GOOD PRACTICES OF REGIONAL ADAPTATION ACTIONS FOR COASTAL AREAS Dr. Grit Martinez Ecologic Institute, Berlin
Regional Adaptation Strategies for the German Baltic Sea Coast (RADOST) Ecologic Institute, Berlin
Regional Adaptation Strategies for the German Baltic Sea Coast (RADOST) There are various scales and actors involved in adaptation. Some types of adaptation are triggered of by governments on behalf of society, in anticipation of change and in response of individual events. RADOST is such a type of an adaptation project. Initiated and funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Project duration: July 2009 to June 2014 Funding: 9 Million Euro
Challenges for the German Baltic coastline of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein Floods: Erosion: Changes in drifts: Two Thirds of our coast lines are under constant treath (in addition to rising sea level). Risks for businesses, natural habitats and people. Burden for ports and touristic infrastructure. Rise in Temperture: Impact on water quality and attactivity of the German Beaches.
Project Region und Focus Activities Denmark Focus issues: Coastal Protection Kiel Area Schlei Trave Luebeck Bay Rostock Darss Warnow Peene Adlergrund Lubmin Poland Tourism/Beach Management Oder Estuaries Water Management/ Agriculture Ports/ Maritime Economy Nature Conservation/ Use Renewable Energies Fokus Areas Oder
Essential idea of the project: To establish a close linkage between research and practice. Core consortium of 17 partners that receive direct funding from BMBF. In addition RADOST involves a multitude of network partners (research organisations, businesses, public authorities and NGO s). At the time of proposal submission, this network included around 60 partners. It will be continuously expanded in the course of the project.

Implementation Projects There is a lack of information on good practices in adaptation actions. At RADOST we also aim to illustrate with and to our local partners the economic and social opportunities of innovative responses to climate change. Two examples of regional adaptation projects (out of 17) 1. Combining coastal protection constructions with diving tourism activities 2. Concepts for the aquaculture industry (IMTA - Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture)
Artificial Reef Modules The most popular reason to build a reef is to create new fishing sites, to enhance recreational diving and to increase reef resources, often to enhance tourisum. Everyone from a small artisenal fishing village to a five star resort benefits when reefs are created or enhanced.

Good practices for regional adaptation actions While the political debate largely revolves around how much adaptation is required by whom, how to finance it and how to support it, practical development cooperation is faced with the question of how adaptation can get off the ground. There is a lack of information on good practices in adaptation actions. RADOST aims to contribute to the exchange between good practices of regional adaptation actions in coastal areas. Europe has to adapt and should also assist developing countries as they are most vulnerable in terms of communities, economic sectors and ecosystems.

Good practises of regional adaptation actions in coastal areas - How can (regional) adaptation and resilience concepts be operationalised? - What are regional adaptive governance processes and strategies? - How can regional adaptation in coastal zone areas be fostered? - What is the role of adaptive learning processes?
