WATER STORAGE SOLUTIONS Installation Guide - September 2017
NO WATER? NO PROBLEM! SIMPLY CHOOSE THE SYSTEM THAT BEST WORKS FOR YOU 01 RAINWATER HARVESTING The installation of a tank that is filled automatically when it rains. This will require the installation of suitable guttering and piping to transport rainwater to the tank. Free & unlimited water supply (when it rains) Store rainwater accessed from roof Rainwater filtered prior to entering tank Water suitable for irrigation, washing, topping up the pool etc. 02 MUNICIPAL BACK UP The installation of a tank that is filled automatically when mains water is available. This water can then be utilised in the event of a cut-off from mains supply. Uninterrupted water supply Tank filled with municipal water Pump from tank back into mains Pressure sensor starts and stops pump operation Water fit for consumption 03 FULLY INTEGRATED The installation of a tank that is filled with both Rainwater and Municipal water. This water is filtered/sterilised and utilised for full domestic water supply. Combination of both Municipal Back Up & Rainwater Harvesting Ensures water is always available Tank filled with municipal water (pre-determined min. level required) and rainwater (remaining space)
SOURCE REQUIREMENTS USES
RAINWATER HARVESTING FOR A BASIC SYSTEM YOU WILL REQUIRE THE FOLLOWING: TANK Standard tank fittings (inlet/overflow and outlet) are included in the price. BASE/PLINTH PRE-FILTRATION 3a. Mesh/Tank Screen - beneath lid 3b. Rainhead i.e. Leaf Eater 3c. First Flush Diverter 5 6 ELBOW mm TAP - 20 mm Purchase separately from dealer and an additional 40/20 reducer is then also required to fit it onto the tank. Note: This is an example of a basic Rainwater Harvesting installation. Each installation will vary based on the setup and personal preference. 4 PIPES - 3 x 110 mm SV pipes Lengths will vary depending on installation. 4a. From bottom of T-junction to slow release control valve. 4b. From side of T-junction to the elbow. 4c. From elbow through lid into the tank. THE BENEFITS It is simple, easy and offers advantages like self-sufficiency and the convenience of not being dependent on regulated water resources. It presents the opportunity to replace high quality drinking water with Rainwater, for low grade uses such as toilet flushing, irrigation, household cleaning and car washing. As a result you will save water, reduce your water bill and have access to an adequate water supply when none is available.
SYSTEM COMPONENTS
PRE-INSTALLATION INSTALLATION CHOOSE A TANK How to estimate what size tank would be sufficient for Rainwater Harvesting: Roof p/m² Tank Size L L L L The biggest downfall of Rainwater Harvesting is lack of storage capacity. TANK PLACEMENT Should preferably be at a downpipe, or alternatively be repositioned by use of proper piping/guttering. BASE/FOUNDATION OPTIONS Tanks must be installed on a sound, level and smooth surface. Level paving will suffice, or a properly designed tank stand. Alternatively a concrete plinth needs to be built, ideally with a concrete surface bed at least 85mm thick. Recommended base sizes are: Tank Diameter Base 750 L 760 mm 860 mm 1500 L 1410 mm 1510 mm 2200 L 1420 mm 1520 mm 2500 L 1420 mm 1520 mm 5000 L 1820 mm 1920 mm L 2200 mm 2300 mm 1. BASE/CONCRETE PLINTH Ensure tank is installed on a suitable base. The base must be sound, level, smooth, free of any protrusions and at least 100mm wider than the base of the tank (refer to pre-installation). 4. FIRST FLUSH DIVERTER Install the first flush diverter as per instructions provided inside packaging. Note: the first flush utilizes a dependable ball & seal system, requiring no manual intervention. 01 RAINWATER HARVESTING
Select desired pre-filtration options. Pre-filtration will differ depending on preference and what the water will be used for. a. Ensure the tank screen is fitted beneath the lid of the tank. b. Fit the leaf eater to the downpipe vertically or horizontally). 5. CUT A HOLE IN THE TANK LID 6. RECOMMENDATION 2. SELECT PRE-FILTRATION 3. TANK SCREEN/ LEAF EATER Cut a hole of 110.5mm in the middle of the lid and fit the pipe through the hole, stopping before the mesh/tank screen. Install an additional elbow and pipe to the overflow, and route to a suitable/required area to ensure no water goes to waste.
