The gluing operation Radio frequency heating is used to speed up curing of the glue, which is Dynea's melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) resin Prefere 4535 with hardener Prefere The same glue is used for both finger-jointing of the laminations as well as bonding of other glued wood products. Compared with other MUF glues, the Dynea glue used by Mosser allows for longer assembly times, shorter pressing times in the radio frequency press, and the glue spread can be kept lower (less waste). In finger jointing, the glue gives increased joint strength. The fact that Mosser needs just one glue for several bonding operations clearly offers a logistical advantage. The Prefere system is environmentally friendly. It is low in free formaldehyde, and the levels of formaldehyde in the completely cured products are at the same level as in un-glued spruce wood. The resin and hardener are applied separately to the glulam laminations using a Wash-Less ribbon spreader. 7 ...continuing Quality is the yardstick for everything ember manufacturers. The Wash-Less application system eliminates the daily cleaning and washing of the ribbon spreader heads. At the end of the working day, the resin and hardener application heads are simply submerged into sealed resin and hardener containers, respectively, and kept there until the next day. This prevents the adhesive and hardener from drying out in the nozzles, creating a wash-free system and getting rid of wash water waste problems. Most industrialised countries have implemented regulations for the glulam industry. The plants must have production equipment that meets certain requirements. The wood raw materials are required to be sorted by strength. Glues used in the glulam industry must successfully pass testing and receive an approval before the industry is allowed to use them. Such rules have no doubt contributed to maintaining a high and uniform quality of glulam. Dynea's glues have been certified for use by the glulam industry. Other glued wood products In addition to glulam, Mosser also produces other glued wood products, such as edge-glued panels, finger-jointed battens and door friezes. The edge-glued panels are used in furniture, floors, walls, ceilings and stairs; whereas the finger-jointed battens find their applications in base constructions of floor, wall and ceilings, and in wooden framework constructions. In edge-glued panels, strips of wood are glued together, counteracting warping tendencies. As opposed to glulam and edgeglued panels, the battens and the door friezes are glued with polyvinyl acetate glue. The glued wood products plant is downstream from a sawmill that has an annual capacity of 120,000 m 3 sawn timber. This guarantees maximum flexibility in production. A large proportion of Mosser's products is exported to customers all over the world. Additional services Mosser's business idea is to deliver not only high quality glued wood products, but also a broad range of additional services, such as cutting to size, cross-cutting and trenching, and impregnation. In addition to support from a competent sales team, the company offers technical application consultancy and structural engineering. Dynea and melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) glues for the glulam industry IN BRIEF Founded: 1924 Volume of sales: 105 million EUR Employees: 270 Export share: 75 % Markets: Europe, Asia Randegg, Austria ddyno, a predecessor of Dynea, is the innovator behind the light-coloured MUF systems for exterior grade structural glulam. The traditional phenol-resorcinol-formaldehyde (PRF) glues give dark-coloured glue lines which are often considered a drawback when light-coloured softwood species common in northern Europe are used for glulam. Therefore, there was growing demand for a glue which gave light-coloured glue lines, but had similar properties and performance as a PRF glue. It was a great triumph when in 1987 the company became the first glue manufacturer in the world to be granted approval for a powder MUF glue for exterior grade glulam. Mosser Leimholz GmbH was one of the first glulam producers to start using this glue that soon became popular throughout the industry. A liquid glue offers many advantages to customers compared to a powder glue, and in response to customers' wishes, Dynea's R&D lab developed a liquid equivalent. It was approved for exterior grade glulam in It quickly gained a significant market share. Dynea is committed to continually meet customers' needs, and so much effort has been put into further developing liquid MUF systems for glulam. The R&D work continued, and new, improved liquid glues were developed. Among the improved properties were shortened pressing time over previous systems, improved working environment, gluelines that remained light and good washdown properties. Today we talk about second, third and fourth generation liquid MUF glues. Our customers use different kinds of production equipment and need glues with somewhat different properties for optimal operation. Therefore, we are proud to say that Dynea offers the most complete range of products for glulam manufacture. Today, we offer three different liquid MUF systems for the glulam industry, enabling us to meet all of our customers' demands. However, this does not mean that we will rest on our laurels. 8 June Novel structural A novel structural laminated wood beam - the K beam from Kjeldstad - is an excellent example of how the search for ways to increase lumber yield as well as the added value of the company's products, combined with innovative adhesion and process solutions can bring about a new solution. By Per Hanetho kkjeldstad Sagbruk & Høvleri AS, is a saw and planing mill situated in the rural parish of Selbu in mid-norway. Traditionally, Selbu has been an agricultural and forestry parish, famous for its home craft products, in particular knitted goods, such as sweaters, hats and mittens with the popular Selbu pattern. Today, however, Selbu is also home to several industrial enterprises, including Kjeldstad. The company serves a variety of markets and its products range includes a full selection of timber products, further trusses and glulam and holiday cabins. Kjeldstad has lately completed one of the largest investment programmes in the Norwegian timber industry in recent years. The investments included a new saw mill, a fingerjointing line and a laminating line. Value added products focused Norway has forests that provide an ample supply of logs, and players in the timber industry need to have an edge on the competition. In order to obtain such an edge, Kjeldstad decided to focus on a high degree of value added products, based on market expectations, as well as strengthening its in-house competences. An important goal was to increase the yield of lumber. Whereas the average yield in similar mills is about 50 percent, Kjeldstad has successfully increased its own lumber yield to about 60 