1 IT Services s: EMEA, 2001 Market Analysis Abstract: IT services market revenue in Europe, the Middle East and Africa reached $162.8 billion in IBM retained the top spot with 7 percent share of the market. By Robert De Souza and Dean Blackmore Strategic Market Statements In 2001, the IT services market in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) reached $162.8 billion. IBM achieved the largest share of the 2001 EMEA IT services market (7 percent), followed by EDS and Cap Gemini Ernst & Young. The top 10 vendors in the EMEA IT services market accounted for 28 percent of the market in 2001, a similar figure to their share in Publication Date: 24 December 2002
2 2 IT Services s: EMEA, 2001 EMEA IT Services Market in 2001 Definitions and Methodology Due to tumultuous global economic and political forces, 2001 was a testing and difficult year for the majority of IT services vendors. The United States suffered a significant recession, particularly in the IT and manufacturing sectors, which had profound effects on vendors and investors, and is likely to influence the economy's trajectory for some time to come. Economic uncertainty in the United States led to caution in other regional markets. The events of Sept. 11 further postponed an economic recovery, causing further harm to the IT services market. Double-digit growth for IT services, which was the norm only two years ago, evaporated. For IT services market definitions, please see "IT Services Market Definitions Guide" (ITSV-WW-GU-0004). Gartner Dataquest annually surveys the revenues of over 400 IT services companies across a variety of market segments, regions, countries and vertical industries. These 400 companies represent approximately 66 percent of the total IT services market. s Tables 1 to 3 show the following details for 2001: Top 10 IT services vendors in EMEA Top 10 professional services vendors in EMEA; this includes consulting, development and integration, IT management and process management Top 10 product support vendors in EMEA, which includes hardware and software maintenance and support All rankings are based on 2001 revenues. The Gartner Dataquest MarketView publication "IT Services Europe Final Database" (ITSV-EU-DB- DATA) provides revenue data for a longer list of vendors, as well as allowing analysis of the data by segment, country, environment or region. Various MarketView databases are now available to subscribers to Gartner Dataquest's IT Services Clusters. In 2001, IBM remained the dominant IT services vendor in EMEA, with a market share of 7.0 percent. Of the top 10 vendors, six grew faster than the overall EMEA market rate of 6.9 percent. These were IBM, EDS, Accenture, Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC), Atos Origin and Hewlett-Packard (HP). In EMEA, the top 10 vendors made up 28 percent of the total market. Among the top 10, EDS gained most market share in 2001, with an annual growth rate of 17.1 percent.

Once again, IBM was the number-one vendor, with 7.8 percent market share in In this segment, half of the top 10 vendors grew faster that the market. These were IBM, EDS, Accenture, CSC and Atos Origin. Of these, EDS gained the most market share in 2001, with an annual growth rate of 17.5 percent. In this segment, Compaq took first place, with IBM in number-two position. The acquisition of Compaq by HP will further consolidate the new company as the leading product-support vendor in EMEA. Only four vendors from the top 10 grew faster than the market average of 4.9 percent: Compaq, HP, SAP and Sun Microsystems. SAP grew at an impressive 35.7 percent annual growth rate.

The total market for IT services in EMEA grew by 6.9 percent in 2001, compared with a forecast growth rate of 2.6 percent in While discrete spending was reduced in 2001 thus reducing growth rates it seems that, for 2002, discrete budgets will be reduced even further in EMEA. The focus for vendors will continue to be the reduction of cost through downsizing, mergers and acquisitions. This will enable vendors to increase margins and profits and maintain their all-important stock price. Gaining market share will not be as important until the market shows more promising growth in late Related Documents For a more detailed view of the EMEA IT services market, please see "IT Services Europe Final Database" (ITSV-EU-DB-DATA), which provides vendor revenue, market share and end-user market size by EMEA regions and countries. Segments include IT services by service line, by computing segment and environments, and by vertical market. Key Issue What is the market size for the IT service market?
