Giro di Burnaby 2017 Now in its 10th year, the Giro di Burnaby is one of the city s biggest and best sporting events attracting thousands of spectators each year.

2 Giro di Burnaby 2017 Now in its 10th year, the Giro di Burnaby is one of the city s biggest and best sporting events attracting thousands of spectators each year. The year 2017 is also a significant one for a few other reasons: It s Burnaby s 125 and Canada s 150 birthdays. While Burnaby has quite a few activities planned for its 125 birthday, the Giro remains one of the city s most dynamic experiences and promises to be bigger and better than ever. This year s tour de force cycling event returns to the Burnaby Heights neighbourhood on Thursday, July 13 as part of BC Superweek Canada s biggest professional road cycling series. Crowds numbering in the thousands are expected to gather for the 2017 Giro di Burnaby to watch as some of the world s top female and male cyclists race through our streets. Sponsorship packages for local businesses are available at various levels. Advertising and marketing opportunities could include banner space, online and print promotions, website and social media presence, along with local and provincial media coverage of the event. 2

5 The Race The Giro di Burnaby made its debut in 2006 in the Burnaby Heights neighbourhood. The brainchild of City Councillor Pietro Calendino, this event was named in tribute to Burnaby s vibrant Italian community and the world-famous Giro d Italia now more than a century old. Since then, the Giro di Burnaby has grown exponentially both in size and reputation. Giro s 2016 event, saw almost 300 men and women completing this race to crowds of more than 7,000. The 1.14-kilometre course The Giro s 1.14-kilometre closed circuit loop makes it one of the most exciting races among the BC Superweek race series with riders whizzing by at speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour. The women s event comprises 40 laps totaling 45.6 kilometres, while the men s race consists of 50 laps for a total of 57 kilometres.
