5 Abiotic stresses a big opportunity! Although abiotic stress factors cause significant yield losses to farmers, little attention has so far been paid to the development of anti-stress technologies! 5

8 Underlining the importance of stress mitigation! The arable land is very limited, and almost all of it is under sub-optimal conditions for plant growth. Pest and diseases matter but 70% of the yield potential has been calculated to be lost to unfavorable environments, even in developed agricultures! Stress ranking (FAO and other sources) (Unpredictable) drought is the single most important factor affecting world food security. Salinity: Some 380 million ha, almost a third of the area farmed, is affected by salt, particularly NaCl. Acidity and degraded soils: ca. 40% of the world s arable land is associated with a ph less than 5, where growth is hindered by high aluminum or manganese content. (important in South America: 380 million ha affected) Nutrient deficiency: Macro- and Micro-nutrients Low and high temperatures: For example, in the Andes 70% of land devoted to potato production is prone to cold stress. Excessive heat is known to be a problem for cowpea, oil seeds and vegetables. 8

38 Our contribution matters! Mitigation of abiotic stresses is key to increasing agricultural productivity. The stresses with the biggest impact are draught, salinity, acidity and nutrient deficiency, followed by heat, cold, high ph and others. Way too little attention has so far been paid to the development of anti-stress technologies. In the near future, CE may contribute to grow more from less. 38
