1 Government College University Lahore GCU Prospectus 07 Institute of Industrial Biotechnology (IIB) Introduction The st century is envisioned as an era of Biotechnology and Applied. Remarkable achievements have been made in the eld of science, in general and life sciences in particular, during recent decades. The impact of these developments on improving the quality of life is obvious. Consumption of biotech products including conventional biotechnology and recombinant DNA products has exceeded Rs. 9. billion in 006 and reached more than Rs. 78. billion in 07. The main contributors are the fermentation-based products e.g. Vaccines, Biopolymers, Antibiotics, Alcohol, Organic Acids, Enzymes, Amino Acids, Baker's yeast, etc. In near future, fermentation based products and services would remain important contributors to biotech products scenario. Realizing the immense economic potential, Institute of Industrial Biotechnology (IIB) was set up in 005 at GC University Lahore by a grant of Rs Million from Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan. IIB is a vibrant and ambitious institute. The Institute has gained a very good repute in the University and the society due to its strong commitment to excellence both in research and teaching during the last twelve years. The aim of IIB is to develop indigenous manpower of experts in and Biotechnology. This has increased employment opportunities for quali ed students both in industrial research and development markets. The manpower will be highly instrumental in developing in-house technologies for the production of various industrial products at National and International level. The Institute has adopted an integrated approach embracing the view that tomorrow's breakthroughs are likely to occur at the interface of traditional and advanced biological subdivisions. The aim is well served by the amalgamation of all the related disciplines of and Biotechnology. The learning process at IIB comprises of a combination of lectures (theory & practical), seminars/presentations, research projects, internships in various Industries, industrial study tours, self directed readings and independent studies. The Mission statement of IIB: Initiate enthusiastic endeavors to establish strong foundation for pursuing excellence in the rapidly advancing integrated elds of Biotechnology and. Academic Programmes a) Biotechnology Ÿ BSc (Hons) Ÿ MPhil Ÿ PhD b) Ÿ BSc (Hons) Ÿ MPhil Ÿ The course contents of the programmes related to and Biotechnology are prepared according to the guidelines provided by HEC Pakistan, QEC and APEL of GCU, Lahore. Ÿ The Curriculum Committee updates/revises the curricula regularly (yearly) on the basis of latest trends and developments, and feedback from the concerned teachers and students. Ÿ The courses are then approved by the concerned Board of Studies in and Biotechnology which consists of renowned Scientists, Academicians and Industrialists from all over the country. Ÿ In 04, IIB faculty comprehensively reviewed and revised course contents of all programmes, some new courses were introduced in BSc (Hons.) and MPhil schemes of study. These revised curricula were approved by Academic Council and Syndicate of GCU Lahore in 05. Curriculum Booklets of BSc (Hons.) Biotechnology and were prepared and are available for students. Research Areas / Strength The IIB has established Research in following areas: a) Research Areas Ÿ Bioenergy Ÿ Bioprocessing Ÿ Enzymology Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ b) Research Strength IIB has been able to develop the infrastructure for performing lab and pilot scale projects in a very short span of time. The students and young faculty members are the main strengths who are further guided by environment scientists and researchers. The industrialization of Biotechnology for the biosynthesis of products is based on bioprocesses by making use of indigenous resources (agro-industrial). These include organic acids, biofuels, enzymes and antibiotics. Some of these projects were funded by Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF), Ministry of Science and (MOST), Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC). Facilities Highly quali ed and experienced teaching faculty is present to instruct and supervise students in the elds of and Biotechnology. All the faculty members are engaged in R&D activities in addition to teaching and other activities. The research is focused on various disciplines of and Biotechnology particularly Fermentation, Enzymology, Bioprocessing,, Bioenergy, Protein Puri cation and. Besides six lecture rooms, one conference room and one committee room, there are three General Labs and six Research Labs in the Institute. Another Lab is available for Autoclaving and Sterilization Chambers. Incubators, Ovens and Ice Cold Machine are also available. All the equipment and facilities at IIB are available to students and researchers of IIB. Students from other universities and organizations also bene t from these facilities. A Life Sciences Library has been established in IIB which has a collection of more than 0,000 books related to various elds of and Biotechnology. A number of reference books are also available. Wi-Fi internet facility is available for students, researchers and faculty in the Institute. Facilities and resources available at present include following equipment: Ÿ Stirred Fermentors ( L, 7.5 L, 5 L & 0 L) Ÿ Temperature Controlled Rotary Shaking Incubators Ÿ High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) System Ÿ Sacchari cation vessel (50 L) Ÿ Storage Tanks (00 L) Ÿ Scanning Spectrophotometer (UV/Vis double Beam Scanning System) Ÿ Gel Electrophoresis & Documentation System (Gel-Doc) Ÿ Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE) System Ÿ Thermocycler (PCR machine) Ÿ Ultra Heat Sonicator Ÿ Freeze Dryer Ÿ Low Pressure Chromatography Ÿ Multiporator Ÿ Cool Lab Ÿ Growth Chambers (Bacteria & Fungi) Ÿ Temperature Controlled High Speed Centrifuges Ÿ Basket Centrifuge Ÿ Rotary Vacuum Filter Ÿ SpeedVac Concentrator Ÿ Spray Dryer Ÿ Laminar Air Flow Cabinets Ÿ Rotary Vacuum Concentrator Ÿ Ultra Freezers ( 80ºC), etc Website: registrar@gcu.edu.pk 7
