5 Selection Guide - Pasture Proven, Profit Driven Genetics Frame Score - Beginning with our sale in 2011, we no longer assign a numerical number to frame score. Frame score is the least consistent of any objectively measured trait. It is highly variable due to facilities, equipment used, and the way the animal is standing at the time. We have circled animals around to be re-measured and can seldom duplicate a measurement. In addition, measurements can vary widely due to environmental differences. Our fall bulls have posted an adjusted yearling frame score average almost a whole frame score lower some years, than our Spring bulls, and yet mature to the same size. This is due to the slower rate of growth of the fall bulls while on the cow. We now report frame score as Moderate (Mod.), Moderate minus (Mod.-), or Moderate plus (Mod. +). Moderate is our most frequent observation and will correspond to around a frame score 5 mature size. Bull Development: - Shown on the inside front cover are some Fall bulls making their way up one of our rough, rocky hills to the feed bunk. This is how we develop bulls into fit, athletic individuals capable of covering miles of rough country while servicing your cows. Dam information: The bottom line of each catalog lot lists information about that bull s dam. You will find dam age (birth year), actual weight and BCS (body condition score) - which are taken when her most recent calf was weaned - and her MPPA (most probable producting ability). Remember dam weights will not be comparable between our Spring and Fall calving herds due to environmental differences. Percentile Rank: Use the line right under the EPD listing to see where a specific bull s EPDs ranks vs bulls of his age, in the Red Angus breed. For example, if a bull has 10% under his CED EPD - that means he ranks in the best 10% of the breed for Calving Ease Direct when compared to similar aged animals. This can be an excellent tool when you are unfamiliar with Red Angus EPDs. Genomic Testing & EPD Accuracy: Every Red Angus bull in this sale has enhanced EPD accuracy due to genomic testing, which is indicated by the RA50K located in the catalog beneath each bull s name and to the right of his registration number. For many traits, genomic testing provides the same amount of data as a bull s first year s natural service calf crop. This is especially valuable for carcass and reproductive traits where phenotypes are measured later in progeny s life. Mushrush Red Angus invests in DNA testing so that our bull customers can make the best informed decisions possible. We know that genomic testing will move some bull s EPDs up while moving others down - but they will all be more accurate (closer to the animal s true genetic merit) because of genomic testing. Along with enhanced EPD accuracy, parental validation is another benefit of genomic testing. Unless otherwise indicated, all bulls in this sale are DNA verified to both sire and dam to the greatest extent possible. At this time, genomic testing for EPD s of hybrid cattle (RA X SM in our case) is unreliable and is not used for our RA x SM bulls. However, all RA x SM hybrid bulls have been DNA tested for parental validation. Trichomoniasis Testing: The chance that you will infect your cow herd with Trich by purchasing a bull from any reputable seedstock provider is almost nonexistent. However, to combat this costly disease many states are ramping up testing requirements for animals entering from other states. Therefore we made the decision to perform a Trichomoniasis PCR test on every bull in the sale. This will assure that you can bring your trailer sale day and get your purchases home without testing delays. Sortable Spreadsheet: Refer to the sortable catalog data on our web site and this catalog for the most accurate and up to date information on our sale cattle, rather than the Red Angus web site. Programmers at RAAA have not addressed some of the issues that may reflect differences between most current data and what they have displayed. If you have any questions, don t hesitate to call us. We will make every effort to give you the information you need. -3-

6 Selection Tools - Using EPDs After making a visual appraisal we highly recommend you use EPDs to determine which bulls best fit your production goals. It must be remembered that actual weights and measurements cannot be used to compare individuals across contemporary groups, let alone across herds. A contemporary group is simply a group of calves of same sex, similar age and identical management, e.g., calves that have had equal opportunity to perform. All actual weights, including birth weight, can be affected by environment, feed, age of dam, and even at what point they are taken. For that reason do not compare adjusted or actual weights between our Spring and Fall born bulls or cows. Consider the following: If we scanned our bulls at 18 months and published actual REA of impressive size. Does this make these bulls genetically superior for Rib Eye Area? No! It is scientifically proven that cold weather prior to calving will increase birth weight. Are these cattle genetically predisposed to higher birth weight? No! In the Flint Hills of Kansas, fall calves winter extremely hard. The grass is at its lowest protein (4%) and the weather can be very harsh. On the other hand, spring born calves hit their stride about the time green grass starts growing. They traditionally will have higher weaning weights when compared to the fall born calves using identical genetics. Consequently it is common for our Spring born calves to wean heavier than our fall born calves due to environment. Does this mean our spring born bulls will sire calves with higher weaning weights than our Fall born bulls? No! For the reasons stated above, it would be misleading for us (or any seedstock provider) to promote individual animals using actual data. Comparisons made across contemporary groups using actual or adjusted data can be inaccurate and could lead to selection or culling errors. To accurately compare across contemporary groups and across herds, EPDs are your best tools!!!! A common misconception is that EPDs will tell us which is best. EPDs are merely an estimate of each animal s genetic merit for the traits represented. It is up to producers to determine which is the best fit for their operation. The EPD profile that works best for my herd and management situation may not necessarily be the best fit for your environment, herd composition, management style or marketing strategy. By correctly using EPDs we can each determine which animal best fits our programs, or moves them in a direction we want to go. The key to using EPDs is knowing what you have, what you need, and making selections accordingly. Also remember that EPDs predict relative performance not actual performance. On average, calves from a high accuracy +90 YW EPD bull are expected to weigh 20 pounds more than calves from a high accuracy +70 pound YW EPD bull at one year of age. Whether they express this added weight depends on if the environment or management, including feed availability, allows them to. Back by Popular Demand The Mushrush Red Angus Bull Warranty Optional protection against injury or death of your bull Coverage is good for a period of 5 months following purchase. Cost is 5% of the purchase price paid at settlement. Details and limitations available at checkout. In the event your bull is permanently injured or dies, you receive credit towards purchase of another bull in the amount of the original purchase price minus any salvage. Example: You purchase a bull for $4000 at the March 18, 2016 sale and buy the warranty for $200. He gets injured on May 31st. You sell him and get a credit for $4000 minus what he brought when you sold him. If he died it would have been $4000 credit towards your replacement bull purchase. -4-

