4 Kusile Power Station Construction of Eskom s new Kusile Power Station, near Emalahleni in Mpumalanga, is currently under way. It is South Africa s largest multibillion-rand construction project and, when completed, will be the fourth-largest coal-fired plant in the world. Kusile is an isindebele and siswati word, meaning the dawn has come, an appropriate name for a power station of such magnitude and cutting-edge technology. When completed, Kusile will comprise six units, each producing approximately 800 MW of installed capacity, giving a total output of MW. Kusile is also the first power station on the African continent to use wet flue-gas desulphurisation (WFGD) technology. WFGD is the current state-of-the-art technology that is used to remove oxides of sulphur (SOX), for example, sulphur dioxide (S02), from the exhaust flue gas in power plants that burn fossil fuels such as coal or gas. Eskom is fitting WFGD at the Kusile plant as an atmospheric emission abatement technology, in line with current international practice, so as to ensure compliance with air quality standards. This makes the plant far more environmentally friendly than plants with older technology, especially since the power station is situated in a priority air shed. Kusile is the first of the Generation fleet to install and operate this technology. On 10 March 2017, the Kusile Power Station Project reached another major milestone, following the initial synchronisation of Kusile Unit 1 on 26 December Synchronisation initiates a sequence of testing activities, leading to a commercial operation level that begins with post-synchronisation testing. This is followed by the combustion optimisation process to support the initial full load. Kusile Unit 1 is in the final stages of the combustion optimisation phase. Achieving full load means running the unit at the full design and operating capacity. For Kusile Unit 1, the full load-generating capacity is 800 MW. Kusile Unit 1 going full load is just one more step closer to the ultimate goal of full commercial operation. While Kusile Unit 1 is moving towards going into full load operation, the construction and commissioning activities on the remaining Kusile units, Unit 2 to Unit 6, continue to progress uninterruptedly as a result of the drive for early completion.

5 It is South Africa s largest multibillion-rand construction project. Kusile is a coal-fired power station close to the Kendal Power Station in the Emalahleni Municipal Area of Mpumalanga. Kusile creates direct jobs and indirect jobs. Kusile Power Station The total value of the project is R161 billion, with a local impact of more than R10 billion of investment in adjoining communities. Kusile will directly grow South Africa s GDP by approximately 0,35% per year (~R14 billion) The power station will consist of six units, each producing approximately 800 MW of installed capacity, giving a total of MW Approximately meals are provided weekly. Caring for people A workforce of ± people is transported by bus to site. Potable water is made available at easily accessible points all around the project work space. Five dining halls are provided, where workers can eat in comfort. Accommodation is provided to over employees. A safety culture exists, which ensures that everybody gets to and from work safely. HIV screening and counselling, chronic disease management, primary health care, and emergency services are provided. Easily accessible hygiene facilities are made available close to the workspace.
