11 COMPOSITES/PLASTICS BONDING Overview Henkel structural adhesives for composites and plastics are capable of bonding a variety of polymeric surfaces, including fi ber reinforced plastics (FRPs), gel coats, polycarbonate, ABS, PVC, and polyolefi ns. They have been specifi cally formulated to provide strong bonds, coupled with high impact and peel resistance. They are also used to bond dissimilar substrates that have varying thermal expansion rates (metal to plastic, for example). 16 Window Glazing Overview When securing windows to the metal frames of truck cabs, one of the following methods is employed: Mechanical gasketing with a rubber grommet Bonding or Glazing with an elastomeric adhesive Benefits Teroson Terostat moisture curing urethanes, with the assistance of primers, are typically used for window glazing and offer the following advantages over mechanical gasketing: Airtight seal, resulting in improved noise, vibration, and harshness enhancements Higher strength, leading to increased glass retention More automated assembly process, reducing labor costs FMVSS Certifi ed for drive away time A viable alternative to utilizing a urethane for window glazing is the use of a Teroson Terostat modifi ed silane (MS) based adhesive. 18 Seam Sealing Overview Henkel has the broadest line of seam sealants in our industry that can be used during any phase of a truck or trailer manufacturing operation. Seam sealants are applied to joined surfaces of truck and trailer interiors to prevent leakage. 20 Vibration Damping Overview Vibrating sheet metal can create unwanted sound in the interior of a truck body or trailer. Teroson Terophon liquid-applied sound deadeners (LASDs) and constrained layer damping patches are used to damp these vibrating surfaces, lowering decibel levels. When thinner sheet metal components are designed into truck and trailer components, noise, vibration, harshness (nvh) performance and strength are negatively affected. Teroson Terocore epoxy structural foams can be applied to these components, improving nvh characteristics, while providing improved stiffness. 22 Threadlocking and Thread Sealing Overview Threadlocking Loctite brand threadlockers prevent the loosening of threaded fasteners caused by vibration. The adhesive fi lls the space between the threads, hardening into a high strength, thermoset polymer. Threadlockers have a strong track record of improving the performance and reliability of threaded assemblies versus other methods, such as the use of lock washers or stop nuts. Thread Sealing Loctite brand thread sealants seal and secure plugs, pipes, and fi ttings, fi lling the spaces between threaded metal parts and hardening to prevent leakage. 24 Gasketing Overview Loctite brand formed-in-place gaskets can be used to replace or augment gaskets that are pre-cut. These products are dispensed on a fl ange as a liquid. When a fl ange is mated to another, the liquid hardens and bonds to both fl anges, forming a seal.
