Limitations This Safe Work Procedure is applicable to the construction of concrete pavements and kerbing. Refer to SWP 012 Traffic Control at Worksites Identify and Locate Services. # Refer to SWP 005 Overhead Services; SWP 006 Buried Services Saw cut concrete with demolition saw. # Soft tissue injuries. Inhalation of silica bearing dust. Foreign objects in eye. Not all damaged concrete removed. Uneven edges. Wear approved earmuffs or earplugs when operating demolition saw or working in the vicinity. Concrete saws on wheeled stands to remove need to lift or bend. Rotate sawing duties between crew members if extensive cutting is Arrange for large self propelled saw when extensive cutting Use water when cutting. Wear approved safety eye wear when sawing and breaking concrete. Plan cut to remove all damaged concrete. Cut full depth of concrete. 3 Break out and removal of concrete. Prepare subgrade. Soft tissue injuries. Foreign objects in eye. Struck by hammer. Trip hazard on broken concrete. Inadequate subgrade. Premature failure of footpaths and vehicle crossings. Trip hazard public or employees tripping, stumbling or slipping in excavated area. Use backhoe with breaker to break concrete into manageable pieces wherever practicable. Use backhoe to remove broken concrete and load onto truck where practicable. Wear thick leather gloves when handling broken concrete. If breaking manually, cut corner from slab to allow levering by crowbar. Break concrete with sledge hammer. If removing by hand, break into segments not more than 400mm on largest dimension and not exceeding 10kg in weight. Rotate breaking duties between crew members if extensive breaking is Wear approved protective eye wear at all times. All crew and visitors to stand well clear of backhoe and trucks whilst loading. Remove broken concrete and place on truck. Do not place broken concrete on footpath or roadways. Safety fences are erected to prevent inadvertent entry into the work area. Footpath and vehicle crossings are excavated to subgrade level. The subgrade is compacted. All soft, wet or otherwise unsuitable material is removed below subgrade level and replaced with fine crushed rock or gravel, compacted to form a stable foundation. Erect warning signs at all approaches. Erect safety fencing to prevent pedestrian access where excavation greater than 50mm below existing surface levels. 4 Place and compact crushed rock or recycled concrete base. # Place formwork and dowels. Reinforcement. General Safety Handling Concrete and Cement. whilst spreading sub base material and using vibrating plate compactor. Foreign objects in eyes. Soft tissue injury resulting from application of force whilst in when carrying timber or using hammer on pegs to secure timber. Soft tissue damage to back, whilst handling reinforcing steel due to weight and awkward posture. Puncture wounds to hands and limbs when handling reinforcing steel. Trip on reinforcing steel. Personnel may become sensitized to plastic concrete or cement. Refer to SWP 039 Crushed rock pavements Wear approved ear muffs or ear plugs whilst drilling or working within 5 metres of drilling activities. Wear approved safety eye wear whilst drilling. Rotate drilling duties if extensive drilling is Care in carrying formwork onto worksite use two person lift when necessary. Use of fibremesh where possible. Two person lift for heavy or awkward lengths of steel or mesh. Rotate tasks to ensure tasks involving awkward posture limited to 20 minutes continuous or 2 hours in total during the day. Wear leather gloves when handling reinforcing steel or mesh. Store reinforcing mesh clear of work area and travel paths until All workers using cement or plastic concrete must wear rubber gloves whilst handling cement and concrete (including finishing concrete). 5 Placement of concrete. Removal of formwork. Backfilling against edges to footpaths and vehicle crossings. Soft tissue damage to back, whilst shoveling and screeding concrete, heavy load and Soft tissue injury resulting from application of force whilst in when carrying timber. Trip hazard that could result in personal injury. Place concrete as close to required position as practicable. Use shovel to top up levels or to remove excess concrete from in front of screed. Training in manual handling techniques for screeding. Rotate tasks. Care in carrying formwork from worksite use two person lift when necessary. Topsoil or other material as specified to be placed and compacted against completed concrete works prior to opening for pedestrian traffic.
