2017 GVS&DD Environmental Management & Quality Control ANNUAL REPORT Andjela Knezevic-Stevanovic DIRECTOR ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT & QUALITY CONTROL, LIQUID WASTE SERVICES Utilities Committee July 12,

Environmental Management & Quality Control Annual Report Regulatory requirement Documents operational effectiveness, technical and regulatory performance of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) Assesses environmental health of water bodies that are receiving liquid waste discharges from Metro Vancouver Provides information to the public 2

Metro Vancouver s WWTPs 3 Secondary - freshwater discharge Lions Gate WWTP Annacis Island WWTP 2 Primary marine discharge Lulu Island WWTP Iona Island WWTP North Langley WWTP 3

Metro Vancouver s WWTPs Over 450 billion litres of wastewater treated in

WWTP Technical Performance About 196,000 analyses by Metro Vancouver laboratories alone Over 54,400 tonnes of suspended solids (TSS) and over 52,200 tonnes of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) removed Treatment efficiency met or exceeded expectations WWTP % BOD Reduction % TSS Reduction Iona Island Lions Gate Annacis Island Lulu Island Northwest Langley 95 94

WWTP Regulatory Performance WWTPs consistently met the Operational Certificate requirements 6

Biosolids Quality Monitoring 7

Effluent Toxicity Monitoring 8

Endocrine Disrupting Substances and Trace Organics Monitoring Included substances: Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) Surfactants Hormones and sterols Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) Phenolic compounds Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) 9

Beach Monitoring Bacteriological water quality monitored at 41 beaches Bathing beaches met the primary-contact recreation guideline during the bathing beach season False Creek met the secondary-contact recreation guideline throughout the season No beach postings or closures issued by the Health Authorities 10

Receiving Environment Monitoring Comprehensive monitoring of environmental health of water, sediments and organisms in the vicinity of the WWTP outfalls Receiving water quality objectives and guidelines were largely met Monitoring results for sediment effects around two primary WWTP outfalls were similar to previous years 11

Ambient Environment Monitoring 2017 ambient environment monitoring programs: Strait of Georgia (water) Burrard Inlet (water and biota) Fraser River (water) Boundary Bay (water) Comprehensive program review for Boundary Bay 12

Conclusions Metro Vancouver WWTPs operate in compliance with the applicable regulatory requirements Treatment plants meet performance expectations and consistently provide an ongoing benefit to the region by reducing contaminant loading to the environment Regional liquid waste discharges are effectively managed in a manner that is protective of human and aquatic life 13
