2 REPORT ON OZONE DAY CELEBRATION: 2016 ORGANIZED BY: GCPC-ENVIS CENTRE Date: 16 th September, 2016 Venue: GCPC-ENVIS Conference Hall, Gandhinagar 16 th September is the International Day for the Preservation of Ozone Layer. It was designated by the United Nations to commemorate a very important day in world history. In the year 1987 representatives from 24 countries met in Montreal Protocol and announced to the world that the time had come to stop destroying the ozone layer. Countries from over the world committed themselves to rid the world of substances that threaten the ozone layer. On 19 th December, 1994 the United Nations General Assembly declared September 16 th as the International Day for the preservation of Ozone Layer, commemorating the date when the Montreal Protocol on Ozone Depleting Substances was signed in the year The Ozone Day was first celebrated on 16 th September,1995 and then it is celebrated yearly on this day. On the occasion of World Ozone Day 2016, Gujarat Cleaner Production Centre ENVIS Centre organized a programme as a part of the major activities at GCPC-ENVIS conference hall, Gandhinagar on 16 th September, The objective of celebrating World Ozone Day was to create awareness about the importance of ozone layer protection as it protects living beings on the earth from Ultra Violet (UV) radiation of the sun. The event witnessed participation of Dr. Bharat Jain, Member Secretary, GCPC and Coordinator, ENVIS, Shri Sudhir Trivedi, Rtd. Branch Manager, Union Bank of India, GCPC & GCPC-ENVIS Team members and students perusing Environment and Chemical Engineering from L.D. College of Engineering, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The inaugural session started with welcome speech from Shri P.R. Rathod, Programme Officer, ENVIS wherein he highlighted the objectives of celebrating programme. He also gave glimpse of the major pollutant for ozone layer depletion.
3 Ms. Priyanka Joshi, Information Officer, ENVIS continued the session making a theme based presentation on World Ozone Day, 2016 Ozone and Climate Restored by a World United (Working towards reducing global-warming HFCs under the Montreal Protocol). During her presentation, she mentioned the background of celebrating world ozone day including the importance of ozone layer protection and ways to prevent ozone layer depletion. she also brifed about the preventive measures required to reduce generation of pollutants and also gave good news about the healing of ozone hole. In final part, she encouraged participants to work together on phasing out Ozone Depleting Substances. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Bharat Jain, Member Secretary, GCPC and Coordinator, ENVIS shared his experience mentioning the present status of Ozone Layer. Dr. Bharat Jain, concluded the session requesting all the participants to create awareness on ozone layer conservation, environmental conservation, cleaner production and waste minimization for betterment of present and future generations. The programme concluded with group discussion by the participatns and poster presentation by GCPC-ENVIS team.
