2 Course Description: This course provides the learner with an overview of the role that networked technologies and information systems play in business operations in the early 21st Century. Material is presented in the context of ICT and web-based, architecture and e-commerce. The basic structure and internal functions of business will be reviewed, followed by an examination of the development of business systems and their integration namely enterprise resource planning systems (ERP), customer relationship management systems (CRM), supply chain management systems (SCM) and business intelligence ( BI) and the role these systems play in supporting business functions and management decision making. Security and controls on the internet will be discussed. These concepts will be applied through assessment of team-driven case studies in-class and the written analysis of a business case for a real life company marketing a product or service. Course Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course the learner will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:. 1. Describe the roles and importance of software systems ERPs, CRMs, SCM & BI, in modern business enterprise.. 2. Discuss marketing processes and consumer behavior and the development and promotion of products and services. 3. Discuss information communication technology ( ICT) infrastructure in relation to business functions 4. Discuss and identify key components of information and its dissemination for management decision making 5. Describe the web-based architecture and discuss the role of information system control & security procedures in conducting business using the internet 6. Describe how a small business can establish an e-commerce presence 7. Analyze contemporary business case studies, applying concepts learned from this course to consider the benefits derived from information technology solutions. 8. Demonstrate key employability skills of time management, team work, problem definition and analysis, and communication through group exercises both supervised (in-class) and externally (group project work). In exceptional and well documented circumstances (e.g. unexpected family problems, serious illness, or death of a close family member), students should be able to write a make-up examination to replace an examination missed. Grading and Evaluation: In-Class Group Assignments* 25% Mid-Term Exam 20% Business Case Term Project (Group) ** 25% Final Exam 30% Total 100% * In Class Assignments (25% - ( 6 episodes)) Six classes will include in-class group ( one hour session) work that will be collected at the end of class. Marks for these assignments will be averaged to a grade out of 25. Students absent from class for projects will receive a zero grade for work assigned and due in-class on that day. ** Business Case Project (Group, 25%) Students will work in groups of 4-5, as assigned by the instructor, on an analysis of a real business case. Topics discussed in class week by week will be directly related to the business case analysis. The analysis will be handed in on paper, with proper academic essay formatting. Marks will be deducted for poor research and improper referencing, grammar, and spelling. Guidelines for the project will be written up and distributed The grade for this work will be evaluated using the peer evaluation method. This means that each student WILL provide feedback to their group members and that feedback WILL have an impact on their final grade. 4 POLICY STATEMENTS College Policies The following statements are selected from Centennial College policies approved by the Board of Governors. Student Responsibilities Students are expected to know the contents of the course outline and to discuss with the professor any areas where clarification is required. The Academic Appeal Application form is available from any Enrolment Services Office. Proof of Student Status Students must produce official photo identification at any time during the semester when requested to do so by any professor. (The official piece is the Centennial Student Card.) Continuing Education students do not have Centennial Student Cards, and so they may use other forms of photo identification, such as a driver s license, health card, or other government-issued photo identification. Final Examinations When writing a test or examination, students must put their official photo-id cards in full view for review by the invigilator. Students who do not have official photo-id will be permitted to write the examination with a substitute photo-id, but they will be required to produce photo-id at the program or department office within 24 hours or the next business day following the examination, or else the examination results will be void.
