1 International Existing Building Code 2006 The 2006 International Existing Building Code contains requirements intended to encourage the use and reuse of existing buildings. The Code provides an understanding of applying current building regulations to existing buildings. For example the existing building may require a full electrical upgrade inside home dwelling and may require a new outside breaker panel box to handle the new electric load calculations that comply with local National Electrical Code that jurisdiction has adopted. The Code covers repair, alteration, addition, and change of occupancy for existing buildings and historic buildings. It conforms to appropriate levels of safety without requiring full compliance with the new construction requirements in the building code. Also, code does not require the entire structure to be erected, altered to meet code. The addition and repair of an existing structure can be done, along as buiding inspector and/or structural engineer inspects the premises and enforces compliance with the provisions of this code.

2 Reinforcing the existing building materials for example can be used on a historical adobe home structure. One method used before on a traditional adobe home, by way of using threaded rod anchors toe into adobe with a two part epoxy fast set. This process can better anchor an historical adobe home roof structure, along as building inspector and/or structural engineer inspects the adobe walls and determine if entire adobe wall structure is stable enough. Furthermore, building codes allow for alternative building materials such as stabilize adobe. Adobe construction building codes requires builders to add a stabilizer such as liquid asphalt mix or portland cement to adobe brick. By adding a stabilizer to adobe brick it would increase the compressive strength of the block. See attached pictures below on a traditional home dwelling that used the threaded rod anchors.

3 ½ in. rebar placed along threaded rods anchored to adobe and strapped down with bailing wire. The two part epoxy fast set bonds to threaded rod & adobe. Then filled in with cement.

4 Threaded rods are not placed over door and window openings. Threaded rods are 2 ft. long and ½ in. thickness. Also, requires a ¾ in. masonry bit to drill the 1 ft. bore hole into the adobe wall. Bore hole will need to be cleaned out and crews will utilize an air hose connected to an air compressor to blow dust out. Then threaded rod will be placed into new bore hole and filled in with two part fast set Anchoring Epoxy. As epoxy sets crews use a small level to set the new anchor.

8 90# rolled roofing over 15# felt underlayment. Pisinemo District workers built a cricket between existing restroom addition and adobe home. Purpose to divert rain water away where two structures meet.

9 Electrical improvements to existing light fixtures, outlets, and light switches inside home dwelling to meet current electrical building codes. R 30 batt insulation installed in ceiling before drywall installation.

10 Exposed adobe by soffit end will be plastered with a mixture of lime, local wash sand and Portland cement.

Traditional construction anchoring methods at the time used barb wire wrapped around adobe wall and pressure treated wood top plate. Barb wire through time will tend to rust and break apart.
