Tour de France 2014: The Grand Départ Environmental Impacts Philippe Pernstich, Carbon Trust
ABOUT ME I have been with the Carbon Trust for nearly six years, working primarily on carbon footprinting of products, value chains, organisations and events. Prior to joining the Carbon Trust, I worked on carbon offsetting projects and in traffic control systems. I hold an MSc and BSc in Environmental Sciences from University of East Anglia Outside work, I keep bees and bake bread to enjoy with my honey.
The Drive for Sustainable Events International prestige events are increasingly focusing on minimising environmental impacts Scale inevitably involves pressures on sustainability, but also brings big potential for improvements Reputational brand risk when things go wrong Host venues competing on sustainability credentials
Measuring the Impact of the Grand Depart Key Issues Impacts Methodology Scope Data
What Impacts to measure? Climate change (GHG emissions) Waste Water (consumption and quality) Air quality Soil pollution Ecological impact
Methodology No standard approach for measuring event environmental impacts eventimpacts toolkit developed by UK Sport and a number of other agencies quantitative and qualitative assessment guidance London 2012 Olympics methodology has served as template for many subsequent events Owned, Shared and Associated emissions to account for degree of control over impacts
The Scope of the Assessment Need to define clear boundaries Space Time Responsibility Selected scope criteria: Events directly associated with Grand Départ 2014 Within Leeds City Council s boundaries At least partially within Leeds CC s control
Scope Assessed Associated Hub catering Spectator transport Shared Owned TdF Village power Promotional material Race caravan Power to hubs Waste Team Presentation event Pre-race dinner Volunteer uniforms
Waste Assessment Results 1.5t of waste collected and recycled on race day 3.5t of waste removed along route and landfilled in the run-up to the event Survey showed 50% of spectators felt there were no recycling facilities during the event
Carbon Assessment Results 1600 Grand Départ 2014 Carbon Impact (tco 2 e) Owned Shared Associated Spectator transport Hub catering Race caravan Promotional material TdF village power Volunteer uniforms Pre-race dinner Team presentation event Waste Power supplied to hubs
Measured Impact Potential Legacy Benefits As the world s most prestigious cycle race, can the Tour de France enthuse spectators to switch transport modes? 37% of spectators wanted to take up more cycling 1,290 tco 2 e 9,600 tco 2 e Potential Legacy Savings
A Legacy for Future Events Sustainable Events Toolkit developed for Leeds CC Guidance for sustainability thinking at all stages of an event s life cycle Background Activities Pre-Qualification Bidding Preparation Hosting Post-Event
Philippe Pernstich Carbon Trust
Grand Depart Economic and Social Impacts Simon Brereton, Leeds City Council
TdF Economic and Social Impacts How we measured the impact What the numbers said Beyond the numbers!
How we measured the impact (1) Spectator survey 4,200 interviews Where are you from? How much have you spent? Multiply results by crowd numbers = spend over the weekend
How we measured the impact (2) Business survey 700 interviews Uplift in sales over 6 months Scale up to reflect broader economy Other studies UKTI Festival of Business Omnibus survey
What the numbers said 3.8m spectators 128m economic impact 102m of that in Yorkshire 90% awareness in UK 42% watched on TV/internet 7% were there in person 27% inspired to cycle more 26% are more likely to visit Yorkshire in next 2 years
Beyond the numbers Social: Community involvement People power Economic: Collaboration business/community Shared future Environment: A day with no cars Pride in the beauty of Yorkshire
