Modeling activity carried out in ARPA FVG for marine-coastal and transitional waters according with the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/CE Isabella Scroccaro ARPA FVG
Spatial scale EUROPE EASTERN ALPS Distretto idrografico HYDROGRAPHIC delle alpi orientali DISTRICT (WFD 2000/60/CE) The Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC establishes the quality objectives of water bodies: a good ecological status and good chemical status across European waters need to be achieved within 2015
Approach. Management oriented to achieve or maintain the good quality of the surface waters (Water Framework Directive 2000/60/CE) an updated pattern of the SUSTAINABILITY World Commission on Environment and Development
Analysis approach. The DPSIR Framework Based on EEA 1998: Guidelines for Data Collection and Processing - EU State of the Environment Report. Annex 3. Background issues: Climate change Water pollution Urbanization Environmental education
The DIPSR assessment framework RESPONSE DRIVERS Policies and goals Causes PRESSURES IMPACT Health, Ecosystems, materials Pollutants STATE Quality
Water bodies classification: Pressures/impacts analysis Punctual water pollution (discharges/accidents) Widespread water pollution Nitrates from agriculture Phytosanitary products Pollutants from traffic/depositions/surface washing-out Marine sediments
WFD 2000/60/CE water bodies tipologies for marine and transitional waters
Marine-Coastal Waters Classification and monitoring for shellfish breeding D.G.R. 124/2010 Zona A Zona B Zone precluse The mandatory parameters necessary for the compliance to law are those related to: pathogen microorganisms, toxic micro algae, specific chemical substances
Marine-Coastal Waters Classification and monitoring for bathing 55 stations for the sampling every 15 days from April to September Publication of the results on web-gis Since 2006 even toxic algae (Ostreopsis spp)
Modeling activity for regional coastal-marine and transitional waters carried out in ARPA FVG Modeling may be used as a technical tool with high scientific content to support the evaluation of the water quality classification and the achievement of the objectives through specific measures In general, the aim of these modeling applications, has been to identify the external critical factors (pressure sources) that may condition the water quality
Tools Finite Element Model SHYFEM, developed at ISMAR-CNR in Venice 2D and 3D version: Hydrodynamic Model Dispersion module Other modules (e.g.: temperature and salinity, sediment transport, water quality, etc.) Experimental Data, provided by ARPA FVG and other sources
Model implementation Implementation of the finite element grid for the case study (SHYFEM model) Assembly of data for model boundary conditions and model testing Ad hoc modifications of the code if necessary Test simulations with idealized conditions and simulations with real conditions Checking of model results with experimental data coming from monitoring activities
