3 The vocation of CODEGAZ CODEGAZ is a non-political, non-religious association for providing development aid. It was founded in 1989 by Gaz de France employees and has been a French State-approved association since The mission of CODEGAZ is to fight poverty and inequality, within a sustainable development framework. The aid provided is part of a long-term vision, involving the transfer of skills to beneficiary populations. The aim is to ensure the sustainability of projects so that, over the long-term, those populations are able to take them over completely. The association s principles INTEGRATED DEVELOPMENT CODEGAZ starts from an identified need and then expands its vision to take in all related issues, bringing together the various skill sets within the association. THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY* Whenever it is possible, to respond to the isolation of populations and the scarcity of resources, CODEGAZ deploys projects that are in synergy with one another, ensure optimal resource management and exploitation, generate economic development while reducing environmental impact, and have the goal of making beneficiaries self-reliant. The association s approach CODEGAZ is aimed at disadvantaged populations, respecting their culture and natural environment, without imposing conditions. It involves those people in the projects it deploys, meeting their needs for a better life. At the same time, CODEGAZ informs GDF SUEZ employees about the reality of those populations, and on the contributions employees could make to give them practical assistance. Once it has examined the compliance of a suggested project (coming from an outside source or identified by an active member), CODEGAZ sets up a partnership agreement with the body representing the beneficiary population. The Association s Board of Governors assigns appropriate delegations to the project leader and his/her team. * The circular economy is grounded in the principle that what some people produce is useful to others, and what some people throw away provides material that can be used by others; there is complementarity in what is produced, with the emergence of cooperative organizational models or those of groupings, management committees or social enterprises. 1 CODEGAZ brochure- may2014

They cover many fields: agro-nutrition, water and sanitation, energy production, with emphasis on local, natural resources (solar power, wind energy, biomass, etc.), building (schools, health clinics, etc.), and help bring together several aspects of development. Through their training and career paths, volunteer workers are able to encourage and support the development of social entrepreneurship, cooperatives, and all other forms of good governance. 6 Water and sanitation Well - Sri Lanka T he access to water in sufficient quantities and of acceptable quality, together with access to sanitation, is a vital need from which more than one billion people in disadvantaged countries do not benefit; 80% of them are in rural environments. Since CODEGAZ was founded, its priority action has been to carry out projects, mainly in Asia and Africa, which deploy the following techniques: borehole drilling, wells, pumps, water supply networks, water basins, spring catchments, water tanks, drainage pipes, latrines, and filtration systems. filtration. 7 Agro-nutrition Spirulina - Madagascar SRI- Burkina Faso C ODEGAZ decided to promote two innovative solutions that help treat malnutrition. It takes part in carrying out pilot programs to provide information about the techniques, favor the spread of their use, and provide training to local populations. System of Rice Intensification(SRI) SRI was discovered by chance during a year of drought in Madagascar, which led to a major change in rice-growing techniques. The amount of rice harvested that year was observed to have increased by a factor of 2 to 6. Since then, the SRI technique has proved its effectiveness: it significantly increases agricultural yields, improves the ecological impact of rice growing on the environment, and favors the economic development of the regions concerned. CODEGAZ plans to expand its SRI programs to other countries where it operates. Spirulina 842 million people in the world suffer from malnutrition (source: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) CODEGAZ has proposed a sustainable solution to the problem : SPIRULINA. Spirulina is a microscopic alga with exceptional nutritional properties. It is composed of 55% to 70% proteins, vitamins B, beta-carotene, iron and calcium. It is cultivated in fresh-water basins by local populations. 8 Acces to education and health care Centre de soins Inde Centre de soins Inde Health care center - India INDIA : 2 health clinics for every inhabitant and prevention facilities for schoolchildren C ODEGAZ carries out various types of action: building school classrooms and premises (canteens, libraries, etc.), supplying school furniture and materials, and photovoltaic electrical power to schoolrooms. The association also assists in the professional training of young adults, in teaching literacy, and in providing social support to adults, especially women. Along with its local partners, CODEGAZ also helps to give access to health care: building and/or renovating several health centers in Africa and Asia, and supplying diversified medical materials. It calls on volunteer health workers to carry out medical consultations of sick people and/or pregnant women. It acts in three different ways: - Action in favor of street children: the goal is to save as many as possible children in such a precarious and dangerous situation. 10 Renewable energy Solar cooking Burkina faso Bio digester- Madagascar E ven today, 1.4 to 2 billion human beings do not have collective or individual access to electricity, according to estimations by the World Bank. About 85% of current-less people live in remote rural areas, far from existing electrical grids, mainly in Africa but also in Southeast Asia. Paradoxically, those regions abound in natural resources such as hydrocarbons, coal, river water and sunshine. CODEGAZ encourages the use of renewable energy sources in projects for accessing energy. It implements photovoltaic facilities in schools to enable pupils to study after nightfall, and in homes for improving beneficiaries living conditions. To put a stop to deforestation, fight poisoning related to wood burning, combat mortality, and improve villagers living conditions, CODEGAZ deploys programs for installing solar cookers or improved cooking stoves for a large number of families. For the same purpose, it carries out experiments on the benefits of domestic biogas for Malagasy families. Those populations are trained in ecological farming methods and have bio-digesters, so they benefit from clean energy for cooking and for lighting their homes for several hours, and thus make energy savings. 11 Emergency Humanitarian Action (Helping victims of humanitarian disasters) CODEGAZ is equipped with a post-emergency operational center, which has been called upon during several humanitarian disasters. Since 1999, it has helped in necessary reconstruction efforts by supplying equipment (in France, Algeria, Romania and Madagascar) and medicine (in Iran and Sri Lanka). It took action to help victims of food crises (in Niger). More recently, it took part in the reconstruction of shelters and training premises in Haiti and of sanitation systems in Sri Lanka.
