Compartment Review Presentation Crystal Falls Forest Management Unit Compartment Entry Year Acreage: County ,2 Iron Management Area: Ralph Ground Moraine Identified Planning Goals: Develop age class distribution in aspen type. Develop the quality while maintaining diversity in hardwood types. Maintain health of conifer types and increase acreage where possible. Develop buffers on lakes and streams. Maintain and improve road system. Soil and topography: Nearly level to hilly, well drained to somewhat poorly drained, loamy soils on moraines and end moraines. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: State lands mixed with company lands and private parcels. Lands used mainly for hunting and fishing. Unique Natural Features: Headwaters of the Ford River. Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: Multiple compartments were determined to have no known archaeological sites within them; we have no concerns for these compartments:, 4,,, 7, 7, 9, 2, 6, 8, 42, 44, 6, 66, and 86. Special Management Designations or Considerations: None. Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: Mix of Way Dam drainage and Ford River watershed headwaters. 29 there is a small pond/wetland int he western portion that should receive a foot buffer. For all other riparian areas, BMPs should be followed to maintain canopy cover and prevent erosion into waterbodies. Wildlife Habitat Considerations: This compartment contains part of a critical deer wintering complex that provides shelter and forage for deer in Iron County. Featured species in this Management Area (Ralph Ground Moraine MA) include; deer, bear, grouse, woodcock and northern goshawk. Moose, eagles, osprey, and wolves all have been documented in this compartment. Red-shoulder hawk presence is highly probable. Management for Deer winter cover, including transition zones, movement corridors and conifer component throughout the forage stands is critical in this compartment. Aspen age class diversity is an important management goal to provide deer, bear, grouse and woodcock and goshawk habitat. The hemlock pine, spruce/fir component provides both winter cover for deer to access forage in uplands, and provides ideal habitat for black bears. Oak in the compartment provides mast important for most of the featured species identified for this MA. Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions Sand/gravel pits are not located in the area, but there may be some potential in the compartment. There has been extensive iron ore exploration in this area but never any mining. A significant magnetic anomaly crosses the area, and there may be metallic mineral potential. There are currently no active leases but the area has been leased in the past. There is no economic oil and gas production in the UP. Vehicle Access: Access is through private and corporate land from Way Dam Road or Tenth Street by woods roads. Survey Needs: None. Conservation Area Type Description ERA = Ecological Reference Area HCVA = High Conservation Value Area SCA = Special Conservation Area SCA SCA SCA SCA Cold Water Lake Cold Water Stream Habitat Area Riparian Area A coldwater lake has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species to persist from year to year. Suitable conditions for coldwater fishes may occur in Michigan lakes if they are relatively deep, have substantial groundwater inflows, or are located in colder (northern) areas of the state. Such lakes are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 2. A coldwater stream has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species (e.g., slimy sculpin) to persist from year to year. Coldwater streams in Michigan typically provide these conditions due to substantial contributions of groundwater to their stream flows. Such streams are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 2. An area that provide some specific need for the life cycle of wildlife species, including State Wildlife Areas and Waterfowl Production Areas, deer wintering complexes in lowland conifer communities, grassland openings and savannas. Habitat areas are distinct from critical habitat designated for recovery of endangered or threatened species (such as Kirtland's warbler or piping plover areas) in that they are more general in nature, are not primarily associated with threatened or endangered species, and are not covered by species recovery plans that are developed in cooperation with Federal agencies. A transitional area between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in which the terrestrial ecosystem influences the aquatic ecosystem and vice-versa. Because of the unique conditions adjacent to lakes, streams and open water wetlands, riparian areas harbor a high diversity of plants and wildlife. Riparian communities are ecologically and socially significant in their effects on water quality and quantity, as well as aesthetics, habitat, bank stability, timber production, and their contribution to overall biodiversity. //2 2::2 PM - Page of
