2 wing, entrance AND floor naming The refurbishment of the library with the addition of the new extension and new entrances is the perfect opportunity to take a fresh look at wing entrance and level naming. New Extension Wings The labelling of each library wing has a distinct navigational advantage providing an extra layer of taxonomy; if a user is given a classmark or service location on a given floor, and in addition a district of that floor, they are already a step closer to their destination. Option 1 An alphabetic system A,B,C,D when viewed facing the South Facade. Option 2 An Alphabetical system utilising British indigenous trees. This reflects the proximity of the Canterbury Campus ancient woodland and the fact that printed material in a library is derived from trees. Naming could be Ash, Beech, Chestnut, Damson. Option 1 A B C D Option 2 Ash Beech Chestnut Damson Entrance Names Option 1 Leading on the A-D wing naming with the addition of entrance face compass orientation ie. A (North), A (South), C (North), C (South). Option 1 A (North) C (North) Option 2 Utilising the tree naming system with the addition of compass orientation ie. Ash Entrance (North), Ash Entrance (South), Chestnut Entrance (North), Chestnut Entrance (South). A (South) C (South) Floors At present level labelling takes the form 0,1,2,3,4 0 being the basement level. The designation of 1 for ground level creates ambiguity is this the first floor? it does not comply with common convention and is therefore counter-intuitive. The standard floor naming convention of Lower Ground (LG), Ground (G) 1, 2, 3 is therefore recommended. 3 LARGE Main entrance south option 1 EXTERior signs The templeman Library logotype will be set into concrete at the main central entrance (South Facade) and the Lower Ground entrance (NortH Facade). The process will give the effect that the Templeman Library name has been debossed into the concrete. At the Main Entrance (South) the sign will span the whole of the western fin at the centre wing. At the Main Entrance (North) an identical effect will be achieved in a concrete totem. option 2 Main entrance north

4 From entrance to bookshelf The following journey illustrates how wayfinding guides the user from first point of contact to the publication on the shelf. 1 the directory DISPLAY Your first point of contact with the wayfinding on entering the library. The freestanding directory is positioned at key entry and decision making points. An example of how the freestanding directory could look; this one would be located at the Main Lower Ground Entrance (North). It enables you to understand spacial layout and locate publications, services and facilities at a glance by single alphabetical index. When locating publications you can navigate the map using your preferred criteria, be it classmark or subject. 2 the Floor directory You have used the directory display to obtain the location of the publication or service you require. If your journey takes you to another floor this directory gives reassurance and a summary of what s on each floor.

5 From entrance to bookshelf Continued... A. Bespoke metal fin with current floor data. This reflects the architecture of the facade and is reminiscent of an index divider. B. Clear header displaying the current wing name. C. Individual alphabetical indexes for subjects, classmarks and services with floor and wing location. D. Classmarks and key facilities You Are Here location marked on an orientated floor map. 3 the floor location map At the entry to each floor you ll see an orientated map of the floor accompanied by a subject, classmark and service index. 6 A helping hand Between the main entry and decision making points directional signage reassures library users. Main directional signage applied directly to architectural surfaces provides directions to key locations including other wings. Wing specific directional signage Directions to more detailed wing specific destinations. These entries are grouped together where possible. The fin and wing name reinforces current location. This smaller wing specific signage is printed to a white substrate for legibility across a variety of architectural surfaces. Door AND washroom Signage Standard doors utilise a three part naming convention combining wing, floor and door number. Washroom signage is applied directly to doors this can be seen across the open plan layouts reducing the need for further signage. A

7 STUDY ZONES large scale wall mounted colour coded graphics give a high legibility label to individual study areas. Three contrasting colours ways have been chosen to represent the study types. They are taken from the furniture fabrics that will be present throughout the spaces. Social Quiet Silent large Floor signage is present at entry to all floors in stairwells, by lifts. Example of graphics for the three study zone types. The graphics will be printed and cut vinyl Large format lettering to tie in with the landmark location signage. They will be mounted to floor to ceiling inter-changable panels to give flexibility in study spaces at key periods of the year. The study zone identity also translates to perspex table signs to strengthen instructions and give added flexibility.
