5 FOREWORD The Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi established All India Coordinated Research Project on Oilseeds in 1967 subsequently resulted in the establishment of separate All India Coordinated Research Project on Rapeseed-Mustard (AICRPRM) in 1981 to develop location specific ecological sound and economical viable production and protection technologies for rapeseed-mustard, their assessment and dissemination. There is strong network of 181 scientific, technical and administrative personnel at 11 main-and 12 sub-centres spread over 17 states with Project Coordinating Unit at Directorate of Rapeseed-Mustard Research (DRMR) at Bharatpur, Rajasthan. Further, several private organizations are actively involved in rapeseed-mustard research, product development and seed production. The DRMR since its inception in 1993 has been serving as repository and resource centre for providing information on all aspects of the crop. The present efforts to collate the vast scattered information on research and development personnel, organizations/ institutions involved in furthering the cause of rapeseed-mustard crops in India in the form of Directory of the Rapeseed-Mustard Research Workers in India are timely and well conceived. I am sure this publication would facilitate effective linkages and networking and also serve as a useful resource book for reference by governments, public/ private institutions and AICRPRM Centres throughout the country. Further, value has been added to the publication by providing crop and project profile as well as other useful data. 7 PREFACE Directorate of Rapeseed-Mustard Research, Bharatpur, Rajasthan has been serving as a resource centre for information on various aspects of rapeseedmustard crops and regularly collating, publishing and updating bulletins for the benefit of the stakeholders for promoting research and development in this important group of oilseed crops since its inception in We felt it prudent to bring out directory compiling the vast but scattered information regarding the personnel/institutions/ organizations in India having keen interest &/or involved in promotion of these crops in India especially public and private partners in the multidisciplinary All India Coordinated Research Project on Rapeseed-Mustard (AICRPRM). Directory containing brief bio-data of researchers, their alphabetic listing, public and private organizations with details of contact personnel, it is expected, to be a resource to facilitate accelerated development of linkages, establishing networks, exchange of ideas and dissemination of generated technology. Besides information on 126 personnel form 28 institutions/universities in 18 states of India, the directory also provides glimpses of history of the research and development in this vital group of crops culminating in the launching of AICRPRM, its mandate and status of the crop in India. We hope this Directory to be useful and informative to all the stakeholders. Rapeseed-Mustard Crops: Scenario Rapeseed-mustard crops in India comprise traditionally grown indigenous species, namely toria, brown sarson, yellow sarson, Indian mustard, black mustard and taramira, which have been grown since about 3,500 BC along with non-traditional species like gobhi sarson and Ethiopian mustard or karan rai (Table 1). Indian mustard accounts for about 80% of about over 6.0 million hectare (mha) under these crops in the country during crop season. The cultivation of brown sarson which once dominated the entire rapeseed-mustard growing region is now shadowed by Indian mustard. There are two different ecotypes of brown sarson: lotni (self-incompatible) and 1

12 tora (self-compatible). The lotni is predominantly cultivated in colder regions of the country particularly in Kashmir and Himachal valley. The tora on the other hand is cultivated in limited areas of eastern Uttar Pradesh. Yellow sarson is now mainly grown in Assam, Bihar, North-eastern States, Orissa, eastern Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. Toria is a short duration crop cultivated largely in Assam, Bihar, Orissa and West Bengal in the east mainly as winter crop. In Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand and western Uttar Pradesh, it is grown as a catch crop. Taramira is grown in the drier parts of North-west India comprising the states of Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Gobhi sarson and karan rai are the new emerging oilseed crops having limited area of cultivation. Gobhi sarson is a long duration crop Rapeseed-Mustard Growing Areas in India confined to Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. Rapeseed-mustard crops because of their low water requirement fit well in the rainfed cropping system of resource poor farmers. Globally, India ranks 2 nd in area after China contributing 26.4 % and 3 rd in production after China and Canada contributing 14.8 % during The contribution of rapeseed-mustard to the total oilseed acreage and production in India is 23.7% and 26.0%, respectively (Fig.1). The yield of rapeseed-mustard was 1159 kg/ha as compared to 969 kg/ha of total oilseeds. The rapeseed-mustard production trends represent fluctuating scenario with an all time high production of 8.13 mt from 7.28 mha acreage during The yield levels also have been variable ranging from 1001 ( ) to 1159 kg/ha ( ) during the past six years (Fig. 2). Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat and West Bengal states accounted for nearly 90% area of rapeseed-mustard in the country. Rajasthan alone contributed 45.5% of the total area under rapeseed-mustard followed by Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana and 48.6% of the total rapeseed-mustard production followed by Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and West Bengal. Together these states accounted for 94% of the rapeseed-mustard production in the country (Fig. 3). During the period to , the productivity of Haryana, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab and UP was above 1000 kg/ha in the descending order.