8 Age-Advantage Red Angus Bulls Lot 1 - MUSHRUSH CLIFFTOP B308 What a bull to start the sale! B308 has performance in every part of his pedigree. A red angus database search reveals only two bulls in the breed that have a spread from 9 CED to 153 YW and B308 is one of them. His young mppa dam has an excellent udder and a bright future in our herd. We think enough of B308 that we used him in our fall herd this winter. He was working 45 days before the sale and still has the look of a herd sire. 1 MUSHRUSH CLIFFTOP B MUS : B308 1A (100%) # RA50K act. 51 Selection Simplified- HerdBuilder & GridMaster Economic Selection indices for Commercial Cattlemen Two Red Angus economic selection indices are available to simplify the task of genetic selection. The HerdBuilder Index will move a typical commercial herd toward their goal of profitability through retention of replacement heifers and marketing steers. While, GridMaster will move resultant calf crops towards added value acheived through improved post-weaning performance and premium carcass merit. Both HerdBuilder & GridMaster are provided for each bull in our catalog along with the corresponding percentile rank which describes how each bull s indices compare vs. all non-parent Red Angus. For those already using EPDs for genetic selection, these indices may not be necessary for you. If you have avoided EPDs and have been relying on actual and adjusted data for your genetic selections, HerdBuilder and GridMaster may prove very beneficial as a means of simplifying the volume of data. Remember if you use EPDs and indices simultaneously, you will be putting increased selection of the traits included in the formation of the index. Key Points for using HerdBuilder and GridMaster The purpose of an index is to estimate differences in an operation s overall profitability resulting from a sire-selection decision(s). EPD weightings which determine indicex values are not determined, or adjusted, using human perceptions but are completely based on science. While the process of calculating an index is very complex, the resulting selection tool is very simple to implement. Red Angus selection indices will provide producers with a user-friendly yet powerful selection tool built on a unbiased scientific data. Use the HerdBuilder Index if the selected sire will be used to generate replacement females. Use the GridMaster Index if you are not retaining replacement heifers from the selected sire. Moving ahead in 2016, the beef cattle business offers both challenges and opportunities. Lower feeder calf prices underscore the need to capture value-added premiums. Every cow-calf producer with high-end genetics and a solid health program wants to sell their cattle above the average market price, which is exactly why Top Dollar Angus was created. Top Dollar Angus is a genetic certification and marketing company focused exclusively on the best Angus and Red Angus-infl uenced feeder calves in the industry. Qualified calves must contain at least two generations of Angus or Red Angus genetics with growth and carcass traits ranking in the top 25% of their respective breed. Should you consider Top Dollar Angus certification for your calves? Absolutely YES! If you ve consistently invested in high-performing Angus or Red Angus genetics, we can make your calf crop stand out from the pack, and give you access to the Top Dollar Angus premium calf-buyer network, regardless of how you market your cattle (local auction, video, or direct trade). Our goal is to bring more demand to your doorstep. Red Angus sires that have a GridMaster Index in the top 25% of the breed or higher meet Top Dollar Angus specifications. Look for bulls in this catalog with a GridMaster Index between the Top 1% and Top 25% This new program is similar to Certified Angus Beef, except that Top Dollar Angus does its branding in the feeder cattle and calf market. It works by certifying calf crops that meet program requirements on the farm or ranch, enabling these cattle to be marketed using the Top Dollar Angus brand name and logo. Top Dollar Angus feeder calves are eligible to receive a $50 per head premium (sometimes more) over the average market when sold to partner feedyards. One group of Top Dollar Angus steers sold recently via video auction for $67 per head above the average market for their weight and location. Another group was forward-sold for a $52 per head premium. Yet another single load of Montana steer calves beat the market by $57 per head. Why are so many profi t-minded cattle feeders interested in purchasing Top Dollar Angus calves and yearlings? It s because these cattle perform very well both in the feedyard and on value-based grids. Top Dollar Angus cattle consistently deliver rapid growth and high quality grades. That puts extra dollars in cattle feeders pockets, which are passed back to cow-calf producers in the form of premium prices. -49-

55 Oma Lou Mushrush wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away December 19, 2015 after a long illness. In the early days of Mushrush Red Angus when we sold all bulls private treaty, Oma Lou would drag all potential customers to her kitchen table where a deal would be made over a plate of warm cookies. Several long time customers have said they referred to their purchases as the cookie bulls. For years after the annual Mushrush Red Angus sale had become established, Oma Lou would be seen running down customers after the sale handing them bags of cookies - for the road. Oma Lou was also the backbone of what grew to be the largest Red Angus operation in Kansas and an international source for breeding genetics. In 2011, when Mushrush Red Angus was named the 2011 Seedstock Producer of the Year by the Beef Improvement Federation, Oma Lou said all the cold days of chopping ice in the winter and hot days of working in the summer were worth it to see what the ranch had developed into with her family. In honor of her, we will continue that tradition and will have the cookie table at the sale, and encourage you to stop by and take some for the road in memory of Oma Lou.
