1 5 th June, World Environment Day World Environment Day is celebrated every year as an annual event by the people all across the world on 5 th of June for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment. WED is the opportunity for everyone to realize the responsibility to care for the Earth and to become agents of change. Through decades of WED celebrations, thousands of people from countries all over the world and from all sectors of society have participated in individual and organized environmental action. First time the world environment day was celebrated in the year 1972 at the Stockholm conference, Sweden and then started celebrating annually on global basis. Each year the world environment day is celebrated on different themes: the first theme in the year 1972 was One earth. Recent themes included are: 'Many Species. One Planet. One Future', 2010 Forests-Nature At Your Service, 2011 Green Economy: Does it include you?, 2012 Think.Eat.Save, 2013 Small Islands and Climate Change, 2014 This year s theme is Seven Billion Dreams; One Planet; Consume with Care'. The theme of this year s Day Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care, emphasizes the personal responsibility each person bears for enabling inclusive and sustainable economic development while stabilizing and reducing the rate of resource use. 5 June 2015 With many of the earth s ecosystems nearing critical tipping points, the United Nations invited each of the seven billion people on the planet to mark this year s World Environment Day by making one change towards a more responsible consumption of resources be it refusing to buy single-use plastic bags or riding a bike to work. Humanity continues to consume far more natural resources than the planet can sustainably provide, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in this year s message for the Day. It is time for us to change. Italy is the host of this year's celebrations which are taking place at Expo Milano 2015, which runs from 1 May to 31 October and is expected to include over 140 countries plus a significant number of international organizations. On this occasion, GCPC had conducted an in-house seminar at the committee room of GCPC in the presence of Dr. Bharat Jain (Member Secretary & ENVIS Coordinator, GCPC) and Mr. P.R Rathod (Programme Officer ENVIS GCPC). Ms. Divya Namboothiri (Information Officer, ENVIS) made a presentation on the theme wherein officials from GIDC, GIDB and GIZ were also present. Dr. Bharat Jain ENVIS coordinator shared his views on environment preservation by quoting an example relating the environment preservation and conservation activities to the olden religious customs and traditions. In the Plenary Discussion, the participants shared their

2 views on the environment preservation. The participants scrupulously discussed various activities for sustainable life style through which one can contribute their bit towards environment conservation like using bicycle for short distances, using public transport for the daily commute to the offices, by not wasting food and by ordering how much one can consume, by switching of the ACs when not in use, by unplugging the electronic appliances when not in use etc. Mr. Nitesh Patel, Junior Advisor, GIZ shared his view on the consumption of electricity. By saving one unit of electricity, it would in turn save 2.5 unit of electricity at generation (due to the transmission loss). He also said that one can save on a lot of electrical energy by using the electronic appliances such as ACs, Heaters etc wisely. At the end of the seminar, it was decided that all of the GCPC employees will sow a plant or tree. GCPC ENVIS has also brought out a recycled eco friendly - carrying bag and a recycled notepad for promotional purpose. Living sustainably is about doing more and better with less. It is about knowing that rising rates of natural resource use and the environmental impacts that occur are not a necessary by-product of economic growth. SEMINAR
