3 BASIC INDICATORS Natural land area: 1,255 sq.km (0.39% of nationwide) Population (2005): 770,000 (0.90% of nationwide) Pop. density: 610 person per sq.km;. In central area: 11,000 person/sq.km Pop. growth rate: 1.9 % per year GDP per capita (2005): US$ 1,010 Economic growth rate: % per year Rate of poor households in 2005 (local standard): 12.26% Urbanization growth: 35%

5 SOCIAL AND NATURAL CONDITIONS 20% of the total land area is plain where 80% of population are living. Economic, industrial, health care facilities and etc. are located in urban areas. The city is very sensative to negative environmental impacts effecting on the coast, rivers, ponds, lakes, reserves, tourist areas, water resources and so on. The city s economic growth is rapid, but with insignificant contribution of the private sector, non-intensive services, high transport costs, small scale markets, unprofessional management skills of technical staff, dependence of the budget revenue on lands, and etc...

6 TRANSPORT SYSTEM Hue Hai Van Road Tunnel Tien Sa port NR 1A Station Bus station Airport National Roads: 2 ones with a length of 70 km. Road tunnel through Hai Van Pass: one of the longest tunnels in the Region. Urban roads: 277 km; Density: 1.31 km per sq. km (v.s km per sq. km in Ha Noi and 1.66 km per sq. km in HCMC.) 8 URBAN TRANSPORT Newly upgrading and improvement of roads. Using of radial transport roads for inner-urban transport, as a result in influences on environment, landscapes, traffic safety and etc. Almost all level crossings, automatically controlled; only 20 intersections with traffic lights; congestion at some intersections in peak hours. Concentration of traffics at fly-over areas due to natural conditions of rivers. Mixed traffic flows, as a result of difficulty in transport management and operation. 12 AIRPORTS, PORTS, CLUSTERED INDUSTRIAL ZONES IN THE CENTRAL AREA - Airports and ports play an essential role in the city development. However, it is difficult to expand them. And there is a restriction in environmental factors. - Due to the centre location of airports and access roads to the port, transport designs should be highly considered.
