serving conservation efforts Conservation International (CI) is a nonprofit organization working in more than 30 countries around the world since 1987 and in Peru since We believe that people depend on nature to have a stable climate, clean air, fresh water, food security, cultural resources and other additional benefits our world s biodiversity provides. Hence, our work focuses on ensuring a healthy and productive planet for us all. Building upon a strong foundation of science, partnership and field demonstration, CI empowers societies to responsibly and sustainably care for nature, our global biodiversity, for the well-being of humanity. CI works with the support of local partners who implement projects and activities related to conservation and development. CI also works directly with the Ministry of Environment; supporting the development of national-scale initiatives, such as the design and implementation of the national REDD+ strategy, valuation of natural resources and the development of alliances to promote the National Forest Conservation Program for the Mitigation of Climate Change. Further more, CI Peru works with the National Service of Natural Protected Areas (SERNANP) through the Administration Contract of the Alto Mayo Protected Forest. At the sub-national level, CI works with regional governments and the Consejo Interegional Amazónico CIAM, which an alliance of the regional governments of Amazonas, Loreto, Madre de Dios, San Martin and Ucayali.

SAN MARTIN REGION Located in the northwest of the Peruvian Amazon, the San Martin region is part of the Abiseo-Condor-Kutukú Conservation Corridor. The natural protected areas in this region cover 3.35 million hectares (64.62% of the total land area), including the Alto Mayo Protected Forest. With the expansion of infrastructure development (mainly roads) and agriculture, the rate of deforestation in the region has increased, affecting the livelihoods of local communities and indigenous peoples. The regional government is working to promote green economies in the region and encourage sustainable development. Conservation International Peru supports these efforts through its initiatives and projects. Shampuyacu GOBERNANCE AND RESTORATION of river vegetation in the native community of Shampuyacu Implement a pilot project for the restoration of river banks in the Native Community of Shampuyacu to restore local ecosystems, food security and traditional knowledge. LORETO 1. Develop a deforestation baseline and reference scenario in San Martín. DEVELOPING REDD+ IN SAN MARTÍN 2.Implement OSIRIS, a REDD+ policy tool for decision makers in the region. We work with the Regional Government of San Martín, key partners, and local stakeholders in the development of REDD+ capacities in San Martín. 3. Develop a readiness plan for the implementation of REDD+ in San Martín. Build Capacity on the role of forests in Climate Change with technicians and leaders from indigenous communities of San Martín. Regional REDD+ Roundtable: Led by the Regional Government to implement strategies for reducing deforestation and mitigating negative effects of climate change. Support the implementation of the Regional Office for Development of Indigenous People of San Martín. Awajún Native Communities REDD+: Reducion of Emissions derived from Deforestation and Degradation of forests. The + refers to the role of conservation, sustainable forest management, and the improvement of forest s carbon stocks in developing countries. Safeguards for REDD+: The REDD+ safeguards implement institutional policies and procedures focused on achieving two objectives: i) Secure the social and environmental benefits resulting from REDD+, and ii) Avoid the possible risks and social and environmental damages originating form REDD+. REDD+ SES Initiative: Implement and monitor safeguards for REDD+ in San Martín. The region is a pilot for future national model. SIS: System of safeguards information. SES: Social and Environmental Standards for REDD+ Support the safeguards process at the regional level Build a pilot in San Martín for the SIS national process with the guidance of the REDD+ SES Initiative, including inputs and celar links with Peruvian Environment Ministry. The project works both regionally and nationally goals. SAN MARTÍN Objective1: Test and evaluate the benefits distribution mechanisms for REDD+ actions, based on performance and consistent with national REDD+ strategies. Northern Interoceanic Highway Sector II and III. Passing through San Martín, the road crosses the Alto Mayo Protected Forest and ist Buffer Zone REDD+ Facilitating REDD+ Benefit sharing schemes. Objetctive2: Identify and promote economic agreements and institucional and policy changes necessary to facilitate equitable management and afficient performance-based payments for REDD+ activities. CI promotes an integrated basin management approach that aims to serve as a model for the governance of basins for the entire Andean-Amazon region. CONSERVATION CAMPAIGN FOR THE YURACYACU SUBWATERSHED We work with the Municipality of Nueva Cajamarca to implement Reciprocal Agreements for Water Resources. In the current phase we seek to create an environmental fund to support the agreements. Reciprocal Water Agreements: This scheme proposes that the population located in the lower part of the basin contribute to a local fund to finance conservation actions in the upper part of the basin. This fund provides actual benefits or incentives to people, who in exchange commit to undertake concrete measures to maintain healthy forest areas. Feasible early REDD+ actions through appropriate benefit distribution mechanisms, fair and favorable to the poor, to be sufficiently robust for long-term integration within the frameworks of national and international REDD+. Objetivo 3: Innovatibe and dynamic communities promote lessons learned in the design and implementation of REDD+ benefit distribution mechanisms to enhance South-South cooperation and support the work of international initiatives alignes with the REDD+ Partnership.