percent. A successful result of Kjeldstad's new business strategy, for value added products, is the K beam, a laminated beam that can be used in floor joists, attic trusses, trussed rafters and internal studs/posts. The K beam The K beam is a structural laminated beam that is classified as an I beam, with flanges of strength graded timber, and webs made up of laminated 17mm (2/3in) thick pieces of wood. A stud version without flanges is also produced. The development of the K beam can be seen as part of the efforts to increase the yield of lumber by increasing the value of low quality timber. This was achieved by making the core laminations from sideboards, that would otherwise have been sold as low quality and low priced timber to be used in production of for example pallets and crates. This represents a significant upgrading of the sideboards and wood beam at Kjeldstad the sideboards are now considered valuable timber useful in producing a structural, high quality product. This is one of the success factors that have enabled Kjeldstad to increase the yield. The K beam is a light wood beam suited for use in all types of wooden structures, such as joists, roof constructions, studs, sills and under-ties. It is simple to use together with ordinary timber. The design of the beam and the quality of the timber raw materials used to manufacture it gives the beam great stiffness and very good stability with regards to shrinking and straightness. The core laminations are oriented in such a way that a favourable annual growth ring direction significantly reduces swelling and shrinking. Dynea has worked closely with Kjeldstad to develop the K beam. The cooperation between Kjeldstad's wood experts and Dynea's glue specialists led to a successful result. Dynea was able to offer Kjeldstad the glue it needed to produce the K-beam. Thanks to good working relationships with European machinery manufacturers, Dynea was also able to recommend the most suitable glue application and finger-jointing equipment to Kjeldstad. Production of the K beam The K beam is produced in the laminating line. Put simply, the beam consists of flanges of 47mm (1 7/8in) thick solid wood complying with Strength Class C24 and 17mm (2/3in) thick core laminations consisting of finger-jointed sideboards. The laminating line includes a finger-jointing line where unsorted sideboards are run through a WoodEye CrossCut Sorter that identifies undesired knots and other defects that are subsequently removed in an OptiCut 350. The relatively short pieces (down to 150mm (6in)) that result from this process are finger-jointed with EPI glue Continuing... K Beam K beam exiting the press 47 n x H = 200 H = 250 or H = 300 The K Beam is a rectangular wooden beam glued-laminated of Norwegian softwood. The cross section consists of 47mm (1 7/8in) thick outer laminations and 17 mm (2/3 in) thick core laminations. The number of core laminations varies depending on the height of the beam. Moisture resistant EPI glue is used to glue the laminations together. The K Beam can be seen as an I-beam where the outer (face and back) laminations constitute the flanges and the core laminations the web. The outer laminations comply with Strength Class C24 according to the European standard EN338. They are finger-jointed to the desired length with phenol-resorcinol glue. The core laminations are built up from short pieces of wood, mm (6-35in) long that are finger-jointed with an EPI glue to greater lengths. They comply with Strength Class LT20 according to the INSTA 124 standard. Standard K Beam heights vary from 200 to 300mm (approx. 8 to 12in) and standard width from 36 to 70mm (approx. 1 3/8 to 2 1/2 in). Standard lengths are 3m and 6m (approx. 10 and 20ft). Beams of greater lengths.(up to 12m (almost 40ft)) can be produced by finger-jointing shorter beams. In Norway, the K Beam is approved for use in load-bearing structures conforming to Climate classes 1 and 2 according to the Norwegian Standard NS The K Beam is classified as combustible material according to the standard ISO 1182 and complies with Class D-s2 according to EN When calculating fire resistance, a charring rate of 0.8mm/min (1/32 in/min) can be used. 12

9 ...continuing to almost identical lengths of 6m (20ft). The finger-jointing units are made by Grecon-Dimter, and glue application by Oest. The line used for finger-jointing the solid wood pieces to be used as flanges uses radio frequent preheating of the ends to be jointed in order to speed up the curing of the glue and allow high speed of production. The flanges are finger-jointed with phenol-resorcinol glue. After completed curing of the glue, the finger-jointed timber for the core laminations (in fixed lengths) is planed to 17mm (2/3in) thickness and fed through a Mixon ribbon spreader where glue is applied. After glue has been applied, the laminations are put on edge and assembled to beams of desired height. In the production of I-beams, flanges are automatically added on each side. The assembly is fed to a continuous glulam press, Contipress 6300, operating at ambient temperature. The speed of the conveyor belts of the press is set to ensure that the assembly remains in the press for 30 minutes. After completed curing of the glue, the beams are dimension-trimmed on all four sides. The glue used for finger-jointing of the core laminations and for gluing the beam assembly is Dynea's transparent EPI glue Prefere 6151 used in combination with the hardener Prefere For more details about the EPI glue system please see the facts box below. K beam gets warm welcome Today, Kjeldstad can enjoy the high utilization degree of its production equipment, and demand for the K beam, both with and without flanges, is steadily growing. At present, the studs account for 30-40% of the total sales of the beam, and exhibit the faster growth. The good acceptance of the K beam by the marketplace is proof that Kjeldstad has been successful in not only identifying its customers' needs but also in developing an innovative and unique solution to fulfil those expectations. The two-component EPI system The two-component EPI (Emulsion Polymer Isocyanate) adhesive system used in the production a of the K Beam, Prefere 6151/6651, was presented in the January 2006 issue of Value For You. The major advantage of this system is that it is extremely fastsetting at low temperatures, curing at temperatures as low as 5ºC (41 degrees Fahrenheit). It requires only 30 minutes pressing time at room temperature to set, but still permits a 20 minute assembly time. Full bond strength is reached after 12 hours at 20ºC (68 degrees Fahrenheit). Low glue spreads are sufficient. Prefere 6151/6651 is formaldehyde-free and produces extremely low VOC emissions. It also has the advantage of a long shelf life. Dynea has been granted all necessary approvals in Europe, the USA and Japan for the Prefere 6151/6651 system to be used in the manufacture of structural laminated beams.
