1 Revision Date: 10/31/2013 Stand Examiner: Chad Fate Legal Description: Sections 35 and 36, T37N-R1E Identified Planning Goals: Timber and wildlife habitat Compartment Review Presentation Atlanta Forest Management Unit Compartment Entry Year Acreage: County ,219 Cheboygan Management Area: Hammond Bay Lake Plain Soil and topography: Topography is flat and soils are gravely sands with a high water table in some areas. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: Private parcels to the west along twin lakes. Private hunting property to the north and east (old Abitibi land). State land to the south. Unique Natural Features: Potential for red shoulder hawk and eastern massasauga. Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: No Archeological, Historical, or Cultural Features known. Special Management Designations or Considerations: Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: Twin Lakes are just west of the compartment. Black Lake is 2.5 miles south. Wildlife Habitat Considerations: This compartment is a mixture of upland and lowland types which provides habitat to black bear, white-tailed deer, ruffed grouse, and woodcock as featured species. s in aspen types should include features that benefit these species including down woody debris and brush piles. There is good potential for rare raptor nesting and nests should be buffered in any timber harvest. Openings in this compartment are mostly converting to shrub or low density trees and should be treated with fire to set back this succession to provide wildlife with a mixture of habitat types. There is a large stand of 35 year old aspen that should be broken up in future entries to create a mosaic of age classes for diversity of habitat for grouse and deer. Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions Surface sediments consist of lacustrine (lake) sand and gravel. The glacial drift thickness varies between 100 and 400 feet. Beneath the glacial drift is the Devonian Detroit River Group, used for dolomite/stone. A gravel pit is located in Section 35 and there may be some potential in the compartment. This area has had little drilling for oil and gas although a few deep wells were drilled to the north. Oil and gas producing Guelph (Niagaran) Reefs are located 20 miles to the southeast. The entire Compartment is leased for oil and gas development. Vehicle Access: Access is good off of Krouse Rd and Alpena State Rd. There are numerous 2-tracks and snowmobile trail running through the compartment. Survey Needs: Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: Snowmobile and ORV Trails along with hunting.
