2010 Statement Prime Minister's Office 10 April 2010 Statement by Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt "I have been dismayed to learn that the President of Poland, Lech Kaczynski, and his wife, together with a large delegation of representatives of Polish society, have died in an air crash today. What has happened is a great disaster for our neighbour country, and our thoughts today go to the families and friends of those who have died and to the whole Polish nation." 2 Prime Minister's Office 15 March 2010 Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt comments on the Riksdag's decision concerning the events in 1915 in the then Ottoman Empire The motion presented by a number of Members was approved by the Riksdag by a margin of one vote. The decision calls on the Government to recognise the events of 1915 in the then Ottoman Empire as genocide. "I informed Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Saturday that I regret the decision of the Riksdag, as it paves the way for a politicisation of historical events. I also expressed my concern that this could be used by forces in Turkey that are trying to put a stop to the process of reconciliation with Armenia and the process of reform in Turkey. "The process of reform that is now in progress in Turkey is positive for possible future membership of the European Union. It is a process that takes time and must be allowed to do so. "The people of Sweden have a positive view of Turkey. The many Turks who live and work here have played an important role in the development of our society. I hope that these valuable contacts between people will help us get over what has now happened. "What is important now is that we are able to prevent any deterioration in the extraordinarily good relations between our countries, by continuing our open and constructive dialogue. The Government will continue to act energetically to advance Turkey's EU process."

2009 Statement Prime Minister's Office 11 August 2009 Statement by Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt on the engagement of Princess Madeleine and Mr Jonas Bergström At an extraordinary meeting today, the Government has decided, at the request of HM The King, to grant its consent to the marriage of Princess Madeleine to Mr Jonas Bergström. "I would like to express my warmest congratulations and very best wishes to Princess Madeleine and Jonas Bergström," says Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt. 4 Prime Minister's Office 06 April 2009 Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt on the earthquake in Italy On behalf of the Swedish Government I wish to express my deepest condolences on the loss of so many innocent lives caused by the devastating earthquake. We also wish to convey our heartfelt sympathy to the families of the victims.

2008 Statement Prime Minister's Office 06 October 2008 Statement by the EU Heads of State and Heads of Government All the leaders of the European Union make clear that each of them will take whatever measures are necessary to maintain the stability of the financial system - whether through liquidity support through central banks, action to deal with individual banks or enhanced depositor protection schemes. While no depositors in our countries' banks have lost any money, we will continue to take the necessary measures to protect both the system and individual depositors. In taking these measures, European leaders acknowledge the need for close coordination and cooperation.

Prime Minister's Office 26 August 2008 Fredrik Reinfeldt on Russia's recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia "It is extremely serious that President Medvedev has today decided to recognise Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states." This was said by Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, commenting on the situation. "Russia's decision is contrary to international law and to fundamental principles for stability in Europe. This decision will have consequences for Russia's relations with the rest of the world. "It is important for the conflict in Georgia to be resolved by peaceful means. Georgia's territorial integrity must be respected and we must see a full withdrawal of Russian troops. An extra EU summit on 1 September will give us the opportunity to discuss how we can best support Georgia."

2007 Statement Prime Minister's Office 30 July 2007 "For many Bergman was absolutely the greatest dramatist," says Fredrik Reinfeldt "Ingmar Bergman was one of the world's greatest dramatists - for many people he was absolutely the greatest. I think that it is hard to fully understand and grasp the scale of the enormous contribution to Swedish film and drama in Sweden and abroad that Ingmar Bergman now leaves behind. His works are immortal. And I hope that his heritage will be cared for and built on for a long time to come," says Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt in response to the news of the death of Ingmar Bergman.

Prime Minister's Office 23 July 2007 Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt's comments on the parliamentary election in Turkey "Yesterday's parliamentary election in Turkey is one of the most important in Europe in recent years. Developments in Turkey are of major importance to the EU and to the world at large. "According to the statements that have been made, the new government's policies will be characterised by increased democracy and continued political and economic reforms. This is a welcome and important condition for meeting the challenges that Turkey faces. "Sweden fully supports Turkey's continued path towards full membership of the EU. It is vital that the incoming government infuses new energy into the internal reform process that constitutes the basis of the membership negotiations."

Prime Minister's Office 23 April 2007 Statement by Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt on the death of Boris Yeltsin "When we remember Boris Yeltsin, we remember a person who played an important role in bringing down the Soviet dictatorship and who guided Russia in its first steps towards democracy. Without the contributions Yeltsin made at that time, it is likely that developments could have taken a very different turn." "As President, Boris Yeltsin also helped open up Russia for important market economy reforms. In a country where private ownership was previously forbidden or actively opposed, this was an effort that was neither easy nor unproblematic, but was utterly necessary."
