APRIL 23 RD RAFFLES HOTEL PHNOM PENH Promoting sustainable and environmental friendly business practices in Cambodia
OUR MISSION Preserving Khmer traditional craft & silk-related skills while promoting economic integration of local rural youth through education and employment opportunities
REVIVING KHMER ARTS & CRAFTS
TIMELINE Creation of the Chantiers-Ecoles de Formation Professionnelle A 3-year EU program gives birth to Artisans Angkor project Creation of Artisans Angkor as a limited company Largest employer of the region of Siem Reap About 5000 families are indirect beneficiaries of Artisans Angkor s development
MAIN MISSIONS Since its creation, Artisans Angkor has strived to: Revive Khmer Arts & Crafts, including silk fabrics and garments Offer free and compensation training and employment opportunities in Siem Reap rural province Improve social conditions and contribute to poverty alleviation by providing fair compensation packages and lifelong training
Artisans Angkor is a a social business that strives to "meet the needs of the present world without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs". Quotation from Brundtland Report on the definition of "sustainable development (Oct. 1987)
ECONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY Since 2005, the company is totally self-financed and intends to remain so. Today, Artisans Angkor employs about 1200 people, including over 800 artisans, in 48 workshops in Siem Reap region. Artisans Angkor s financial and economic sustainability make it possible for all employees to get durable jobs and social advantages. It thus allows poverty alleviation in the Siem Reap rural villages.
THROUGH LONG-TERM REINVESTMENT As Artisans Angkor was created on the model of a social business, the shareholders who invested in it do not receive any dividends on the profits. Artisans Angkor s profits are reinvested in the development of the company, such as the opening of workshops in rural villages, set up of new trainings, lifelong training sessions, healthcare, etc.
CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSABILITY The company is in full compliance with Labour law: 3% of our craftsmen are people with disabilities Gender equal opportunity (60% women) Also, beside a wage level higher than average, employees benefits from: Private insurance 24 h/7 + NSSF Medical welfare and easy access to healthcare Child care and canteen Solidarity funds
VOCATIONAL TRAINING Artisans Angkor regularly trains new apprentices in the Arts & Craft sector. The apprenticeship last 6 to 12 months. It is free of charge and compensated. It grants them the status of true craftsmen after completion of their training. Since 2012, over 260 young people aged 18 to 25 years-old from Siem Reap rural areas were trained by Artisans Angkor.
LIFELONG TRAINING Regular training sessions on first-aid and on use of fire extinguishers are held on an annual basis to ensure that remote rural workshops are as safe as the others. Artisans Angkor has a Quality and Sustainable Development department which aims at ensuring the maximum safety of employees and workplaces.
HEALTHCARE Artisans Angkor is dedicated to improve life conditions of its employees by providing them free access to medical care. A permanent doctor and 3 nurses take care of Artisans Angkor s employees on a permanent basis. They visit the rural workshops twice a month. There also are two annual visits of specialist doctors thanks to our partnership with a French volunteer medical NGO.
EMPOWERING FUTURE GENERATIONS Artisans Angkor is deeply committed to the promotion of education, for both its employees and also for their families. Several of our partnerships with local NGOs are meant to extend empowerment to our employees families. Example: the artisans children benefit from public reading and books put at their disposal by an NGO promoting education and literacy.
ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY PRODUCTS Artisans Angkor has made an enduring commitment to environmental principles in its business operations. All our lacquer products are made using hydro-varnish which is safe for the health and is environment-friendly, as proven by its compliance with European standards ( REACH legislation ).
ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY ACTIONS At the Angkor Silk Farm, a natural waste water treatment system was set up to purify wash and dyed water through phytoremediation. Treated water can then be used again for local farming or dyeing process.
