8 3) Cell phones Old mobile telephones should also go into the RBRC box (in California this is mandatory) as Universal Waste. You do not have to remove the battery from the phone. Make sure you put a date on the box when you first start putting cell phones into it. As with other universal wastes, you have one (1) year before you must send the box to RBRC for recycling. 4) Alkaline/Dry Cell batteries These include all AAA, AA, B, C, D, 9-volt, lantern, button cell (e.g., hearing aid), lithium camera batteries and other batteries that cannot be recharged. These kinds of batteries may be thrown away except in California. In California, if you do not already have a separate container specifically labeled for waste alkaline batteries, contact Veolia at Veolia will send an alkaline battery container with a pre-paid shipping label that can be shipped via common carrier when full. The container must be stored in the Hazardous Waster Accumulation Area. When you receive the container, make sure you put a date somewhere on the container as soon as you put the first used battery in it. You can store the batteries for up to one (1) year before you must send the container to Veolia for recycling. 5) Fluorescent light bulbs These are old 8-foot, 4-foot, U-tube, twisty, HID and other mercury-containing lights. Even green cap fluorescent light bulbs fall under this program and cannot be thrown away. If you do not already have boxes or containers for old fluorescent bulb storage, contact our national vendor, Veolia at Veolia s containers can be shipped via common carrier using the pre-paid shipping label on the box itself. Light bulb containers must be stored in the Hazardous Waste Accumulation Area. When you receive the Veolia fluorescent light box, be sure to put a date somewhere on the box as soon as you put the first used light bulb in it. As with other universal wastes, you have one (1) year to send the container back to Veolia. Broken fluorescent lamps that are substantially intact may be placed in the fluorescent lamp box. Small pieces from broken fluorescent lamps 9including the white powder from with the lamp) must be collected following spill cleanup procedures, bagged in a hazardous waste bag and placed into the toxic tote (Tote E). 6) Electronics Cathode ray tube devices (such as older computer monitors and televisions), LCD and plasma screen devices cannot be thrown away. For old store electronic equipment, contact IT Support for disposition information. For customer-returned, unrepairable televisions and similar electronics, contact Veolia at to determine the most cost-effective solution for packing and disposal.
9 7) Waste electronics should also be stored in the Hazardous Waste Accumulation Area. Note: In California, disposal of small electronic items such as VCRs, radios, microwaves, etc. must also be handled through Veolia. Before disposing of any store electronic equipment, be sure to check with IT Support to verify whether the items can be redeployed elsewhere. 8) Gasoline and gas/oil mix Waste gasoline and gas/oil mix must be removed from returned products such as lawnmowers and chainsaws. The waste gasoline must be stored in the Hazardous Waste Accumulation Area or the store s flammable storage cabinet (if so equipped). Review gasoline handling procedures in the SHC Gasoline Storage and Handling Policy. Questions If you have any questions regarding policies/procedures that are addressed in this document contact your District Coach. If you have any Hazardous Waste Identification, Storage and Disposal questions, send a Help Ticket to Category Loss Prevention and Sub Category Environmental Health and Safety or call Environmental Affairs at ENV-SEARS.
