3 What you need to know Lighting design ensures safety of both the players and spectators in any sports application, while also providing a pleasant environment for your sporting event. Here are some guidelines in designing a playable field: Footcandle the standard unit of light measurement averages are critical because: When they are too low, the ball becomes hard to see. If the lighting isn t uniform, the ball will appear to jump or hop Other critical factors of lighting design in sports applications are: The number of poles and their height above the playing surface Light and lamp source Need for spill and glare control Making sure the lighting delivers as promised Hubbell Lighting s Sportsliter Solutions can help you address all of these important issues. A1 A B B C BASEBALL / SOFTBALL These aerial sports C2 require uniformity and high levels of illumination. Multiple poles light the ball from multiple sides for optimum visibility. Avoid the common mistake of lighting from the foul lines only. This can create an unsafe situation since the area of the ball facing the outfielders is not properly lit. Proper pole locations also reduce glare. Pole heights are determined by a simple formula, allowing for uniform illumination and the reduction of spill and glare to the players, spectators and neighbors. FOOTBALL / SOCCER Football and Soccer are both aerial and ground sports. Proper footcandle averages and uniformities are critical for safe play. Pole locations vary from four to eight and are located parallel with the sidelines for football and soccer, however soccer poles can also be located off the corners of the field illuminating the ball facing the goalie. Pole heights, as in baseball/ softball, are calculated by using a simple formula. Pole quantity varies by installation depending on setbacks (how close they are to the field). Class of play and facilities The traditional way of classifying sports as amateur and professional is no longer meaningful. Modern practices frequently allow amateurs and professionals to compete against each other, such as in golf tournaments and tennis matches. Furthermore, amateur basketball and football are now played in the same facilities and at practically the same level as professional sports. In general, as the skill level is elevated, players and spectators require a better and more sophisticated luminous environment. A correlation exists between the size of a facility and the level of play, e.g., a higher skill level attracts a greater number of spectators. As the number of spectators increases, their distance from the playing surface increases and their need for increased illuminance to see players and tasks requires the values to increase. Accordingly, facilities should be designed to satisfy the most talented players and accommodate the greatest potential spectator capacity. In TENNIS Tennis courts are lit with either floodlights or what is commonly called shoe box luminaires. Poles are located along the length of the courts and are much lower in heights than football or baseball installations. Shoe box luminaires offer a true 90 degree cutoff (no light goes upward into the atmosphere), greatly reducing the amount of spill light beyond the court surface. OTHER SPORTING EVENTS Other sports like lacrosse, field hockey, track, and golf courses can be lit in the same basic way with care for the comfort and performance of the players, spectators and neighbors. GUIDELINES Recommended footcandle averages are published by the IESNA (Illuminating Engineering Society of North America) and should be followed in any specification. Some sporting organizations have their own lighting requirements and should be consulted. THE LAMP OF CHOICE for sports lighting is Metal Halide. This lamp gives off white light and has excellent color rendering properties. For optimum maintenance look for systems that use off-theshelf lamps and not proprietary lamped systems. POLES There are a number of pole styles available. The most common are galvanized steel in either concrete encased or anchor base styles. Both are excellent choices for sports lighting applications. Centrifugally spun concrete poles are another option. All Hubbell poles are designed to stringent AASHTO structural standards. ENVIRONMENTAL LIGHTING REQUIREMENTS There is a growing list of cities, towns and municipalities that have specific spill and glare control footcandle lighting requirements. Before proceeding, you ll need to research local codes to see if environmental lighting is required. If not, you will have to make a decision based upon the proximity of dwellings are or even businesses which may be affected by unwanted stray light. Also, how close are your fields to a freeway, major roadway or even a secondary street where unwanted light could cause problems. Sportsliter Solutions offers different methods to control this unwanted light. large facilities seating over 10,000 spectators, the lighting criteria is usually governed by the needs of television. To determine illumination criteria, are classified facilities into four groups based on the skill level of the players and the anticipated number of spectators. CLASS I Competition play before a large group (00 or more spectators). However, for the purpose of this practice, illumination criteria for individual sports are limited to a spectator capacity of 10,000 or less. Lighting criteria for major stadiums and arenas require special design considerations such as vertical and horizontal illuminance values not covered by this practice, which may be defined by individual sports and/or broadcasting organizations. CLASS II Competition play with facilities for up to 5,000 spectators. CLASS III Competition play with some spectator facilities. CLASS IV Competition or recreational play only. 5 YOUTH / PARKS & RECREATION How to light your field Lighting your local parks and recreation ballfield can be a very rewarding experience. Proper selection of an architect / engineering firm, lighting levels (footcandles), lamp source, equipment and installer is vital to this process. Whether it is an aerial or ground level sport, proper illumination is critical for safety and playability. Listed below are some recommended illumination levels for different sports and class of play (see page 3 for comprehensive class of play definitions). 