PORTUGAL Planting project following wildfire
GENERAL INFORMATIONS Type of project Ecosystem restauration after wildfire. Context In June 2017, a huge fire harshly touched the country. Therefore, this plantation project was initiated.theflameshaveruinednotfarfrom30000hectaresandmadeaboutsixtydeaths.in Portugal, we observe recurrent issues of wildfires due to forestery. Reforest'Action is working in collaboration with the Regional Administration and many forest experts. We want to achieve a new plan of action, with different species of Eucalyptus, usually planted in Portugal. Earnings This plantation project will restore a devastated ecosystem following fires. The aim is to give back to this environment its biodiversity, with a variety of species favoring hardwood, and to fight against global warming. Estimated end date of project End of March Planted species Pedunculate oak (60%) Oak cork (20%) Holm oak (10%) Ash (10%) Country : PORTUGAL Subregion : Pinhal Interior North City : Pedrógão Grande, Figueiró dos Vinhos & Castanheira de Pera Number of tree planted : Field partner : Silvapor Parcel owner : the Municipality Expected benefits : work days created miles by car compensated animal shelters created kg of stored CO months of oxygen generated 1

3 GEOGRAPHICAL FRAMEWORK The Forest in Portugal Portugal has one of the largest forest sectors in Europe (35.8% of its area). This forest is like the French forest, mainly 85% private, and the rest of the forest heritage is held mainly by the municipalities. The state only owns 3%. The Forest is made up of many hardwoods, including many eucalyptus and some pines. Oak (pedunculate and tauzin) and chestnut are also found on the coast. A Mediterranean climate The climate is characteristic of southern Europe and baby trees will experience hot, dry summers and sometimes mild winters. Planting will be in March, to avoid the coldest months of January and February. However, this does not exclude cold waves periodically as in all Mediterranean regions. The real risk occurrs during the hottest months, with an average temperature above 20 C in summer almost everywhere. In July and August there can be peaks of more than 45 C in some areas.
STAKES AND OBJECTIVES FIRE FIGHTING (home protection) HUMIDIFICATION OF AIR AND STORAGE OF CO2 (fight against global warming) DEVELOPMENT OF BIODIVERSITY CREATION OF HUMUS DURING LEAF DECOMPOSITION (soil enrichment) WATER FILTRATION AND RETENTION (limitation of soil deterioration) 4
BENEFITS OF THE PROJECT IN RELATION TO GOAL 3 GOOD HEALTH AND WELL-BEING - Generation of months oxygen - Refreshing and decontaminating air near the plantation GOAL 6 CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION - Rainwater retention - Water purification (nitrate filtration) GOAL 7 CLEAN ENERGY - Exploitation of mature oak wood as firewood, clean, natural, local and renewable energy * GOAL 8 WORK - Creation of 1250 days of work in the subregion - Stimulation of the country's economy (the wood industry represents more than jobs in Portugal) PORTUGAL PROJECT GOAL 9 INDUSTRY, INNOVATION, INFRASTRUCTURE - Exploiting pine and oak timber as a sustainable and environmentally friendly building material as well as many other uses... GOAL 13 CLIMATE ACTION - Air humidification GOAL 15 LIFE ON LAND - Biodiversity development: creation of animal shelters GOAL 17 PARTNERSHIPS FOR THE GOALS - Project resulting from the partnership between Silvapor and Reforest'Action kg of CO2 * Sustainable Development Goal Set adopted by the UN countries to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. 5
6 PROJECT PLANIFICATION Choice of tree species according to the terrain. Drafting of the sustainable management plan. Implementation of the project (soil preparation, planting...) JUNE 2017 AGUST MAY 2019 DECEMBER 2024 JUILY MARCH 2018 MARCH 2019 Submission of the project to Reforest'Action by the owner. Definition of action perimeter. Validation of the project and signature of the contract between the owner and Reforest'Action. Tracking the evolution of trees by Reforest'Action and the owner.
