INTRODUCTION 4 Agricultural growth is more important for Africa than for any other continent. About 70 percent of people in Africa and roughly 80 percent of the continent's poor live in rural areas. These people depend on agriculture and non-farm rural enterprises for their livelihoods, and increasingly are unable to meet their basic food needs as population pressure on land grows, and land and water resources become scarce or degrade and agricultural productivity stagnates.
What s in the wave? 5 Agriculture and agribusiness together are projected to be a US$ 1 trillion industry in Sub- Saharan Africa (SSA) by 2030 (compared to US$ 313 billion in 2010), and they should be at the top of the agenda for economic transformation and development
agribusiness 6 Agribusiness can play a critical role in jump-starting economic transformation through the development of agro-based industries that bring much-needed jobs and incomes. Successful agribusiness investments in turn stimulate agricultural growth through the provision of new markets and the development of a vibrant input supply sector.
Nigeria in Perspective 7 Population: 160million Youth population: 35million (age 18-35) Unemployed youth: 80% (CBN 2014) Arable land: 84million hectares Cultivated arable land: <40% Population below poverty line: 70% Hunger rate: 13million Green Economy: The solution to man s dilemma
8 Lessons from the Landscape: what we have done We have identified that Africa is rich in resources: human, natural and potential economic resources We have identified that extreme hunger, youth unemployment, food insecurity, postharvest losses & wastage, desertification and environmental degradation are African s worst nightmare.
our strategy 9 OGUNMOD farmers academy s agribusiness center, Nigeria is: addressing food insecurity, youth unemployment through profitable agriculture, agricultural value chain, agribusiness incubation, post-harvest losses reduction, agricultural waste management and environmental preservation.