6 YOUTH / PARKS & RECREATION Steps to follow STEP 1 Determine the sport, class of play (see page 3) and footcandle/uniformity requirements from table I. STEP 2 Select the optics (see page ). Be sure to research local municipal codes for spill / glare requirements to ensure you use the proper optics. STEP 3 Select the lamp source and wattage. The lamp source for sports lighting venues is Metal Halide. For most sporting events, 10W is the desired wattage since fewer fixtures are required. However, for outdoor tennis courts or indoor sporting events, 1000W may be a better choice. Lamp life for 1000W is 12,000 hours whereas 10W is 3,000 hours. STEP 4 Select the system: Remote ballast pre-wired and pre-aimed (page 14), integral ballasted pre-wired (page 16) or individual Sportsliter luminaires. Remote systems usually are wired and preaimed and can save installation time and costs. Integral ballasted systems are pre-wired and the luminaires are field aimed for greater accuracy to the lighting design. Integral luminaires are mounted to existing poles or poles supplied by the end user and require aiming and wiring in the field. Retrofitting these luminaires on existing poles saves money simply by not adding the extra costs associated with poles. Note, it is the responsibility of the end user to ensure the poles will handle the total weights and EPA (effective projected areas) of the luminaires used. STEP 5 Select the pole type (page ). Galvanized steel poles are the most common in sports lighting applications with concrete a very good option. STEP 6 Contact a local architect/engineering firm with experience writing product and performance specifications for sport fields. 6

12 SCHOLASTIC & INTRAMURAL How to light your field Scholastic fields can be and are the pride of communities. Each one has its own Steps to follow STEP 1 Determine the sport, class of play (see page 3) and footcandle / uniformity set of parameters and no two fields are exactly alike. When decisions are made to light them, proper care should be taken to ensure you have the showcase you want. Specific average maintained illumination levels are required and should be researched either through local ordinances, scholastic organizations or the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) Recommended Practice for Sports and Recreation Area Lighting, RP-6-01 manual. requirements listed in table II. STEP 2 Select the optics (see page ). Be sure to research local municipal codes for spill/glare requirements to ensure you use the proper optics. STEP 3 Select the lamp source and wattage. However, for outdoor tennis courts or indoor sporting events, 1000W may be a better choice. Lamp life for 1000W Intramural sports for collegiate or even at the scholastic level again pose their own set of needs. Typically, intramural fields are large open areas that have many sporting fields located inside the perimeter. Care should be taken so the area does not get too large, to avoid the added costs of extremely tall poles. They are usually lit to one overall average maintained footcandle level and can vary in average intensity. Local schools and colleges should work with architects and engineers or lighting manufacturers to establish these levels. is 12,000 hours whereas 10W is 3,000 hours. STEP 4 Select the system. 13 PLAYING LIKE THE PROS How to light your field Stadiums and arenas have been built in most major market areas for the professional baseball, basketball, football, soccer and other professional sport teams for community and national leisure and entertainment. Lighting these venues is different than recreational and scholastic fields in that the main focus of lighting is vertical footcandles rather than horizontal. Television cameras must be able to sense light reflecting off the vertical surface of whatever is on the field of play so the images can be properly transmitted to the viewers at home. These vertical footcandles must be uniform and of sufficient level (usually in the 1+ range) so the cameras work without constant adjustment when broadcasting from one area of the field to another. Some television networks have minimum lighting standards that must be followed. So how do you ensure proper lighting on your field? Collegiate and professional stadium and arena specifications are best left up to reputable architects and engineers who specialize in this type of design and build work. These firms are well versed in how to write the proper specification for television coverage and with the actual structural requirements of the stadium itself. 20 POLES: GALVANIZED STEEL OR PRESTRESSED CONCRETE Steel shaft slip-fit poles EASILY ASSEMBLED Our steel poles are designed with slip-fit connections to eliminate technical problems in the pole-to-base transition: No critical weld joints No galvanizing problems from material or thickness change No ledges to collect water Less bulky than concrete, steel poles are up to two times smaller in diameter and seven to ten times lighter, making them easier to handle and erect. GALVANIZED STEEL COMBINES GOOD LOOKS AND EASE OF INSTALLATION CONCRETE POLES ARE A LOW MAINTENANCE, HIGH STRENGTH CHOICE CONCRETE ENCASED STEEL Installation of Concrete Encased Steel is simple and cost effective. The lower shaft can be installed in the foundation and aligned by simply moving it into place by hand. Back fill with pre-determined material per foundation design, let set and then install the upper section. Quick, simple, easy and cost effective. Lower weight, lower shipping costs, easy to install. Concrete Encased poles have a proven durability record with over years of history. Each pole is hot-dip galvanized inside and out. Plus, from 6 above the ground line to the bottom of the pole, we double-protect with Black Asphaltum corrosion-resistant coating. Black Asphaltum is a coating designed for general industrial use where a highly protective acid and alkali resistant coating is desired. Once applied, it is a dependable barrier between the activity of modern life and the environment. It has excellent chemical resistance to highway and industrial chemicals such as calcium chloride, sodium chloride and trisodium