Green Week The future of DRSS: Zero Waste We need to do this Together!

Day 1: What happens to the trash when you throw things AWAY? A. It disappears into thin air. B. It is taken away by aliens. C. It is breaks down in 5 to 10 years in the landfill. D. It sits in the landfill covered by layer upon layer of garbage and dirt breaking down extremely slowly (20 to 1000 years) giving off toxic gases to our environment.

Answer D is correct Well you probably got the previous question right! Great Job but what can we do about it?

Our Disposable Lives Part 1: the Trash at the curb Watch the following 6:15 minute video to better understand what happens to our trash. (from October 6 th ) Trash at the Curb When video starts click on screen to pause the video and then click channel button and select the second video

Day 2: What does our Waste look like here at DRSS?

Observe the following slides from the TAS (Throw Away System) These slides show some Proper and Improper waste leaving the cafeteria

One day, only 23 apples were placed in the Whole Fruit box.

That same day, digging through the compost bucket there were 40+ apples with anywhere from 1 to 6 bites out of them. Why?

That same day, 38 whole apples were found in the Compost (Some were perfect, some had multiple fork stab marks, bruising, or mutilation.) Why were they not placed in the whole fruit box?

This is what the Whole Fruit box looks like when used properly. If you want a whole fruit please help yourself!

TAS Liquid waste whole fruit/food silverware landfill Terracycle (5 bins) compost recycling

Why do we compact all of our materials, then throw it in the Landfill? Here is a zip lock bag filled with a few pieces of trash, some compostable items and terracycle?

We started the year with 456 forks The picture below shows what we had left before we added a Silverware container to the TAS - why do we throw away metal silverware?

Where is our Compost? Our Compost is behind the school near the Fitness Space Things that do not belong in the compost: - Plastic silverware - Styrofoam bowls - Ketchup packets - Plastic wrap/ packaging

Compost What goes in compost Orange, banana peels Napkins Brown bags Leftover food Veggies n fruits Apple What does not go in compost Meat Cheese Plastic bags Medical waste Styrofoam Plastic spoons and forks Before What it becomes Food Waste Becomes cultivated soil

Why does our compost bucket look like this at the end of lunch?

Terracycle Chip Bags Lunchable containers tray, plastic film and cardboard box Candy Bar wrappers Capris Sun pouches Energy bar and Granola Bar wrappers Little Bites GoGo Squeezes (NO Clear or white Plastic Packaging or Zip Lock Bags this is regular trash)

Day 3: How are we doing with our waste?

We currently throw away only 2 bags of trash less than 40 lbs. a day; 10 lbs. liquid waste; 12 lbs. recycling, 60 to 90 lbs. of compost and 2 lbs. of terracycle, whole fruit depends lbs 1, lbs 3, lbs Data collected 9/24/14 11/25/14

How close are we to Zero Waste? At DRSS we want to achieve Zero Waste.. Only 10% of waste going to the landfill. From the previous slide you see that we are at about 76% sustainable.. But 90% is considered Zero Waste So how do we get to Zero Waste?

OSU Football Stadium What is Zero Waste? Ohio Stadium has employed an innovative recycling program for several years. In Autumn 2011 Ohio State is taking bold steps to advance the program further. Ohio Stadium is the largest stadium in the world to attempt to move toward Zero Waste, which refers to diverting 90% of trash from the landfill by recycling and composting. Bins for recycling and composting are available throughout the stadium and all items purchased inside the stadium are either recyclable or compostable to achieve Zero Waste. Video on OSU's Zero Waste Mission

Loveland High School Another inspiration for Zero Waste Loveland High School just outside of Cincinnati has been working on having a Zero Waste Cafeteria for a while News Report of Zero Waste Cafeteria

Can DRSS Go Zero Waste? If OSU can have 100,000+ people be Zero Waste at a football game If Loveland HS can have a 1500 student cafeteria that is Zero Waste We here at DRSS can become Zero Waste also! We can be the first Zero Waste public school in Ohio, but it takes everyone being involved.

How can you get involved? Place waste in proper locations Follow the instruction and guidance of the TAS aids and Signs What does not belong in the other 5 containers ends up in the landfill trash Join the Green Team be hands and feet to make a cultural change at DRSS with our waste. sign up with name and address on Mr. Nelsons window or the Bulletin Board outside of the Cafeteria to get more information on how to get involved.

Bag it Bag It OFFICIAL TRAILER YouTube We will be having a showing of Bag It in the evening of December 18 th from 6:30 to 8:00 in the school cafeteria. Sign up next week on Monday through Wednesday Free Popcorn and Drink to all who bring their own Re-usable Cup and Bowl