A bit of history CI started working in Peru by promoting the establishment of natural protected areas (NPAs) in biodiversity hotspots. To this end, CI implemented rapid assessment programs (RAPs) such as those held in Tambopata-Candamo (1992), Cordillera del Cóndor ( ) and Vilcabamba ( ). These early surveys were essential for the subsequent establishment by the government as NPAs: Reserva Nacional Tambopata and the expansion of Parque Nacional Bahuaja Sonene (2000); Parque Nacional Otishi, Reserva Comunal Machigenga and Reserva Comunal Ashaninka (2003); and Parque Nacional Ichigkat Muja, Cordillera del Cóndor (2007). In Tambopata, Vilcabamba and Cordillera del Condor CI Peru worked to consolidate this protected areas through the development of master plans and building the capacity of Management Committees. For more than 20 years, CI has worked in NPA buffer zones, developing initiatives for sustainable management of natural resources, such as Brazil nuts, management of fisheries and organic coffee. To achieve this goal, we developed alliances with local populations, immigrants and indigenous people. Between 2004 and 2011, in alliance with the Antamina mining company, CI supported the Conservation Corridor of the Polylepis forests in Callejón de Conchucos, in Ancash. We developed conservation agreements with local communities aimed at protecting the forests. In addition, working with 11 indigenous communities in the Pichis Valley and Cordillera del Condor, we developed sustainable community forest management projects. Our work today Currently, we support the development and implementation of policies that empower and motivate people through knowledge, livelihoods and economic opportunities for the care of their natural resources. We believe that healthy ecosystems are the foundation for human prosperity and we work with governments, enterprises and local communities to promote the development of healthy and sustainable societies. We focus our work in three scales: national, sub-national and local. At each level, we foster the design and implementation of policies and legislation that promote the sustainable development of natural resources. We also contribute through capacity building and exchange of best practices based on our own learning. While some of our work is focused on providing technical assistance to the public sector primarily the Ministry of Environment and regional governments we also work with local partners supporting the private sector and civil society to establish environmental services payment schemes at the local level. Similarly, we participate in international negotiations related to climate change and biodiversity and contribute technical expertise in these processes. Finally, our demonstration projects provide lessons learned and outcomes that are amplified through policies, new economic opportunities, capacity building and communications efforts. Working in San Martin CI is focusing its efforts in the upper part of the Mayo river basin. Having the administration contract of the Alto Mayo Protected Forest (AMPF) lead us to think in the management of the Alto Mayo landscape, where we could moved towards designing and implementing water resources initiatives, development of green business, strengthen local communities, including working indigenous peoples and the local governments. The AMPF is a national protected area recognized for its high levels of endemism and watershed protection. Through carbon financing provided by a REDD project funded by Disney and other private donors, CI is supporting the National Service of Natural Protected Areas to achieve the management of the area and the financial sustainability. Implementing Conservation Agreements in the Alto Mayo Protected Forest.

Making transects in the Yuracyacu sub-watershed. The BioCuencas: conservation of biodiversity and aquatic resources project, funded by the Government of Finland, aims to promote an integrated watershed management model to benefit human well-being and conserve the extensive biodiversity in Alto Mayo. Additionally, CI is implementing in collaboration with the Municipality of Nueva Cajamarca, the Conservation Campaign for the Yuracyacu watershed. Based on a strong social marketing component, the campaign will support the design and implementation of a Payment for Water Services Scheme, which will serve as a model to be replicated in other sub-basins. Also, CI is implementing the Governance and restoration of river vegetation in the native community of Shampuyacu project, aiming to restore the ecosystems, food security and traditional knowledge. We also work with the Regional Government of San Martin, key partners and local stakeholders in the development of REDD+ strategy. This includes (a) Implementing a Capacity building process on Climate Change and the role of forests with leaders from Indigenous Communities of San Martin so they can share this knowledge with their communities and be prepared to participate effectively in the economic development initiatives and processes of the San Martin region. (b) Support the implementation of the Regional Office for Development of Indigenous People of San Martin and (c) Support the work of the REDD+ Regional Table. In this context, we are also working with the REDD+ SES Initiative to build a pilot for a National Safeguards Information System - SIS. Also related to REDD+, CI in collaboration with International Union for Conservation of Nature IUCN and AIDER, is implementing a project to develop and facilitate REDD+ Benefit Sharing schemes. Finally, CI Peru, as a part of its healthy and sustainable societies approach, is implementing initiatives to promote a new economic paradigm. The Ecosystem Values Assessment & Accounting Project is a pilot initiative to design and test a replicable and scalable ecosystem accounting model, incorporating the value of nature into decisionmaking and informing sustainable policies and practices. As a demonstration project, the Sustainable Landscape Partnership for Peru, funded by USAID supports green economies development in San Martin, protecting the natural capital and valuing ecosystem services under a rights-based approach. To achieve this goal, CI will promote the establishment of a public-private investment platform for implementing green business, contributing to reduce deforestation, and associated greenhouse gases emission, in the Alto Mayo basin.

OUR VISION We imagine a healthy, prosperous world in which societies are forever committed to caring for and valuing nature, our global biodiversity, for the long-term benefit of people and all life on Earth. OUR MISSION Building upon a strong foundation of science, partnership and field demonstration, CI empowers societies to responsibly and sustainably care for nature, our global biodiversity, for the well-being of humanity. peru Av.
