40 Conclusions The CRL tunnels, consisting of TBM tunnels, mined SEM tunnels and deep shaft excavations, will be constructed within Auckland CBD, where mixed ground conditions, sensitive buildings/ structures, and clashes with existing utilities add significant complexity to the design and construction The most complex part of the project involves excavating cut and cover tunnels beneath the existing 100 year old heritage Central Post Office. Innovative design and construction techniques are required to deal with the complex constraints A robust tunnel design and construction arrangement to minimize the tunnelling risks have been considered and documented in the reference design stage to provide a sound technical basis for procurement of the detailed design and construction Contract 3
