover, maize, carrots Starane XL and transplanted brassicas None Lexus CLASS Cereals, oilseed rape, No restrictions field beans, clover and grass Note: If Lexus CLASS is used in tank-mix or sequence with any other product, any following crop recommendations of the partner product must be observed. * Vigour reductions may be seen in a following oilseed rape crop after treatment with Barton WG, Boxer, Galaxy, GF 184, Hiker, Hunter, Spitfire, Starane Gold, Starane Vantage or Starane XL after a dry summer. This will be outgrown and will not result in yield loss. 192 Lexus CLASS herbicide
Crop failure In the event of crop failure for any reason, sow only winter wheat within one month or spring wheat within three months of application of Lexus CLASS. Prior to resowing, soil should be ploughed and cultivated to a depth of at least 15cm. After 3 months, follow the recommendations in the Following Crops section. General information Lexus CLASS is a powerful herbicide with foliar and root activity against Black-grass and a wide range of broad-leaved weeds. It is most effective when applied to small, actively growing weeds. The time taken for symptoms to appear and death to occur may vary between species. In some weed species, depending on weather conditions, symptoms may not be apparent for up to four weeks. Good spray cover of the weeds must be obtained. Lexus CLASS has a moderate residual life in soil under normal conditions. The residual activity is reduced by high soil temperatures due to increased degradation of the active ingredient. Weed control may also be reduced when soil conditions are very dry. Nevertheless, with adequate soil moisture, susceptible weeds germinating soon after treatment will be controlled. herbicide Lexus CLASS 193
Recommendations for use Crops/varieties and timing Lexus CLASS can be used on all varieties of winter wheat, winter oats (including naked oats), winter rye and triticale between the growth stages given below. Winter wheat may be sprayed from the 2 leaf (GS12) stage in the autumn to before first node detectable growth stage (GS31) in the spring. Winter oats, winter rye and triticale may be sprayed from the 2 leaf stage to December 31st. WINTER WHEAT OATS, RYE, TRITICALE up to December 31st 2 leaf 3 leaf Start of tillering Mid tillering 1st node detectable GS12 GS13 GS31 Crop safety Under severe climatic conditions, including frost and when significant variation occurs between day and night temperatures, transient phytotoxic symptoms (yellowing, slight necrotic leaf spotting) may appear. Experience shows that these symptoms disappear in a few days as soon as the physiology of the crop returns to normal and there is no effect on final yield. Never use Lexus CLASS in tank-mix with oil or other adjuvants. 194 Lexus CLASS herbicide
Rate of use Lexus CLASS is recommended for use at 60g per hectare. Lexus CLASS may be tank-mixed or used in sequence with several other cereal herbicides in order to extend the range of weeds controlled, or as part of a Black-grass resistance management programme. Application Apply Lexus CLASS in l/ha water in a MEDIUM spray and applied at a pressure of 2-3 bar. When crops are thick or weed growth is dense use the higher water volume. When applying Lexus CLASS, care should be taken not to overlap spray swaths. Limit to the number of applications One per crop. Weather Lexus CLASS may be applied provided the temperature is above freezing (0 C). As residual activity is important for best results, avoid application of Lexus CLASS under very dry conditions or onto very dry soil. The product is rainfast within 1 hour of application Soil Lexus CLASS can be used on all soil types. On highly alkaline soils (ph > 7.7) the residual activity of Lexus CLASS is reduced, but the contact control of grass and broadleaved weeds will still be achieved. Lexus CLASS is more persistent in soils of low ph. herbicide Lexus CLASS 195
Resistance management Lexus CLASS contains flupyrsulfuron-methyl, which is an ALS-inhibitor, also classified by the Herbicide Resistance Action Committee as Group B. Use only as part of a resistance management strategy that includes cultural methods of control and does not use ALS inhibitors as the sole chemical method of grass-weed control. When herbicides with the same mode of action are used repeatedly over several years in the same field, selection of resistant biotypes can take place. These can propagate and may become dominating. A weed species is considered resistant to a herbicide if it survives a correctly-applied treatment at the recommended dose. Development of resistance with a weed species can be avoided or delayed by alternating (or tank-mixing) with suitable products having a different mode of action. A strategy