Context The call implements the QT Flagship announced by the Commission in its 2016 Communication on the European Cloud Initiative The call follows the strategy (Strategic Research Agenda) defined by the QT-Flagship High Level Steering Committee's Report (2016/17) QuantERA complements the activities of the call
FETFLAG : FET Flagship on Quantum Technologies 23
Ramp-up Phase During the current QT-Flagship's ramp-up phase, the Specific Challenge is: to build a strongly networked European Quantum Technologies (QT) community around the common goals defined in the Strategic Research Agenda to deliver the knowledge, technologies and open research infrastructures and testbeds necessary for the development of a worldleading knowledge-based industry in Europe to move advanced quantum technologies from the laboratory to industry with concrete prototype applications to advance the fundamental science basis
FETFLAG RIA Scope: Proposals should move technology up the TRL scale. For areas a)-d), proposals can integrate various activities covering the whole value chain, from fundamental to applied research, and with other types of activity, including demonstrators, etc., as appropriate. Proposals for areas a)-c) should include benchmarking with respect to relevant targets set by the CSA in this area. Area e): R&D of basic theories and components, addressing foundational challenges relevant for the development of QT in at least one of areas a)-d). Type of action: Research and Innovation Action EU contribution: up to EUR 10 million (a-d), EUR 2-3million (e) Call deadline: 20/02/2018 Call budget: EUR 130 million
FETFLAG RIA a. Quantum Communication Development of state-of-the art network devices, applications and systems (memories, quantum repeaters, network equipment, high throughput miniaturised quantum random number generators, etc.) for quantum communication mesh-networks. Proposals should target cost-effective solutions, devices and systems compatible with existing communication networks and standard cryptography systems, as well as device-independent protocols. Each proposal should address aspects like engineering, protocols, certification, software, algorithms. Actions should include validation of the proposed solution, proof of its suitability for the targeted application and benchmarking with respect to relevant targets set by the CSA.
FETFLAG RIA b. Quantum Computing Systems The development of open quantum computer experimental systems and platforms, integrating the key building blocks such as quantum processors (>10qubits) with limited qubit overhead, control electronics, software stack, algorithms, applications, etc. Work should address the scalability towards large systems (>100 qubits), the verification and validation of the quantum computation, fault-tolerance and solving a concrete computational problem to demonstrate the quantum advantage. Projects should foresee benchmarking activities. Benchmarks will be identified by the CSA for all the platforms selected in this area.
FETFLAG RIA c. Quantum Simulation Proposals should aim at delivering operational demonstrators, based on existing physical platforms that have shown a clear perspective to achieve more than 50 interacting quantum units and / or full local control. They should work towards demonstrating a certified quantum advantage for solving difficult scientific or industrial problems (e.g. material design, logistics, scheduling, machine learning, optimisation, artificial intelligence, drug discovery, etc.). The proposed solutions need to include the development of protocols, validation schemes and control, simulation software, system configuration and optimisation. Work should address the scalability towards larger systems with more qubits. Hybrid architectures are also to be considered under this area when relevant. 30 FETFLAG RIA e. Fundamental Science Research and development of basic theories and components, addressing a foundational challenge of relevance for the development of quantum technologies in at least one of the mentioned four areas a.-d., to improve the performance of the components or subsystems targeted in those areas. Proposals must clearly indicate how they support a challenge for one or more of these areas.
FETFLAG RIA Expected Impact: Contribute to the strategic objectives of the Flagship; Expand European leadership and excellence in quantum technologies; Scientific breakthroughs that form the basis for future technologies; Synergetic collaboration with existing European platforms and infrastructures; Kick-start a competitive European quantum industry; Availability of open platforms and infrastructures accessible to the European Quantum technologies Community.
FETFLAG CSA Scope: Proposals should aim at coordinating the relevant stakeholders, notably academia, RTOs and industry participating in the Flagship initiative promote the objectives of the Flagship and monitor the progress, support the governance structure, organize outreach events (including addressing the impact of technology development on economy and society), The action will also identify, together with the community, benchmarks for all communication/computing/simulation platforms selected Type of action: Coordination and Support Action EU contribution: up to EUR 2 million Call deadline: 20/02/2018 Call budget: EUR 2 million
FETFLAG CSA Expected Impact: A well-coordinated European initiative on Quantum Technologies, involving all relevant stakeholders and linked with relevant international, national and regional programmes, while assuring an efficient support to the governance of the Flagship; Spreading of excellence on Quantum Technologies across Europe, increased awareness of European activities and availability of European curricula in the field.
SU-ICT RIA Quantum Key Distribution testbed Specific Challenge: Europe's economic activities and Europe's single market is dependent on well-functioning underlying digital infrastructures, services and data integrity, not the least for critical infrastructures like energy, transport, health, finance, etc. Current security of the digital infrastructures and services will soon be under threat of no longer providing long-term security. Confidentiality of data and communications, authentication, as well as the long-term integrity of stored data have to be guaranteed, even in the advent of quantum computers. Introducing Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) in the underlying infrastructure has the potential to maintain end-to-end security in the long-term.
SU-ICT RIA Quantum Key Distribution testbed Scope: Building an experimental platform to test and validate the concept of end-to-end security, providing quantum key distribution as a service. Proposals should develop an open, robust, reliable and fully monitored metropolitan area testbed network (ring or mesh configuration). The aim is to integrate equipment, components, protocols and network technologies with QKD systems and current digital security and communication networks The proposed solutions should demonstrate resistance against known hacking techniques, including quantum hacking techniques. The testbed should make use as much as possible of existing network infrastructure (fibres and/or satellites) The proposed testbed should demonstrate different applications and use cases of QKD (including for authentication), optimizing end-to-end security rather than the security of individual elements.
SU-ICT RIA Quantum Key Distribution testbed Proposals should include an assessment of the applications and parts of the infrastructure for which the integration of QKD is economically justified, as well as an assessment of the minimal acceptable key rate for each application and its total cost of ownership. Proposals should bring together relevant stakeholders such as telecommunication equipment manufacturers, users, network operators, QKD equipment providers, digital security professionals and scientists. Type of action: Innovation Action EU contribution: up to EUR 15 million Call deadline: 28/08/2018 Call budget: EUR 15 million
