3 Detailed program SciLifeLab - a short introduction Presentation: 9:30, 12:00 & 15:00 Air/Fire lecture room Science for Life Laboratory, SciLifeLab, is a national center for molecular biosciences with focus on health and environmental research. SciLifeLab is a national resource and a collaboration between four universities: Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University and Uppsala University. The center combines frontline technical expertise with advanced knowledge of translational medicine and molecular bioscience. Advanced Light Microscopy Guided laboratory tour: 9:00 & 13:00 Meeting point A The microscopy techniques developed by the three winners of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2014 is the corner stone at the Advanced Light Microscopy, ALM. SciLifeLab is the only lab in Sweden where both techniques (STED and PALM) are available. These are used to look at cells at the nano scale. For example Hjalmar Brismar s research group tries to understand the many functional aspects of Na/K-ATPase, the salt pump that is the major determinant of intracellular ion homeostasis and which has recently been shown to also function as a signal transducer. Clinical Genomics Guided laboratory tour: 9:30 & 13:00 Meeting point C Thanks to new technologies sequencing of a whole human genome can now be done in just three days. The Clinical Genomics facility provides infrastructure for such sequencing and serves as a competence center assisting the translation of genomics-based tools to routine clinical care. All projects at the facility are carried out in close collaboration with medical expertise provided by the clinical diagnostic laboratories and physicians at the Karolinska University Hospital. Eukaryotic Single Cell Genomics Guided laboratory tour: 10:00, 12:30 & 15:30 Meeting point A Single cell analysis is an emerging technology that allows for the exploration of the genes and proteins of individual cells. Together with Microbial Single Cell Genomics and Single cell Proteomics in Uppsala the Eukaryotic Single Cell Genomics facility comprises the largest platform for single cell analysis in Europe. The facility offers streamlined single-cell RNA sequencing as well as whole genome DNA amplification to the scientific community in Sweden and beyond. Affinity Proteomics Guided laboratory tour: 10:00, 10:30, 11:00 & 11:30 Meeting point B Affinity Proteomics offer antibody-based protein analysis and imaging and is closely involved in the work with the Human Protein Atlas, HPA. The facility can investigate in what tissues and body fluids certain proteins are expressed, how they interact with each other and bind to other molecules. These analyses are important for understanding biological processes and diseases, as well as for identifying new drug targets and diagnostic markers. Bioinformatics Exhibition: 11:00-13:00 Delta area The bioinformatics platform provides custom-tailored support beyond the predefined analyses typically offered by the data-generating platforms at SciLifeLab. We offer both short and long-term support to Swedish research groups. The bioinformatics platform also provides computing and storage resources for large-scale biological data in collaboration with the SNIC supercomputer centres. Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy Guided laboratory tour: 11:30 & 15:30 Meeting point C Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy (FCS) measures concentrations and sizes of biomolecules as well as interactions between biomolecules, in solution or in living cells. The facility offers access to the latest developments in FCS and related techniques as well as support in the design and planning of experiments. Researchers employing the facility also get help with performing measurements and interpreting and analyzing experimental data. Projects are usually carried out as scientific collaborations between the respective research groups and the facility. Medicinal Chemistry - Hit 2 Lead Exhibition: 10:00-11:30 & 13:00-14:30 Delta area The Medicinal Chemistry - Hit2Lead facility is part of the platform for Drug Discovery and Development at SciLifeLab. Within Medicinal Chemistry the aim is to have dedicated scientists working together with differ-
4 ent academic groups to identify lead compounds with a promising profile for proof-of-concept animal studies. The facility work closely together with Medicinal Chemistry Lead Identification in Uppsala and identifies promising early small molecule leads for further optimization to possible drugs. Initial chemical hits can be obtained from high-throughput screening (HTS) capabilities available at CBCS, through fragment-based drug discovery (FBDD) technologies, as well as through rational drug design. big data, combined with state-of-the-art techniques used in modern high throughput molecular biology and how to translate biological findings into diagnostic tools and novel treatments. NGI Stockholm Presentation: 9:00 & 13:00 Air/Fire lecture room Exhibition: 10:00-10:30, 11:00-13:00 & 14:00-14:30 Delta area Guided laboratory tour: 9:30, 10:30, 13:30 & 14:30 Meeting point A The Genomics facilities for genomics production and applications offer state-of-the-art service in the rapidly developing field of massively parallel DNA sequencing (MPS). The facilities collaborate with researchers all over Sweden and have extensive experience with a wide range of sequencing applications and protocols. They perform high-throughput sequencing followed by data processing and best practice bioinformatics analyses. Automated protocols allow us to process hundreds of samples per week and produce high quality sequencing data. Protein Science Facility Presentation: 13:30 Air/Fire lecture room The Protein Science Facility (PSF) provides recombinant protein production services using high throughput methods. The facility is focused on His-tagged proteins produced in E. coli and carry out sub-cloning, small-scale expression tests, litre-scale production cultures and a semi-automated two-step protein purification, but also works with tailor made protocols. In addition PSF also provides training and access to instrumentation for high throughput crystallography and biophysical characterization. Master s programme Presentation: 14:00 Air/Fire lecture room The Master s programme in Molecular Techniques in Life Science is a unique collaboration between Stockholm s top universities; Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Stockholm University, in the environment of SciLifeLab (Science for Life Laboratory). The students receive a comprehensive education in life science emphasizing cutting-edge methods in bioinformatic analysis of
