2 Canon Corporate History A History of Innovation Early Beginnings of Canon The history of Canon started with an enterprising spirit to make the world's best camera. 1933: Precision Optical Instruments is established; Kwanon camera prototype is developed. 1937: Canon is founded as a small camera company (Precision Optical Industry Co., Ltd.). 1941: Japan's first indirect X-ray camera is introduced. 1955: Canon opens its U.S. office in New York City. An Era of Diversification Canon adds electrical, physical and chemical technologies to its optical and precision technologies. 1964: Canon introduces the world's first 10-key electronic calculator. 1968: Canon enters the plain-paper copier (PPC) market with the NP Copier system. 1976: The AE-1 SLR, world's first SLR camera with a built-in microcomputer is introduced Establishment of the Global Corporation Plan and KYOSEI Canon embarks an ambitious strategy to transform into an "excellent global company" which started the innovations that characterize Canon today. 1982: The PC-10/20, the world's first personal copying machine with an all-in-one cartridge system is introduced 1985: The BJ-80, the world's first inkjet printer using Bubble Jet technology is introduced 1987: Canon s CLC-1 digital full-color copying machine is introduced 1992: The GP55, a digital copying machine combining superior image quality with network compatibility, is introduced. 1999: The imagerunner brand credited with transforming and accelerating the digital office equipment is introduced. 2003: Canon MEAP is introduced first embedded application development platform for MFPs is introduced. 2007: Canon imagepress is introduced representing Canon s largest R&D investment in print engine development. 2009: Canon announces the acquisition of Oce` 2013: Canon USA moves to it s new headquarters in Melville, New York
