2 Postgraduate study at Sheffield is a sound choice. This is one of the largest, most respected departments of its kind in the UK. In the last Research Assessment Exercise (published Dec 2008) all our research was assessed as being Internationally Recognised with 85% as Internationally Excellent or World Leading. Our reputation attracts postgraduates from all over the world. They work and learn in an atmosphere of innovation, supported by expert staff and first rate resources.

3 Taught courses We run four courses Structural Engineering (SE) Steel Construction (SC) Concrete Engineering (CE) Earthquake and Civil Engineering Dynamics (ECED) and there are four ways to study 12 months full-time Diploma 24 months part-time Diploma 12 months full-time MSc (Eng) 24 months part-time MSc (Eng) Courses are modular, in blocks of two or three weeks. The full time MSc consists of 12 ten-credit courses with a 60-credit dissertation during the summer. A certificate is awarded on the successful completion of 60 credits worth of taught modules. The diploma is awarded for the successful completion of 120 credits of taught modules. Individual modules are available as continuous professional development (CPD) courses. 4 Research opportunities We offer MPhil, PhD and a PhD with integrated MSc. Flexible study modes are available: full-time, part-time, and research away from the University on a joint or remote location. Entry requirements MSc Minimum 2:2 degree in civil engineering or an appropriate science. MPhil and PhD Minimum 2:1 BSc/BEng/MEng, or MSc in civil engineering or science. 6 Funding Research students can apply to the Departmental Scholarship scheme to cover part of the tuition fees. Full or partial funding for living costs may also be available for some projects.
