5 Over ground NH 3 transportation costs are prohibitive In the US, consumers of NH 3 based fertilizers are mostly mid-continent i.e. the Corn Belt (88% of domestic NH 3 consumption is fertilizers) US NH 3 and other fertilizers are generally produced in the Gulf coast where the cheapest, most abundant gas is located Rail costs are escalating; insurance costs are sky-high US export market may soon be more attractive than over-ground sale to mid-continent users; while ocean freight for NH 3 tankers can add ~$50/tonne, it is still competitive in overseas market where NG is >$3/mmbtu.