phosphate. Black Asphaltum has excellent rust proofing properties and when applied over the galvanized finish offers double protection for the steel pole for a long and trouble free installation. The coatings may be sprayed, brushed or dipped for excellent adhesion and wear resistance. Minimum thickness after drying is mils. Black Asphaltum meets performance requirements of TT-V-F, varnish: asphault. It is free of lead and chromate hazards. ANCHOR BASE STEEL All the advantage of steel poles, lightweight, strong, long life but with a traditional anchor base mounting style. Hot-dipped galvanized inside and out for long, trouble-free operation. Each section is pre-fitted at the factory before shipment to job site. Pole accessories Flood brackets Extra hand holes Couplings Lightning rods Duplex frames OUR ANCHOR BOLT SYSTEM IS THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR ALL APPLICATIONS BLACK ASPHALT PROTECTION STEEL ANCHOR BOLT CONCRETE ENCASED CONCRETE Caged poles Steel or concrete poles are available with cages, steps and safety cables. When required, each pole is designed to handle the luminaire loads per published wind zones of the location. Prestressed concrete poles HIGHLY DURABLE Our prestressed concrete poles are centrifugally spun, making them exceedingly strong and impervious to moisture. They resist corrosion, won t warp or twist with age, and have a service life up to years. Lighter in weight than static cast concrete, they feature a slim, aesthetically pleasing design. EASILY INSTALLED Prestressed concrete poles are usually direct burial, which eliminates the cost and time delays of setting anchor base footings. 23 DARK SKIES What you need to know about Unwanted off-site light has been a problem for many years in communities around the world. There are generally three categories associated with this situation: LIGHT POLLUTION (light trespass, spill light) is the amount of light outside the playing area. This light is measurable and should be measured in both horizontal and vertical planes. The ideal location is at the property line of the sports lighting installation. Each test point should be listed as a maximum footcandle level, not just pointing the test meter back toward the field. GLARE is a very subjective term. It relates principally to the direct view of the floodlights. In most cases, it will be only a nuisance, but without proper shielding of the optic, it can become distracting. Shielding of the main beam and lamp will greatly reduce this situation. SKY GLOW is a term for halo effe ct. It comes from upwardly directed light causing a glow in the sky. In sports lighting, this should not be totally eliminated when dealing with an aerial sports application such as baseball. It can be reduced greatly by incorporating internal and external louver/visor control. Hubbell SLS SG and SG-V2 optics are designed to restrict unwanted upward light, spill light outside the sports installation and unnecessary glare, both on and off the field. By mounting the lamp horizontally to the parabolic reflector, it is located deep inside the reflector shape, therefore allowing for better concealment, reducing spill and glare.

27 SLS/STERNER PARA II ARENA LUMINAIRE The Para II makes it easy to meet arena design off performance The Para II luminaire was designed specifically for interior sports lighting applications, utilizing a beam pattern engineered for efficiency, glare control and uniformity. In fact, the product derives its name, Para II, from a unique combination of two separate parabolas. This is an illumination system so unique and so advanced in its control of light that it was patented. The beam pattern provides a narrow vertical beam to minimize unwanted spill light on the scoreboard while providing a wide horizontal beam so the entire playing surface can be evenly illuminated from catwalk systems located on either side of the playing surface. This unique beam pattern eliminates the need for placing supplemental lighting in the glare zones on the ends of the catwalks. Motorized shade Motorized shade option provides a time-tested, reliable method for providing instant on/off capabilities including, theatrical effects for player introductions, half time shows, special effects and other scenarios. SHADE FULLY OPEN Mounting SHADE IN MOTION SHADE FULLY CLOSED Patented catwalk mounting system Heavy-duty yoke with mounting system that locks aiming into place Horizontal and vertical protractors for easy aiming Tool-free rear access for relamping leaves aiming angles undisturbed and maintenance personnel safely on the catwalk Can be double stacked with other arena luminaires when space is limited As the game races across the playing surface, spectators follow the action while broadcast directors switch camera angles and view points for the home viewing audience. Providing effective lighting for such dynamic, fast paced action need not be as challenging as the game itself. That s why SLS/Sterner has created a simple yet exacting arena lighting system that surpasses all arena design considerations and is compliant wit professional basketball specifications. The arena lighting system exceeds: Television broadcast requirements for multiple camera locations Illumination criteria of broadcast networks and professional sports organizations The uniformity gradient (measures the rate of change of light levels illuminance on the playing surface of adjacent measuring points) The coefficient of variance (measures the ratio of the standard deviation of all values to the mean value for light levels on the playing surface) All uniformity ratios, including maximum/minimum (measures the difference between the highest and lowest light levels on the playing surface) Spectator considerations Minimizes glare for players Minimizes glare for spectators Provides balanced illumination on the court with gradual decrease into seating area Provides balanced illumination on athletes and reduces shadows on playing surface Provides a system design where illumination does not impede the quality of the picture projected from the video scoreboard Theatrical considerations Motorized Shade Supplies an instant dark system for the sports lighting luminaire during pre-, mid- and post-game events
