2 1. INTRODUCTION This Material Safety Data Sheet applies exclusively to products manufactured or marketed by Amsterdam Fertilizers B.V. It does not apply to any other product of similar name or nature. 2. PRODUCT IDENTIFICATION NP / NPK fertilizers are fertilizers which do contain nitrogen. They may contain some or all of the following ingredients: - Single Superphosphate - Triple Superphosphate - Ammoniumsulfate - Ammoniumnitrate - Phosphate Rock - Potassiumchloride (Muriate of Potash) - Potassiumsulfate - inert fillers such as sand or limestone - coating materials, such as oil, amine, clay or talc - secondary nutrients and/or trace elements (such as copper sulphate, zinc oxide and sodium borate). UN Classification : not in hazardous category. Transport Classification : not applicable. 3. CHEMICAL & THERMAL PROPERTIES Stable under normal storage and handling conditions, neither combustible or supporters of combustion. If strongly heated during a fire sulphurdioxides and ammonia can evolve. 4. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Solid granules, crystals or powder, reddish brown, grey or off-white in colour with a bulk density around 1,000 kg/m3. Partially soluble in water and hygroscopic. 5. HEALTH HAZARDS Products are of a low toxicity and slightly acidic. Prolonged skin or eye contact may cause some irritation. 2

3 Ingestion: small quantities are unlikely to be harmful. Large quantities may give rise to gastro-intestinal disorders. Inhalation: low toxicity dust but may form unpleasant deposits in the nose and upper respiratory tract leading to sore throat and coughing. Generally regarded as a nuisance dust with no specific official Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL). Recommend a total inhalable dust standard for nuisance dust of 10 mg/m3 as an 8 hour Time Weighted Average. See HSE Guidance notes EH 40 and EH FIRST AID Product Skin contact : wash the effected area with soap and water. If irritation persists obtain medical advice. Eye contact : irrigate eyes with copious amounts of eyewash solution or water for at least 15 minutes. Obtain medical advice if symptoms persist. Ingestion : do not induce vomiting. Rinse mouth give water to drink. Obtain medical attention if more than small quantities have been swallowed. Inhalation : remove from source of exposure to dust. Keep warm and at rest. Obtain medical advice if symptoms persist. Fire and Thermal Decomposition Products Inhalation : at temperatures above 235 C Ammoniumsulfate can decompose in poisonous and corrosive gasses Ammonia and Sulphurdioxide. Remove persons from source of exposure to fumes. Keep warm and at rest. Persons who have inhaled decomposition gases (eg. in a fire) should seek medical advice and be kept under medical observation for at least 48 hours. 7. PRECAUTIONS FOR STORAGE, HANDLING & USE Do not weld or apply heat to equipment or plant, which may have contained the fertilizer without first washing thoroughly to remove all fertilizer. Storage : the basic requirements are the avoidance of involvement in a fire and contamination. Locate away from sources of heat, fire or explosion. Ensure high standard of house-keeping in the storage areas. Buildings used for storage 3

4 should be clean, dry and well ventilated, stacks herein should be at least 1 meter from walls, eaves and beams. Handling : avoid excessive generation of dust. Avoid unnecessary exposure to the atmosphere to prevent moisture pick up. Personnel protection : use approved dust respirators if airborne dust concentrations are liable to exceed recommended limits. Wear gloves, approved dust respirators and goggles when handling the products over long time periods. Use : use in accordance with manufacturers advice. Do not exceed maximum recommended rates of application. 8. TRANSPORT No special precautions. Can cause discoloration to aluminium parts. 9. SPILLAGE Clean up spillage promptly. Sweep up and place in a clean appropriately labeled container. Dispose of by use on farm, by spreading thinly on open ground or to an authorized waste facility. Take care to avoid the contamination of watercourses and drains. Inform the appropriate water authority in the event of accidental watercourse contamination. 10. FIRE FIGHTING When the fertilizer is not directly involved in the fire use the best means available to control the fire. When the fertilizer is involved: 1. Avoid breathing the fumes. Wherever possible wear an approved breathing mask and protective clothing when fighting a fire or when fumes are being emitted. 2. Call the fire brigade. 3. Use plenty of water. 4. Open doors and windows to give maximum ventilation. 5. Do not allow molten fertilizer to run into drains. If water containing the fertilizer enters any drain or watercourse, inform the appropriate water authorities immediately. Note also first aid precautions (6). 4

5 11. USER RESPONSIBILITY This safety data sheet provides health and safety information. The product is to be used in applications consistent with best farming practice. Individuals handling this product should be informed under COSHH of the recommended safety precautions and should have access to this information. The product information to this data sheet is to the best of Amfert s knowledge correct as at the date of publication. 6 GUIDELINES TO THE PRESERVATION OF QUALITY 1. Store NP / NPK fertilizers at a dry place. Prevent water from entering through non-waterproof floors, leaking roofs, open doors or hatches and by driving in wet vehicles. 2. During the storage period and as much as possible during loading and delivering the doors and ventilation openings should be kept closed to restrict the air circulation to a minimum. Check the sheds regularly on leaks and humidity, especially after storm and heavy rains etc. 3. Cover NP / NPK fertilizers up when the storage is expected to be longer than two weeks. Use transparent plastic foil with a thickness of 0,10 to 0,15 mm. Make sure there is an overlap of circa 0,5 meter. Cover again with new foil after shipping from a covered pile. 4. Keep the aisles and driving paths clean and clean spilled NP / NPK fertilizers immediately. 5. Mixture of certain fertilizers can cause reactions which can harmfully influence the quality. Avoid therefor during storage the mixture of NP / NPK fertilizers with other fertilizers. Also keep in mind products spilled from conveyer belt, oils and grease. 6. Keep the machinery clean. 7. Do not drive with mechanical shovels which are to full because of possible spilling and restrict driving over the product. 8. Loosen up any hardened product exclusively with mechanical tools. 9. Do not load or unload when it s raining. 10. Keep the administrational records up to date, especially about delivery time, dumping place and reloading time. 6