for preventing and managing resistance should be adopted. Guidelines have been produced by the Weed Resistance Action group and copies are available from the HGCA, CPA, your distributor, crop adviser or product manufacturer. Strains of some annual grasses (e.g. Black-grass, wild oats, and Italian rye-grass) have developed resistance to herbicides which may lead to poor control. Resistance management strategies should integrate both chemical and cultural approaches. Cultural measures play an essential role in limiting weed populations and preventing or reducing the risk of resistance development e.g. ploughing, delayed drilling, rotations, stale seed-beds. However, herbicides are also important in preventing crop competition and reducing seed shed. Optimum efficacy is seen when Lexus CLASS is applied in tank-mix with a suitable partner. (2) Regrowth of Chickweed may occur where residual activity is reduced by excessive rainfall, warm soil conditions or very dry soils. (3) Control of poppy is best achieved by contact activity on emerged plants. Plants germinating after application may not be controlled. Note: A dose of 36 g/ha is sufficient if the weed population only contains Shepherd s-purse, Volunteer Oilseed Rape, Charlock, Mayweeds and/or Groundsel at the above growth stages. This should be increased to 48 g/ha if Red Dead-nettle, Chickweed and/or forget-me-not are present. The full dose (60 g/ha) should be applied for activity on other or larger weeds beyond these growth stages. herbicide Lexus CLASS 197
Weed control in winter wheat Option 1 Lexus CLASS use in sequences with preemergence herbicides Lexus CLASS use may be considered in conjunction with the use of a pre-emergence herbicide. Ideally any pre-emergence herbicide should be applied within hours of drilling. This is particularly important where no pre-harvest spray (e.g. glyphosate) has been applied. Choice of pre-emergence herbicides, crop safety and efficacy will depend upon seedbed quality and conditions. For optimum activity sequential applications of Lexus CLASS should be made within 4-6 weeks of a pre-emergence treatment. Options available are Avadex Excel, Crystal/Ice/Trooper, pendimethalin, Movon, Vigon, Liberator, Firebird or Defy. Using a pre-emergence herbicide mentioned is an important part of our resistance management strategy, so the different modes of action of the products listed below should be taken into account when planning your programmes. If a pendimethalin product is used pre-emergence, alone or in a tank-mix, a tank-mix of Lexus CLASS + the same pendimethalin product may not be used post-emergence. Option 2 Tank-mixtures with pendimethalin A tank mix of 60g Lexus CLASS plus pendimethalin will give improved control of Annual Meadow-grass, Field Pansy, Speedwells, Poppy and Chickweed. This mixture will allow increased flexibility of application timing by maintaining residual activity from very early applications. 198 Lexus CLASS herbicide
Option 3 Post-emergence sequences using non ALS herbicide options Lexus CLASS may not be used in a post-emergence tank-mix or sequence with any other flupyrsulfuron-containing product. On winter wheat it may be necessary to consider using a further post-emergence herbicide. Approved contact herbicides e.g. Topik, Axial or Traxos may follow Lexus CLASS treatments as directed on product literature. Black-grass control strategy in winter oats Apply Lexus CLASS from the 2-leaf stage of the crop until December 31st. Avoid growing winter oats on known resistant or difficult/high Black-grass population fields. Ideally only grow Winter Oats in fields with no Black-grass or low/moderate sensitive Black-grass populations. If known Black-grass resistance, do not use Lexus CLASS. To avoid the build-up of Black-grass resistance use all possible cultural methods of control. Delay drilling where possible. Ensure stale seedbed technique used, prepare seedbed and wait for flush of Black-grass before drilling, then apply glyphosate. Drill using high seed rates. Apply Lexus CLASS post-emergence at the 1-2 leaf stage of the Black-grass. Do not use adjuvants with Lexus CLASS. Do not use other post-emergence herbicides such as pendimethalin on oats. herbicide Lexus CLASS 199
Black-grass control strategy in winter rye and triticale Apply Lexus CLASS from the 2 leaf stage of the crop until December 31st. A key tank-mixture is Lexus CLASS + Stomp. Do not use adjuvants and wetters with Lexus CLASS. Ideally try to grow winter rye or triticale if fields that do not have high and/or resistant Black-grass populations. To avoid the build-up of Black-grass resistance use all possible cultural methods of control. Use of adjuvants Never use Lexus CLASS in tank-mix with oil or other adjuvants.
