3 Placement of Precast Pits Placing of Pits and Pit Sections. Construction of Cast In Place Pits General Safety Handling Concrete and Cement. Construction of Base. Reinforcement. Workers struck or crushed by pits or pit sections being lowered into excavation. Workers being crushed between installed pit sections or pipe sections and pit or pit section being lowered into excavation. Pipe sections installed incorrectly. Personnel may become sensitized to concrete or cement. All pits and pit sections to be lifted and transported using approved lifting devices only. All lifting devices must have WLL marked and be inspected; refer SWP 120 Lifting and Hoisting Equipment Pits and pit sections are lifted at designated lifting points only. Loads not to be lifted or suspended above other workers. Workers must not be between the suspended load and installed pit or pipe sections, trench supports or trench wall. Pits are installed at the locations and levels shown on the drawings. Follow manufacturer s instructions when placing segmented pit sections All workers who handle cement or concrete must wear appropriate gloves whilst handling and finishing cement and concrete Base not of specified thickness. Markers placed to indicate finished level of pit base. Soft tissue damage to back, shoulders, arms and hands whilst handling reinforcing steel due to weight and awkward posture. Puncture wounds to hands, limbs and body. Trips on reinforcing steel. Use fibremesh reinforced concrete where possible Two person lift for heavy or awkward lengths of steel or mesh. Rotate tasks to ensure tasks involving awkward posture limited to 20 minutes continuous or 2 hours in total during the day. Wear appropriate gloves when handling reinforcing steel or mesh. Store reinforcing mesh clear of work area and travel paths until required. SWP 104 Key OHS " Public Health and Safety # Environmental Quality Page 3 of 5
4 Formwork. Stormwater Drainage Connections Connect stormwater drainage pipes to Soft tissue damage to back, shoulders, arms and hands whilst handling formwork due to weight and awkward posture. Formwork not adequately fixed and braced. Working in confined spaces, potential contaminated atmosphere. Falls when climbing into or out of Use mechanical lifting (backhoe, crane, etc) where practicable, otherwise two person lift for heavy or awkward lengths of timber, steel or shutters. Construct formwork above ground as far as is practicable and lower into place with mechanical lifting device.. Rotate tasks to ensure tasks involving awkward posture limited to 20 minutes continuous or 2 hours in total during the day. Formwork is erected and securely fastened prior to pouring concrete. Do not operate petrol or diesel powered plant in or close to the edge of Implement Confined Spaces procedures if working in contaminated ground, making connections to live drains or close to sources of contaminants, including sewer and water treatment plants, gas control valves, processing plants, internal combustion engines and digester ponds. Ensure step irons are installed as per design and specification. Where step irons are not provided, fix a ladder into place. Ensure ladder projects at least one metre beyond top of pit. Safety footwear to be worn at all times. Awkward posture installing pipes at base of pit. Foreign objects in eye when cutting or breaking pipe projection. Rotate tasks so that no worker is in awkward posture for more than 20 minutes continuously or for more than 2 hours in total for shift. Wear approved safety eye wear at all times when cutting or breaking pipes. Leaking connections. Drainage connections are made in a neat and tidy manner. Trim the ends of all drains and finish with cement mortar. SWP 104 Key OHS " Public Health and Safety # Environmental Quality Page 4 of 5
5 Backfill Backfill in or adjacent to paved areas. Crushed rock or other material approved by the Works Officer is placed in layers not exceeding 150mm thickness to subgrade level. Backfill for pits not in or adjacent to paved areas. Compaction of backfill. Working in confined spaces, potential contaminated atmosphere. Falls when climbing into or out of excavation. Crushed rock or other material approved by the Overseer is placed in layers not exceeding 150mm thickness to a level 0.4m above the top of the culvert and with common filling above that. Each layer is compacted in accordance with requirements of the specification. Backfill is compacted to the requirements of the specifications. Do not operate petrol or diesel powered plant in or close to the edge of Implement Confined Spaces procedures if working in contaminated ground, making connections to live drains or close to sources of contaminants, including sewer and water treatment plants, gas control valves, processing plants, internal combustion engines and digester ponds. Provide ladder for entering and exiting the excavation. Ensure ladder is stable and projects at least one metre beyond top of excavation. Appropriate safety footwear to be worn at all times.