MUNICIPAL BACK UP FOR A BASIC SYSTEM YOU WILL REQUIRE THE FOLLOWING: TANK Standard tank fittings (inlet/overflow and outlet) are included in the price. BASE/PLINTH PUMP PIPES - 3 X 110 mm SV pipes Assumed ¾ inch galvanized pipes 4a. 25 mm diameter (minimum) - from tank to gate valve, to pump. 4b. 20 mm diameter (minimum) - from pump to house, to cut into mains ELBOWS Sizes according to pipes GATE VALVES To isolate components and manage the system. NON-RETURN VALVES FLOAT VALVE To control the fill height of the tank. Note: This is an example of a basic Municipal Back Up installation. Each installation will vary based on the setup and personal preference. 4c. Supply tank with municipal feed to float valve at the top of tank. It is advised to make use of a plumber/ professional installer as it is required to tie into the buildings main water supply line. THE BENEFITS Municipal Back Up offers you a pressured water feed solution, providing you with an uninterrupted water supply at all times. The best way to avoid the inconvenience of water interruptions is by installing a Municipal Back Up system. This offers you a chance to reduce your reliance on regulated water, with the added bonus that you still have access to clean water and no additional filtration is needed (like rainwater harvesting).
SYSTEM COMPONENTS
PRE-INSTALLATION INSTALLATION CHOOSE A TANK How to estimate what size tank would be sufficient for Municipal Back Up: People Litres p/day Size of tank = litres p/day X total days back up required i.e. 4 x people (600L) X 3 days = 1800L TANK PLACEMENT Should be placed where municipal supply can be intercepted, before entering the house. 4. SUPPLY TANK WITH WATER Supply the tank with municipal feed to float valve at the top of the tank. When full, the float valve will close the water supply and when it drops it will open and allow the tank to be filled. 02 MUNICIPAL BACK UP
5. FILL THE TANK 6. RECOMMENDATION 2. PLUMBING - TANK TO PUMP 3. PLUMBING - PUMP TO HOUSE Use minimum of 25mm diameter pipe from the tank, to the gate valve, to the pump. Connect the pump to the electrical main supply. a. Use minimum 20mm pipe from pump to cut into mains (where possible), before PRV valve. b. Install a non-return valve (between house and mains) to ensure no back pressure to mains. Ensure that the gate valve is open and fill the tank from municipal supply. It is recommended that the water is run once every two weeks to rotate the water and ensure system functions properly.
FULLY INTEGRATED FOR A BASIC SYSTEM YOU WILL REQUIRE THE FOLLOWING: 1 TANK 7 Standard tank fittings (inlet/overflow and outlet) are included in the price BASE/PLINTH PRE-FILTRATION 3a. Mesh/Tank Screen - beneath lid 3b. Rainhead i.e. Leaf Eater 3c. First Flush Diverter PUMP PIPES - 3 x 110 mm SV pipes For more detail see Rainwater Harvesting Components Page. PIPES - for Municipal Back Up For more detail see Municipal Back Up Components Page. THE BENEFITS ELBOWS 7a. 110 mm 7b. Sizes according to pipes GATE VALVES To isolate components and manage the system. NON-RETURN VALVES FLOAT VALVE To control the fill height of the tank. FILTER/STERILISATION To improve the quality of water used from the tank. The water needs to be filtered and sterilised as it is utilised for full domestic supply. Note: Each installation will vary based on the setup and personal preference. It is advised to make use of a plumber/ professional installer as it is required to tie into the buildings main water supply line. A Fully Integrated System provides you with Municipal Back Up, and the additional benefit of harvesting Rainwater (which is free and makes this system cost effective). A Fully Integrated System is a combination of both Rainwater Harvesting and Municipal Back Up. It provides you the benefit of reducing your reliance on regulated water (municipal back up), as well as saving water (rainwater harvesting), and still gives you access to an adequate water supply when there is none.
